The demo version found on Jampack Winter 2002 has an early, yet inaccessible version of the tutorial level. Now, thanks to a friend of mine, it is now able to be played via a save state. Here is a video of it (it has a fair amount of differences; The biggest being an EARLY version of Carmelita Fox):

Wow, this is a really neat find! Before this, the only image we had of that beta Carmelita was a grainy little screenshot. It's interesting how far into development her old design got. She's really out of place looking, though; much more cartoony looking than Sly (namely her eyes and how many of her features have black outlines) Her voice is either a stand-in or just... terrible. The final game's lines were read with so much more gusto. This actress sounds bored!

Also interesting to note, Murray's voice clip in this video is completely different than the final! (as were most of Bentleys but they were just re-recorded) I recognize the clip from a behind-the-scenes video, where the voice actor said that Murray was to be flamboyantly gay. I was under the impression that that idea was scrapped long ago, but now I know that's not true because this demo is from when the game was about 99% done.

Has anyone tried ripping into that disc? Clearly Carmelita's beta model is in there, I wonder what other cool things could be found.

From what I've gathered, you're right. The game was really close to completion. Heck, I know at the point the E3 demo was made, they already had the Muggshot level mostly done. Even Carmelita was in the story at that point as well, but she had a black police outfit and was more orange. There is a chance that even Mz. Ruby's level was done at the time the E3 demo was made, since in a video I saw (it was by SlyCooperRawks I think), there were some placeholder sounds for Mz. Ruby's rhythm mini game, and they sound a lot like the E3 demo Sly's voice, and I mean, a lot. So, my best guess is they had the Mz. Ruby level completed, and then Sucker Punch went and changed up the model and voice. The other thing is the plot was most likely all thought out, since the game, at the time, was called "Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus". Just like the final game.

Yeah, I've played one of the demos in that guy's videos, and it was seriously 99% done. Other than a few changes, missing noises, different voices, etc, the game was very much finished at that point; I'm pretty sure that demo was released just months before the final game. In much older beta footage, Sly's name is TJ and his voice and model are very, very different. I don't believe any playable demos exist prior to the 99% done one.

We really should add some of this stuff to the article, I think it only has some info about the demo's first level. SlyCooperRawks on youtube has some great demo footage, one even talking about how Raleigh's, the final game's first hub, was supposed to be after Panda King's, which is the final game's like... fourth hub.

Actually, from the looks of it, JT's in-game model (not the one used in the conversations) is the same as the E3 demo Sly. And, that's considering the JT build was made just 10 months before release. I say he looks like the E3 Sly because if you freeze frame the video, it will show his face, and it looks the same as the E3 Sly. Also, to support this, the animations appear to be the same. It's as if the engine's mechanics were pretty much implemented at the point JT's build was made, since even the level layout is the same (albeit different textures).

Here is a picture of JT's face. You can tell it's the old, E3 demo Sly model for sure.

Hmm I think you're right! In the video below, there's some rather old footage of Bentley calling him JT, and his model is the same as the one in the demo. Both voice actors are different from the final and the demo, even Bentleys! However Bentley's model is actually exactly the same as the final game, while this floating Sly... sorry, TJ head is different even from the demo. He still refers to his climb move as "new" so at this point Raleigh's wasn't the first area either. The text at the beginning of the clip says this was from 10 months before the final.

I never did think of the fact that he refers to the climb move as "new". Sorta makes you wonder how many levels are actually in the JT build. And in regards to the video you showed, I actually removed all of the commentary (the conversations between JT and Bentley were removed, too, sadly) but you can hear the music in the background a bit better. It is very different, but it's a similar style to that of the final. Oh, and the one I did with no commentary, the quality is outstanding compared to the one you had posted.

I found a video on IGN's YouTube channel. It is of a glitchy build of Sly 1, where the first line from Carmelita is STILL the old one, but the rest is normal, and her model is final. The animations for Carmelita are a bit screwed up when she jumps, and the black, widescreen borders for the conversation between Sly and her is completely absent.

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwm9RaSZSh0

Here is another cool thing to add; Gunboat Graveyard is shown in a video, with the same music shown in the tutorial level. This is obvious now that it's a placeholder until the music is made for the level.

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8urXtyoJ-g

Looking a bit more shows a more interesting thing; There is a clip of the old Raleigh boss fight. It plays the same, but the boss counter is different, and Raleigh is much more pale than his final model.

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPS7hY8hNjI

EDIT: This is off topic a bit, but I realized the graphics style that JT's build used, is very similar to Rocket Robot on Wheels, also by Sucker Punch. That, and JT looks a lot like Jojo from said game.
