Pfheh, get a digital tuner and hook it up to your old antenna and you're just fine over here. Better than fine, even, as I hear one gets less compression on over-the-air digital stuff here.

As for my radio, well, technically my boombox was all but dead anyway (useless tape player, dead CD player, only a working radio) I can probably replace it with a better device.

Although it'll make me sad for my ancient receiver, which will become useless... heck, the marine radio too.

We have satellite TV here so it should be fine, although the TV itself is from 1998 (I think), before the whole widescreen HD LCD hype took over ... not like I watch TV anyway, either

Guys, I think this is only affecting television broadcasts. Radio and such should still be fine.

I did some wiki-research on the current applications of various signals in various portions of the RF spectrum, and here is a list of common public uses that I've come up with:

- Time Signals (40 kHz-80 kHz): Some electronic clocks use this to automatically set the correct time. My wristwatch does this, actually.

- Medium-Wave AM Radio (520 kHz–1610 kHz): This is the most common range for public AM Radio broadcasting, in America.

- FM radio (88 MHz-108 MHz): Again, this is the range used in America. Also known as Band II.

- VHF television broadcasts (55 MHz-88 MHz, and 175 MHz-216 MHz): This is channels 2-6 (Band I), and 7-13 (Band III), respectively.

- UHF television broadcasts (470 MHz-806 MHz): This is channels 14-69. Interesting to note, 806 MHz-894 MHz used to be used for channels 70-83, but are now used for pagers, cell phones, and radio transmissions for local safety services like police, fire, and hospitals.

- Satellite Radio (2310 MHz–2360 MHz): Both XM and Sirius.

Now, in addition to this list, I took a look at the part of the bill you're all concerned with.

Basically, stations that broadcast in the "analog television service" will be required to stop by Feb. 18, 2009.

All broadcasting (analog and digital) will switch to a digital signal, being broadcasted on channels 2-36, or channels 38-51.

Now, from what I can gather from this, there will still be television broadcasts over the air, but they will be in a digital signal, and not an analog signal. They're just basically trying to free up some of the RF spectrum, which will be auctioned off.

This does *not* mention FM/AM radio signals anywhere, so I imagine that they'll be safe. For now.

Actually, neo, they sell HD rabbit ears and rooftop antennae. Have for over two years now. Old-style UHF/VHF ones, though, yea.
Yeah, it is said that such antennae will pick up digital signals after the conversion, but the TV won't be able to process the digital signal. Thus, you should pay attention if that is how you pick up TV right now. I just want to point out that if you pay for cable or satellite TV, there is no need to upgrade your TV or worry about buying a digital-to-analog converter.

I remember in high school, many of my classmates didn't know the difference between cable/satellite and over the air TV.

Yeah. This really only affects analog over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna, and possibly services like analog cable (if it still even exists). All devices which output their own signals like DVD players, VCRs, game consoles, etc do not apply.

I saw the commercial for this the other day. Freaking insane...I currently have comcast cable without a nice looking TV...but hopefully that'll change before 2009.

Hah. So my suspicions were correct...even after the whole thing for the movement they're still trying to make a mint off this. As far as I knew, they wanted to nuke analog broadcasts entirely when I worked at RS...so the chances are good that any and all will be nuked. I mean we pushed everything digital because of it...from TVs to cordless phones that used a digital and not analog signal.

Though, that makes sense if they don't do EVERYTHING in the spectrum too, taking cordless phones (not cells) into account. That'd be kinda hard for them to nuke cordless analog signals. You probably wouldn't want to use one anyways, especially in the 900MHz range, since you can pick up the conversation on a regular scanner if you so wanted to.

Cellphones, for instance, are another medium getting hit. Nextel especially since they had to drop their analog network that was actually quite good to begin with. Not to mention the possibility of a slight quality drop from uncompressed analog to compressed/encoded digital. :\

Hm, I remember hearing about the cell-phone thing, though I thought most companies, especially AT&T and Verizon, wanted to get rid of the analog networks themselves as well- the big opposition coming from people like OnStar who depended on the analog networks. I'm not surprised that Nextel seems to get screwed over- though from what I've heard Sprint is planning on getting rid of Nextel altogether in the long term.

It seems to me that mobile phones are going to eventually replace landlines too... What difference that'll make, I have not the least bit of clue. Except perhaps auto accidents due to even more idiots talking instead of focusing on the road.

Sprint is merged with Nextel, last I heard (Sprint-Nextel). The analog networks for Nextel were ditched not too long ago, if I'm not mistaken so you're likely right there.

The UK's had a dual system working for a while. The digital signal can be picked up and processed by pretty much any TV sold today. The switch-over has already begun, the analog system is being switched off slowly region-by-region.

I don't really see what all the fuss is about. Radio is fine, mobile phones are fine, my cordless phone is fine, my wireless network is fine, as is everything else that uses wireless communications. All that's happening is that the television space is being shifted around a bit. Digital technology also means that more channels can be broadcast in the traditional bandwidth it occupied.

I've got an HDTV that can process both analog and digital, and I've got a USB-key-sized receiver that will allow my Mac to receive, display and record digital TV, so I don't even need a TV watch digital TV

I don't really have much of a problem with it either. I don't really have a need for TV most times anyways since I have access to this. To say the least, I have neither cable nor satellite at home (and won't until I decide otherwise/get a big screen and furniture to care enough).

There are actually more broadcast channels in digital, and more content, than before.

Over-the-air TV is actually going to become good enough to compete with Cable at this rate, with the lower amount of compression and the lack of distortion (You either get a channel or you don't)
