The Guitar Hero games seem to be a fairly overlooked series on TCRF; however, I know that the games have a decent amount of unused content, mostly in the form of leftovers from earlier games. Just from Guitar Hero Metallica alone, I have found:

* Lots of leftovers from Guitar Hero World Tour's menus, including a large set of now-unused icons for the character editor and a graphic of an early version of the loading screen
* Guitar part textures for World Tour characters
* Guitar necks for characters going back to Guitar Hero III, including Slash, Lou, and the Rock God. The Rock God is notable because the version I was going through is the Wii version, where the Rock God has never been playable.
* Particle effects textures from Guitar Hero III from when characters use Star Power (at least I think they are, they folder they're in is called "gh3")
* An early version of one of a bass neck inlay
* Leftover product placement bass drum textures, including for Coca-Cola and House of Blues
* Textures from World Tour's product placements, including Amoeba Records and KFC
* Files for the European translation in the NTSC version, specifically Italian and German.
* A background that looks like paper and doesn't fit with the rest of the game's style, supposedly for a logo
* A small image that says "Woot!"
* Big and small versions of a rabbit that were supposedly made for Guitar Hero III
* A "template" stage, presumably for testing
* A "missing texture" texture (though I have seen it in-game via glitches, I haven't found it in the files yet)
* Audio tests (I couldn't open these)
* Potential duplicate stages, these might be able to be tested if someone can get an ISO with some renamed files but I'm not sure how to do it myself


This album has a sampler of what I've found, but it's by no means everything.

This seems like enough to warrant entry expansion; however, I cannot handle this by myself. Is anyone interested in helping make sure the things I talk about are actually unused? Furthermore, does Smash Hits have any of these leftovers? What about 5 and Warriors of Rock? Discuss.

I still have open-ended plans to do the same for the pre-GH3 games (there are two known prototypes of GH2 out there somewhere, and a third (which AFAIK was the E3 build) which has not been dumped. There's also some good GH1 proto footage out there, a bit in-fame and several GameSpot (I think) videos.

Closer to what you're studying, I know GH3 has a debug mode that can be hacked to work (GH2 has debug cheats, but they're driven by USB keyboard and I've only ever gotten it to power the keyboard, but not respond to it).

Decided to look into Guitar Hero III's Wii port to se if I could find anything interesting. I couldn't open any of the files in it, but I did manage to find a few things:

* Those particles effects in Metallica are taken straight from Guitar Hero III.
* This game too seems to have a test stage.
* None of the stages are called by their in-game names in the files, but rather, by their theme. Notably, the London theater stage is called "ArtDeco" and the Japan stage is called "Budokan" after the famous arena.
* The Grim Reaper and the God of Rock have no traces left, although I think the God of Rock might still have his guitar left in the game.
* Metalhead, one of the Wii exclusive characters, is just called "Robot", and the other, Leroy Budvis, is called both "Fawlvis" and "Felvis", probably meaning "fake Elvis" or "Faux Elvis". Lou is just called Satan.
* Most notably, Bret Michaels' model data still exists in the game despite the fact that he was dummied out of the Wii and PS2 versions. Someone should see if they can use file replacement to swap him and the default male singer's models in order to see if he still works. I did not see a skeleton or animations for him, but that's likely because he was the one who did all the mocap for the male singer.

As a correction, I accidentally included a used note highway texture in the Imgur link in the OP. I have removed it.

I attempted to do some file replacement to see if I could get Bret Michaels loaded into the game, here's what I found.

I attempted to replace the male singer's data with any Bret Michaels counterparts I could find, namely in the "models" and "pak/models" folders. Upon attempting to play a song with the male singer, Dolphin would throw up errors on every frame until the game itself crashed. No model was ever loaded for the singer, leaving an empty space on the stage. However, after choosing to play the song "Talk Dirty to Me", a song where Bret Michaels shows up on the PS3/360/PC version, the game was able to load it fine, but with one thing: it loaded the regular male singer model. It's possible that they simply replaced Bret's files with the male singer for whatever reason, but I doubt it since Bret's files are bigger than the male singer's. (As a side note, the songs with the female lead singer were unaffected, though this should be obvious.) Someone else with more expertise in the area should look into this and see if this is the case or not.

I think what is curbing a lot of discovery on these games is that the files, at least in the Wii version, are encrypted in the .ngc format. There have been some breakthrough with opening these, but not very much, and only with very specific files, such as img.ngc files and the .ngcs in the "pak" subfolders. Finding the content in these games depends on being able to break these open, although I'm not sure anyone cares to figure it out.

One game in the series I'm curious about is Guitar Hero Arcade, which, based on my experiences with it IRL, is actually a modified version of the PC version (the game, when the power is turned on, reveals itself to be run on Windows XP). Unfortunately, no images of the game (not pictures, like the game data itself) have shown up online, so breaking into these is nigh impossible unless someone tracks one down and dumps it.

Have you considered tearing into the PS2 version? It's very similar to the Wii version (as opposed to the 360/PS3/PC version which are all based off the 360 version).

If I had any free space on my PS2's HDD, I'd attempt some file replacement myself (but I don't, and fuck a bunch of loading GH games from USB).

I got into the files of the PS2, but for some reason the files are set up much more confusingly than on the Wii version. The one difference I've found between the two so far, however, is that the "video" folder on the PS2 version has a video called "DEFAULT.PSS" (which is blank) that the Wii version doesn't have, and the Wii version has a Vicarious Visions intro video that the PS2 lacks because they didn't work on the PS2 port. If I'm going to make any discoveries on the rest of the disc, I need to figure out what everything is first.

EDIT: Well I have found where all the juicy files are on the PS2 version... unfortunately, the only method I have heard of opening the archive that contains all of them involves a program that seems to be deleted from the Internet. :/ If anyone reading this has a copy of "HED Tools", let me know so I can take a crack at it.

Wow, fortuitous. I successfully got into the PS2 files, and I can confirm that Bret Michaels has leftover data, but I haven't tried any file replacement yet.

EDIT: When I looked into that DEFAULT.PSS video from before, only the audio was blank. When I played the video itself, it turns out it was actually a placeholder video! It turns out this isn't a new discovery, but it wasn't on the page so I added it. Click to watch

Additionally, I have found a few other things that seems suspicious, such as a folder for Wii venues, a file relating to the Xbox Live menu, what I think is a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 memory card icon, a leftover note highway image from the Grim Reaper (who didn't appear in the PS2 or Wii versions), and what may or may not be a bunch of test images that I'm currently trying to rip.

Did you play that PSS file in a normal media player? PSS files are MPEG-2 Program Streams, generally muxed with VAG audio (Sony XAPCM, I think it's called). There is a tool called PSS Plex that can demux these files, and VAG can be converted to WAV with MFAudio. The only PSS files I have found that didn't have regular VAG audio are the ones from the Rock band series, where the audio is actually VGS (which is basically multi-channel VAG, as used in GH1/2/80s).

Also - is that a Frets on Fire screenshot in the background? It's certainly not GH3, and it's not GH2 either.

Edit: Found these screenshots, one of which is the exact screenshot from the background of that PSS. Perhaps it is an earlier art style. The angle of the gem smashers really made me think of old-school FoF, though.

Probably easier to demux the .pss video with vgmtoolbox and use vgmstream to convert the .vag audio.

I ran the PSS through PSS Plex, the resulting WAV had a completely flat waveform. Also good find on those screenshots, those definitely need to be added to the page if I can rip them myself.

I was not even aware of VGMToolbox. It would be nice if it had remuxing support for PSS files using VGS audio, as the only tool I know of that can do so is Sony's own ps2str, which is clunky as all hell. I know there are plenty of tools to mux M2V with VAG.

Just extracted my copy of GH3, and extracted the HED/WAD. Inside of it, there is an images folder with several .img.ps2 files, as I'm sure you're aware by now. I don't have a proper converter (I understand the .img.ps2 files are in the same format used by the THPS series at the time, which I don't currently have time to investigate or search for any conversion tools). However, from loading the files into Tile Molester and manipulating the options until I get something identifiable, I have determined that images/gh3image1p.img.ps2 and images/gh3image2p.img.ps2 are the screens in question. There is also images/gh2image.img.ps2 which appears to be a direct screenshot of GH2 retail, oddly enough. images/internal_graphic_test.img.ps2 appears to be a screenshot from the 360 version (could be PS3 or PC as well, but I'm assuming 360 as that was the lead console during development).

As far as looking inside of the pak/pab/qb files found inside the WAD, you'll need QueenBee 1.9. There are also plenty of .pak files without corresponding .pab or .qb files, QB can open them but it's hard to make heads or tails of which file is which within the .pak. I haven't used any of these tools, but here are some THPS-related hacking tools that may come in handy when looking at these files.

Edit: On the second link, there is a file called gh3_tools.rar. Within it is a tool called gh3img.exe which appears to convert .img.ps2 files to .bmp. Unfortunately, on the two screenshots in question, it doesn't seem to get the palette right. They turn out like this (gh3image1p.img.ps2):



However, I ran it on internal_image_test.img.ps2, and look what I found...



Seems to be an early song results screen. I see something interesting there, though... "VIDEO REPLAY". Hmm...

Feel free to put that image on the wiki if you wish. I don't really care about "credit" or anything, the goal is getting the info out there, preserved and documented. I'd do it myself but I don't really have time...

I'm having trouble with gh3img.exe; whenever I open it, whether by double clicking on it or by dragging an img.ps2 file into it, it gives an Invalid argument error and closes straight away. Am I doing it wrong?

It's a command line tool. Syntax is:

gh3img <source> <dest>

Where <source> is the full filename of the .img.ps2 and <dest> is a .bmp filename of your choosing. One could probably bake up a .bat to allow drag-n-drop but I just use the CLI directly.

Thanks. I managed to find a few curiosities while looking around the graphics files, including a "missing texture" graphic. I also found a few leftovers from the God of Rock and Grim Ripper, who aren't in the PS2 version, in the form of character select portraits, highway inlays, and after-song magazine photos, and what I believe are elements of an unused ending where the player's guitarist flies off on a motorcycle (in the game, the band does this in a cutscene, but the guitarist is never seen in the cutscenes). The only two people to have these graphics are Axel Steel and Casey Lynch. I'm a bit hesitant to upload them since the converter seemed to screw them up a bit.

As a final weird thing, magazine photos change based on the character costume used. If a costume doesn't have a certain number of alternate colors, the magazine images for the invalid costume are filled in with Xavier Stone's default image.

I think that weird "streaking" on those textures is normal, I've seen that in a few GH1/2 textures as well.

Ehh, I'm not so sure. I think it has to do with the program not being able to correctly interpret the image transparency. For example, I've uploaded images to Twitter before that have had the same thing happen to them. Unless there's some way to get the images without them, they seem unfit to upload.

Right, as such images usually have an alpha channel as well. I meant that it was normal to have such pixel data in the image itself. I know that such images in GH2 have 7-bit alpha, which may or may not be necessary for the PS2's Graphics Synthesizer.

I know the .img.ps2 files are uncompressed, but I don't know the actual binary format.
