Hi, I am new here and I need someone to help me with putting this thread on the correct category please. I am so confused and I couldn't find a fitting place for my topic so I am going to name my thread exactly what I wanted to ask for.

I never used cheat engine before and I am using a mac and I know cheat engine only works for windows pc computers. I am looking for an expert with cheat engine because I am curious to find out if this article I was reading about pokemon snap is true or false. I used to love playing Pokemon Snap in the late 90's and I didn't know there could be more planned pokemon possibly cancelled and didn't make through the cut before the game was released!

Someone from Cutting room floor discovered some names of Pokemon popping on the screen when he was using cheat engine with pokemon snap. I am not sure if he is using emulator with this or the actual home console.

I would be happy if anyone could help me out here. I am really curious to know if these names are really in the game and I am going to find out what code it is that triggered this.

Thanks and best regards

Thanks for helping me with correcting the category of my very first post here on cutting room floor! I am looking for some experts on the cheat engine thing. There is a little mystery someone found in one of my favorite Nintendo 64 games and I was very curious and interested to find out if those names really did showed or at least lines of small text we could actually read in the game. I'll be happy to find proof if there is screenshots or a video showing the names but the only problem is what's the code used with cheat engine?

Someone named Passerby_Boy discovered an odd thing he found in Pokemon Snap after fooling around with changing codes using the cheat engine. According to the talk article, he found some unusual names from Pokemon never appeared in the game! I couldn't believe what I was reading and I had to bring this up about it here in the forums since nobody ever did a post anything about his discovery. I tried to find a way where I can contact this guy via email but cannot find his user name on the memberlist or his profile in cutting room floor for help finding out if this is true or fake.

Here are some clues for the missing Pokemon, Ekans was once seen in early screenshots and a video. His name was one of those names popped up on the screen according to Passerby_Boy. Also, some of the Pokemon like Pinsir, Mewtwo, and Cubone were signs you take pictures of but there could have been a time those Pokemon mentioned above had their names texted in the game's data when the three lost Pokemon might have been used before getting scrapped for signs!

As for Hypno, Abra, Golbat, and Alakazam. I am sure the case about the missing area called Fantastic Horror is true because of two songs exist thanks to the original composer for sharing these from his own site by the way and I believe psychic type Pokemon may have been planned for the horror level before getting cut for unknown reasons.

Beedrill might have been planned to appear somewhere in the beach level! I was guessing Scyther couldn't be the only Pokemon flying around those yellow flowers if Beedrill was there.

Pinsir, Cubone, and Mewtwo might have been planned to appear before until they got scrapped later for stupid Pokemon signs. I can only assume that maybe the Pokemon we saw in the signs years ago might have been planned very late in the game. Possibly the reason how did those two pokemon ended up as signs. However, Mewtwo seems like a weird idea that may sound out of place because we already got Mew and knowing the game Pokemon Snap is no doubt based on the anime series, it wouldn't make sense why a Mewtwo would live in the wild when he was originally created by Team Rocket and there is no Team Rocket anywhere to be seen in Pokemon Snap.

I think the River stage was planned to have more Pokemon with Ivysaur and Venusaur to appear on river stage while Blastoise and Wartortle would appear on mountain stage. Similar to the volcano stage having all three evolutions of Charmander when he was there in the game. Also, Gloom and Poliwrath for river stage while Rhyhorn and Cubone could be mountain stage Pokemon?

Also one more thing, where in the island has anything to do with horror? Could this fantastic horror stage be some kind of haunted forest or a haunted mansion? I think it would be awkward to have a mansion in the middle of the island only inhabited by Pokemon.

Let me know what you think of my theories! Thanks for reading.

Daggerfall's debug menu was found this way too. I think that HxD is more useful for finding strings within games than Cheat Engine. However, if you want to find a cheat in real-time, it's a fairly good way of doing it. Keep in mind that it isn't so easy to do this with emulated games, but it can be useful for finding particular values. The big problem is that Cheat Engine is designed somewhat more for x86 processors than anything else, so use caution as there can false results every now and then.

Thank you for your replies but I would really appreciate someone helping me with finding proof if this article is true or false. I cannot use cheat engine or any other kind of cheat device using emulators because I am using a mac, sorry!

I would appreciate if anyone can use it with pokemon snap and screenshots would be nice to see the actual pokemon names popped on the screen. That's all I am asking for from this topic, thank you for reading!

On a whim, I opened up the ROM in a hex editor, and it seems that there's some plain text stored at 0x9A3C10 to 0x9A6AE0. (Just did a text search for "pika")

Haven't looked through it in detail yet, but it looks like Oak's photo reactions... twice for some reason. The credits are also in plain text, and there are no other instances of "pika". Chances are that's where you'll find any unused names, if anything.

I really appreciate your help, thank you very much Peardian! Is it ok if we could discuss this in email or should I continue the topic here? I am really excited to find out something in the game that no one had ever confirmed or discovered yet! I only wished I had my old windows pc back just so I could find out for myself but I am not interested in hacking and I don't know anything about the cheat engine or even cared about using it.

I must apologize for those involved if they think it's just too much trouble to do for someone like me but I really wanted to find out what's in the game and see if there is any particular Pokemon hidden in the data we couldn't see in game! This includes 3d 64 model objects, sound effects, and textures unused!

There's stuff found now, so it's fine to continue discussing it here.

I took a look through it, and it seems the messages I found are only the special reaction messages, but not a list of all Pokemon. (For instance, no mention of Bulbasaur at all.) Interestingly, this means that special photo messages have the Pokemon's name directly as part of the message rather than using a variable like the common messages.

There are indeed some unused strings, with the most common/notable being "wrong number!" It shows up 15 times in the list, and also indicates that there is indeed some sort of number/index used to control what Pokemon is in the photo, and also seems to indicate that special photos (Balloon Pikachu) have their own number, too.

Here's one line that I'm not entirely sure about. Is this used at all? It's not grouped with the rest of the Pikachu lines.

Oh! That's PIKA!

I was actually working on compiling a list of all the poses and how to get them about a year or so ago and can confirm that that one is used. It's not a Special, but rather a Pose. You get it in a weirdly specific method of taking a picture of Pikachu when it's hatching Zapdos in the Tunnel (the Pose itself gives 1400 points if you're curious).

If someone has a method for quickly formatting the whole list for better readability I might be able to discern a pattern by comparing it to my list (though I'm not optimistic there is a pattern based on what you mentioned). However, if there is indeed a pattern then perhaps I'd be able to see if I missed any or if there are unused ones.

Thanks for your reply, amazing find there! You know what? I think the names may have a connection with some kind of variable (programming stuff) in the photo's string or in the gallery mode!

However, when you take a picture of a Pokemon, you would see a name right? I am not really a programmer myself, I do make games using game maker and multimedia fusion but those are just simple click and drop softwares. I do have a knowledge of what values and strings do for programming in games but this is still different because I know better that N64 games are not made with click and drop softwares LOL.

As for what you have found here, I think some of those phrases are some of Oak's speech never been used! They might have been used during the game's early development but for a reason they're removed before the game was out!

If those phrases really exist in the game. I would like to find out if those phrases of Oak's may have been recorded into an unused sound file? I remember someone on cutting room floor was looking around for unused voices of Oak but all of his finds were already in the game.

Simple explanation to why was this removed, maybe Oak got a phone call in the game and he had to say wrong number to an unexpected contact or prank call so the makers thought this scene is useless or stupid so they had to remove it. However, this could be an in-game joke for comic relief in the game but the phrase and the scene was removed for saving memory during development so that would make sense there.

Oh that's Pika! may have been used before when a special shot of Pikachu was sent to Oak during development but like the phone call phrase was removed as well!

Those two unused lines you found from the game are both entirely my best guess for what have happened to their removal.

Could you find any Pokemon names? Most of the text you found here are from Oak's dialog. I think the Pokemon names are located in another place and they are separate from Oak's text for sure. The names that pop up when you take pictures of a Pokemon.

Thanks for the amazing job on your search here. I've noticed a few unusual phrases that may sound out of place from what Oak said below. I haven't played Pokemon Snap for a long time so I forgot most of Oak's phrases. I am trying to look for are Pokemon names but I don't see below your list.

I am looking for Ekans and the number of that Pokemon is 023. You think you could try looking for him? This Pokemon was only seen in early screenshots but Ekans never appeared in the game. However, the name that popped up when you take a picture and possibly his model or textures might still be in the game's memory if Passerby_boy's article was true. I still want us to continue this search and see if we could actually find Ekans name!

I tried looking through the ROM for Pokemon names before, but they seem to be in a different format than everything else.

But what if the names are not written in text from the memory? What if the names are just textures and not like regular writing text? I hope you understand what I am trying to say here. The names don't look like text written at all and they could be just graphics like a sprite than normal text for reading and dialog.

I no longer have windows so I am not able to run any programs like these so if you have tile molester or any kind of sprite ripping software that would be great! However, if the names are not sprites we will have to try looking through the text thing like the other guy did when he found Oak's phrases and other stuff. I believe the only way you can find the names are in a particular place where the names show up. For example, when you take a picture of a pokemon the name shows but could that only name on screen be coded with other names inside the coding of that line of text as well? I was thinking if you are playing the game and snap a picture of one Pokemon, what would happen if you check the coding through the name that pops up? Maybe other names are inside the coding of the Pokemon name shown below the screen!

By the way, I would like to find out if fantastic horror exists too. I heard of an area in pokemon snap never exist in the game. However, anything from fantastic horror may still be somewhere in the game's data!

As I said before, I couldn't find the list of Pokemon names. The names are still most likely text rather than graphics because using graphics would be more complex and take up way more space than just writing the names. As GoldS said, they're probably stored in a different format.

Without knowing the game's formats, the only plausible way to get them right now is with Cheat Engine.

In a different format you say? Very strange. I guess that explains why the spriters resource and textures resource never did got any names of the pokemon other than game mode stuff from the menus and of course sprites of non pokemon like icons and professor oak himself.

I wonder where are the names stored in. I guess the names could be coded inside the characters after taking a picture for the name to appear or snapping a picture of the character triggered some kind of variable or string stored inside somewhere in a collection of names.

I find it very odd to believe how hard it is to find the names even after we already found a bunch of Oak's words and other in game text.

Good luck figuring it out with cheat engine though! However, you might want to try game shark or a better program for hacking in game data for the names.

Alright I picked through the list, and as it turns out there is a pattern throughout it, with nearly all of the poses grouped together by the Pokémon they belong to (which aren't sorted in any meaningful way).

There are a few poses that are clearly meant for specific Pokémon, but don't seem to actually be possible to obtain. There are also 9 extra "You've thrown a PESTER BALL." that I don't think belong to anyone. The other 8 belong to Electabuzz, Mankey, Sandshrew, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Vulpix and Meowth.

These are the poses that I could not find (every single other is accounted for), along with their nearest neighbors to give anyone that wants to search an idea of who it may belong to.

(please note that "It's very nice!", "Hmm... It's so-so." and "Hmm... It's not very good." are just universal poses that nearly everything in the game can get with a varying pose score, so they're not counted as poses by my standards)

"Oh! It's shining." Above is Growlithe. Could have been meant for Staryu or Starmie as they don't have poses.
"Oh! It's shining." Right below the above one, below is Victreebel. Could have been meant for Staryu or Starmie as they don't have poses.
...
"Oh! It's surprised!" Above is Electabuzz, below is Magnemite.
...
"I can barely see it." Above is Diglett, below is Dugtrio, very likely belongs to one of the two. Can't figure out how to get it, might be unused/scrapped, perhaps at one point taking a picture with them barely visible didn't give a "?" photo.
...
"Oh! It's falling." Above is Dratini, below is Graveler. Most likely meant for Geodude as this pose would be shared with Graveler, and Geodude doesn't actually have any other poses, maybe unused due to a mistake?
...
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Above is Mankey (who has this pose already), below is Magikarp. This is the third Pester Ball pose listed.
...
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Above is Poliwag. This is the fourth Pester Ball pose listed.
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Right below the above one, below is Sandshrew, who has this pose already. This is the fifth Pester Ball pose listed.
...
"It's about to go underground." In the middle of Sandshrew's, who this is definitely meant for as Sandslash has an identical pose, but Sandshrew's seems impossible to get without a cheating device as you can't get close enough for an acceptable picture before they finish burrowing, can't confirm myself.
...
"It stumbled." Above is Sandshrew.
"It stumbled." Right below the above one, below is Sandslash, who has this pose already. One of these two is likely meant for Sandshrew, might be unused, as knocking a Geodude down near it (like with Sandslash's) doesn't trigger it.
...
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Above is Goldeen. This is the seventh Pester Ball pose listed.
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Right below the above one, below is Squirtle, who has this pose already. This is the eighth Pester Ball pose listed.
...
"Hmm... It looks happy." Above is Squirtle, below is Porygon.
...
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Above is Psyduck. This is the tenth Pester Ball pose listed.
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Right below the above one, below is Bulbasaur, who has this pose already. This is the eleventh Pester Ball pose listed.
...
"Hmm..." In the middle of Charmander's, I have no idea what this could be.
...
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Above is Charmeleon. This is the fourteenth Pester Ball pose listed.
"You've thrown a PESTER BALL." Right below the above one, below is Vulpix, who has this pose already. This is the fifteenth Pester Ball pose listed.
...
"If only it were facing you..." Above is wrong number!/Pikachu.
"If only it were facing you..." Right below the above one, below is Mew.
...
"I can barely see it." Above is Diglett, below is Dugtrio, very likely belongs to one of the two (this is split from their other poses for some reason). Can't figure out how to get it, might be unused/scrapped, perhaps at one point taking a picture with them barely visible didn't give a "?" photo.

Also, it's worth noting that Metapod, Butterfree, Kakuna, Zubat, Weepinbell, Geodude, Magneton, Cloyster, Haunter, Staryu and Starmie all do not have a single pose, so any of the random outliers might have (at one point in time perhaps) belonged to them.

Yeah, I wasn't saying it was invalid, just chuckling because it is indeed not the best way. The newer the system, the more appropriate it is, especially with limited debugging functionality. To me personally, it'd be more of a "last resort" method.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
