So this is a subject i've been wanting to bring up for a while. Mainly because some of this info is so obscure that it isn't even listed on Wikipedia. First up, is 1 title that is a bit more obvious about it's origins of being made by Tim Stamper, and a title commonly mistaken for being made by him. Dingo This game is specifically mentioned as being made by A.C.G. during attract mode. For those of you who don't know who that company is. That's Ashby Computers & Graphics, Limited. Which is an alternate name for Ultimate. (More specifically, Ashby was the original name the company was founded under. While Ultimate was used as a Trade Name.) This is the only commercially released game that mentions this company as the Dev. Rather than using the Ultimate name. If that isn't enough, it turns out that by loading up 6.7l in a hex editor and going to offset 00000360. You get some dev credits!
That's not the only interesting thing in that file either, at offset 00000870. There's this interesting message.
I have no idea if this is ever used, it could be an incredibly obscure easter egg that no one has found yet. But i can't check, as i have no experience in Disassembly. Finally, there's an interesting revision of this game that was dumped at some point. According to the title, the files are encrypted, and it's currently unplayable, so it's unknown if there's any differences. Gyruss Now we go into the game that's NOT made by him. Taken from Wikipedia. Originally posted by "Wikipedia" Helpfully, Wikipedia links to the report in question. Which is from Issue 22 of Commodore User magazine. Sure enough, it does mention Gyruss. Originally posted by "Commodore User" Now, there's one problem here. If you actually look at the game using a hex editor. (file gyrussk.1, at offset 00001e90) The staff list doesn't list Tim Stamper at all.
It appears that there was some sort of error that got left in print. Another thing worth noting is the "12 games" thing. Which mentions that companies like Konami and SEGA were publishing stuff made by Tim. I don't know if they're counting Dingo on that (Since it directly mentions ACG.) or not, and they unfortunately don't mention any other games aside from those two. So... Now, onto the rest of the games i've found that Tim Stamper has made. Specifically mentioning where in the files it's listed. Blue Print snd-1.3u > offset 00000200
It's worth noting that Tim Stamper has actually tweeted about this game, making it and Dingo the only titles he's specifically mentioned him working on. Enigma II (Note: While Tim Stamper isn't listed in this, other Ultimate employees like John Lathbury and Chris Stamper are. So i decided it still counts.) 1.5d > Randomly scattered through the file.
Saturn r4 > offset 00000000
So there you have it, i found 4 of the 12 (assuming the Commodore User article is correct, and counting Dingo as one of them.) Arcade games Tim Stamper worked on prior to opening Ultimate Play the Game. Keep in mind i only did a quick search for any games Zilec released prior to 1983. So it's highly likely i missed a good chunk of them listed as being published by someone other than them. ____________________ |
