Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they're planning on consolidating the current number of channels, but in less spectrum, which is why new bands will exist (700 Mhz if I recall) to be opened up.

I don't know why I put this here.
Yes. But in that band for TV, each 'channel' actually can have up to 4 subchannels. Quadrupling the total number, as often that includes various subthings a large network would broadcast.

Or, as many of them waste their space today, the same program in different screen resolutions. >.<

"In the United States by no later than February 17, 2009, all U.S. television broadcasts will be exclusively digital, by order of the Federal Communications Commission, with legislation setting this deadline signed into law in early 2006.[4] Furthermore, starting March 1, 2007, new television sets that receive signals over-the-air, including pocket sized portable televisions, must include digital tuners (for HD or SD broadcasts, or both).[5] Currently, most U.S. broadcasters are beaming their signals in both analog and digital formats; a few are digital-only. Citing the bandwidth efficiency of digital TV, after the analog switch-off the FCC will auction off channels 52–59 (the lower half of the 700 MHz band) for other communications traffic[6], completing the reallocation of broadcast channels 52–69 that began in the late 1990s. The analog switch-off ruling, which so far has met little opposition from consumers or manufacturers, would render all non-digital televisions dark and obsolete within 2 years. The FCC has determined that an external tuning device can simply be added to non-digital televisions to lengthen their useful lifespan. (However, as of March 2007, external tuning devices are not widely available, are relatively expensive, and require bulky AC power supplies.) Currently, even the earliest televisions continue to work with present broadcast standards. This mandate was designed to help provide a painless transition to the new standards. On September 12, 2007, the FCC voted 5-0 on requiring cable operators to make local broadcasts available to their users, even those with analog television. This requirement lasts until 2012, when the FCC will review the case again."

The only thing is that with over-the-air signals, you can still watch a weak signal, it'll just be really noisy. With digital, you get funkysquares garbling and freezing and stuff. (but at least the picture's great, if the signal's clear enough)

That's the main thing I worry about...what about those people that live out in the country, barely within the range of analog signals? Many of them are older people who watch TV mostly to keep up with the news (I knew a few myself). How will this affect them? Will they get an entirely unwatchable digital signal? One of my cousins had an HDTV with a good antenna a few years ago, and even though he lived entirely within city limits, he'd still get garbled lines, dropped frames, or even complete blackout if the signal got bad enough.

I fear the FCC is forgetting that not everyone in the US that watches TV lives in or near a large city...

A friend of mine lives in the hills...

He got Digital TV like two years ago, apparently it really helped watching TV here because the signal was stronger and clearer. :/

Also Kas: What is this mac-TV-device you speak of?

Yeah... Digital TV is no good in rural areas or otherwise where the signal is weak. Hopefully they'll allow TV broadcasters to use more powerful signals in those areas then. It'd suck to deprive hordes of people of their only contack with the outside world.
