It's to allow the government to make tons of money selling off analog TV signals to cell-phone companies (and maybe Google), from what I can tell

Which means the end for my tiny $5 black and white TV in my room, as it doesn't even have anywhere to plug in a set-top box

I knew about it a long time ago, moreso because we put the ads up in RadioShack next the TV more than a year ago. It's not just TV, but all analog transmissions period. Makes me wonder if that analog is going to get sold or something like that by the government.

I would assume EBs would still be fine over weather radio, at least. You can use a TV no prob after mid-Feb 2009 (because a lot of people said you'd just get a black screen, dumbly) it's just you can't pick up digital transmissions without the convertor or a digital tuner/TV. They enacted all broadcasts to be digital by this year, if I'm not mistaken. The only reason people that have analog are fine still is because they're still broadcasting in their -00 channel.

Are they abolishing the AM and FM analog radio spectrum as well, then? That's odd- I would think there'd be more coverage about that, since non-broadcast radio is still rather rare comparatively.

Why do you think they've talked about HD Radio for so long with multiple channels? Already there are state police that have switched to digital trunk scanners for their transmissions (which, a semi-decent one costs 500 dollars). It's all digital mid-Feb '09 as far as I know.

AM HD Radio supposedly will sound close to FM radio as it is now, btw.

I heard about this months ago. At first I thought it was a joke then I saw that it was true.

However, if they do raise the price on a converter, expect there to be people who can't afford one to wake-up one day and find there's no television. Communication on that level would come to a halt, thus adding to the hype. The price on new digital televisions would probably rise as well. That intern would cause the demand/price of a converter to go even higher as well.(although, plain radio might be the alternative for people who can't buy one.)

Not necessarily HDTV more than digital (which HD is obviously digital). You can still buy low-def TVs that have digital tuners.

Cellphones, for instance, are another medium getting hit. Nextel especially since they had to drop their analog network that was actually quite good to begin with. Not to mention the possibility of a slight quality drop from uncompressed analog to compressed/encoded digital. :\

I believe that it is one of the stupidest ideas ever, but it does make sense to allow emergency communication to be the only things to use radio waves.

I understand that they need the emergency communication to change all the TVs to allow digital TV programming, but seeing as there are people with no money or who can't buy one, I think that it is not necessary to cause someone to waste money so that they may be able to enjoy quality TV programming without having to pay cable companies.

Of course, how would they be able to tell if someone is not using one of those digital-to-analog converter boxes? Maybe if they hear the communication becoming sloppy, but still, people want to have the ability to watch TV without having a long cable connected to a TV. Most of the time, emergency communication isn't happening anywhere near them.

Having all TVs change to digital programming will help people whose lives are in danger, but I'm against having to change the way my TV gets signal, even if it doesn't apply to me.

Actually, neo, they sell HD rabbit ears and rooftop antennae. Have for over two years now. Old-style UHF/VHF ones, though, yea.

As far as having a digital television, my family just bought a new HD T.V.(which I never watch By-the-way) So were're covered as far as geting a digital signal. The television also uses an anolog rabbit-ear antenna to catch its signals.
