| @puddingpops: Good luck with that endeavor. @BMF: I'm far from upset, but I respect your position, so I will stop. I've edited this post. I wonder that as well? I'm not sure, but that sounds plausible. I don't really deal with image files, but I'll try messing about with the level loader, and see if anything dumps in memory for the Iron areas that don't fully load, or just crashes. |

I wasn't aware this was exactly escalating to any levels that needed chilling ![]() Yes, I'd love to see those graphics with their correct colors. Who knows, maybe other unused graphics are in there somewhere? I tried opening all the different file extension types on the disc and couldn't find anything that had graphics, so I'm still wondering how those graphics were found to begin with. |

| Nice one! I wonder if there's any way to get the palette information somewhere so we can see these the way they were meant to be seen. I tried this with the JP demo disc and it looks like some items look different from the final. Too hard to make stuff out properly though with all the colors being messed up. |

| I'm still working on the list of icons and which are used/unused, I've just been really busy with work as of late. Can someone clone me so I can get all this stuff done. |

| Just finished a playthrough of the Japanese version of Tomba 1, which I did purely because I was interested if there were any in-game differences from the UK/US versions of the game. As I don't speak any Japanese and wanted do a 100% run, my solution was to run a youtube video of someone doing a 100% run of the English version, then simply copy it step by step as I played the Japanese version, therefore side-stepping the need to read/understand the Japanese text. Sadly I didn't notice many differences, and the differences I did notice were pretty uninteresting. But other than this thread I couldn't find any real information online regarding differences between the Japanese version and the English versions so I thought I'd post the information here anyway. The only differences I noticed were: -When you jump on a koma pig enemy, there is a fart sound effect in the Japanese version. Which is not present in the English versions. To me, the animation makes much more sense with the sound effect as it shows like a cloud of gas coming from the pig when you jump on him. Very odd that they took the sound effect out of the English versions. -The textures of the haunted mansion in the Japanese version are much simpler and lack the detail of the English versions -The sky is a different color at the Y-crossing area. In the Japanese version it's black, in the English versions it's blue and white. -The 10,000 year old man's crystal ball thing has a different texture -The background of Trick Village is missing the trees -Most menu graphics are different, as is the loading screen. -Finally some of the FMVs have different music and possibly a few other differences, not sure. Pretty sure those were the only differences. All dull, I know, but at least the in-game differences are now documented somewhere online. Obviously my comparison is just looking at the in-game experience and does not dig deep into the disc data. Obviously there are differences there in terms of unused content already posted in this thread. I guess it's possible there still could be additional events or items in the Japanese version that you can somehow trigger in-game if you could understand all the text, but I did not encounter any of them while following the 100% walkthrough of the English version step by step. |

Originally posted by theassassin As far as I know, no events were added/removed between jp and en. There's one change I do know of though, if you manage to start the event "Seven Friends" without getting baron in JP, the game doesn't give you him. Oddly this is changed in NA/PAL where the one million year old man does give you baron, but this locks you out of all the events related to him. (You'll miss the one for bringing him back to town, giving him herbs, giving him knowledge fruit, giving him seaweed, and getting him from the dwarf lady). I think anyway, it's been a while since I've done an any% run of the game. Not beta related, but one bug that prevents you from getting 100% made it through from JP to NA, if you stand on top of the thief in the chimney when you go to deliver "What the thief forgot", you'll fall in after the cutscene starts and miss out on completing the event and getting 2 cheeses, and also lock yourself out of getting the boss jewel. I'm curious if JP has the weird trigger for getting the golden flower seed, where you have to complete death fruit juice first before you can get it in watch tower. I should probably go through the item icons and figure out which ones aren't used, same with events. I should have a 100% file before final pig somewhere. |

Originally posted by Zerovii Weird. I'd already got Baron as I was following the 100% run as I said. By the way here's a link to the run I copied - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgaIpl6TTtw Also once I'd completed everything on the JP version apart from the last evil pig, I compared all pages of the events screen and items screen to the English version and couldn't notice any differences. As I said though, my comparison only relates to the in-game experience. I believe there are indeed unused events and unused items buried in the game data of the Japanese version. And of course the unused FMV and parts of the deleted Iron area as already mentioned in this thread. Oh yeh and has anyone done any digging in the Japanese DEMO version of the game? I saw one sell on ebay recently, fairly cheap. Wasn't sure if the disc was dumped/available or not. |

| No idea. It was described as a "trial version" by the seller, but that could be just his word for demo so doesn't really mean anything regarding when it was released. Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/311011857788 And here's three photos from the description: http://210.154.86.212/img/98736133a.jpg http://210.154.86.213/img/98736133b.jpg http://210.154.86.212/img/98736133c.jpg I don't buy games anymore and don't frequent the emulation scene either so I have no idea how rare this is or whether it is dumped/available anywhere. I kinda hope it is as would be interesting to have someone dig around in the data for differences or unused content. Kinda wish I'd posted the link here before it ended incase it isn't dumped... |

Originally posted by spinnyjoy I think that might be hidden village? Im gonna check my file- ...That's really weird, I'm not sure what it is. In the US no text comes up for highlighting it and it isn't part of the jungle either, yet it seems like I visited it. Strange find indeed, with how many parts seem scrapped that revolve around Village of Civilization and funga, maybe it's part of a scrapped funga town? Definitely not hidden village, its text shows up in phoenix mountain like it should SECOND EDIT:The dwarf text thing might be explainable, but I don't have full knowledge of japanese so excuse me if I'm incorrect on this. If I recall right, japan uses odd symbols to represent gibberish/unimportant text. So for the US it got changed into the dwarf gibberish we know it as now. I think anyway but glitterberri would have to verify that/tell me how wrong I am on things I barely remember. Originally posted by theassassin I didn't watch it, but you would have to completely ignore baron until you have to collect the friends to open the last pig. I was told by one of the (2) other speedrunners for the game that jp any% would be slower due to 1mil old man not giving you baron after ignoring him all game. It's actually an odd change too, because at that point the game is really opened up to you too so collecting everything would be easy anyway :\ Originally posted by spinnyjoy's dropbox wait what that's hilarious and might make jp faster for any% after all, I gotta look into that! EDIT:Holy cow jp tomba sounds completely unfinished from that. Although all the changes sound solid. I can confirm that the laughing/crying uncontrollably mechanic is...more frustrating? in the JP version for sure. |

Interesting findings. I hacked the Toys R' Us and Taikenban demos (just health IIRC). I also found some old codes that I thought I'd lost. I'll share those ASAP. For now, here is some build info for the game:

| Japanese TRIAL version now on ebay, if anyone has the desire to explore it: item number 131441555200 Pretty cheap as well. This may be an earlier version of the game than has been seen before, although I guess being a trial version it will most likely only contain the first couple of areas. |

| The Ore! Tomba demo (SLPM-80165), from a bit of googling, appears to have been given out at the PlayStation Club Festival '97 -'98 (プレイステーション・クラブ・フェスティバル'97-'98). ____________________ Sometimes I English very well but sometimes no. |
