I’ve been really getting into solid wallpapers lately myself. I’m starting to believe that wallpapers are actually pretty overrated. #AntiWallpaperUIMovement

I’ve taken a sort of staunchly but only playfully so reactionary response to computer UIs, questioning what is it that we exactly find necessary in our computer experience. Like, do we really need 24-bit color on our icons? How do gradients and “pretty buttons” affect our computer experience? What about font antialiasing?

I find myself really enjoying the 16-color icons I’ve been using lately, way over the glossier, shinier icons people seem to prefer these days. I can cite a number of reasons for that. Like, icons—as designer Susan Kare¹ said herself—are purely symbolic representations of concepts in a similar manner as traffic signs, so a detailed “representation” feels excessive². But I think I also really just enjoy that retro aesthetic.

Font antialiasing is something I reallly want to give up though because I like how it looks but I think it’s just not practical with the pixel density I have right now and the fact that I’m using a LCD. Oh well.

Grr, I can’t believe I let you guys see me nerd out like this.

Yep. I remember other articles on how did the interface go from simplistic to incredibly RAM hog. The "development" of the icons over the time was also shown, citing the Apple Machintosh icons.

Now, on a somewhat related note on the 256 color mode (which makes icon use their 16 color "version" for some reason).

Interestingly, there are still 16 color icons in the preinstalled Windows 7 / 8 applications, but they look just plain bad.
Note Windows Vista/7/8 also fails to use the 256 color palette correctly when using the Print Screen button, so the desktop color looks kind of weird.

Contrast to XP, that while most of the 16 color icons were left over from Win2K, the "new" ones usually looked good.



There were deleted some time in Vista development, to be replaced by crap ones, because nobody cares about the 256 color mode, right?

I don't think switching your color settings only to get low-color icons is a good idea. Have you tried using patches?

A Windows 2000 style patcher for WinXP.
A Windows 95 style patcher for WinXP.

Or you can just run a script that automatically deletes every icon with a color depth higher than 8-bit.
And then you disable the Themes service.

Nah, it was done just for fun. I'd have problems if I wanted to work with that color depth.

Also, although I'll be switching back to they grey theme, just look what awesome theme I've found.

I upgraded, slightly, trading the teal for the business-like blues of Windows ME. I ditched the Redmond gtk2 theme for a modified Candido-Luna. Lucida Grande fell in favor of Tahoma as an ode to XP-era Windows branding. When in Redmond, do as Redmonders do, I guess. I kept the classic icons, though, and I even made a PKGBUILD for it if you by any chance want a copy of it yourself.

I moved the taskbar to the right side after noting that my workflow is left to right, so I was visually re-parsing the taskbar each time my eyes swept across the screen before. Now I only see it when I need to.

My Linux install is kind of an art project.

The level of "Why?" of me using the Windows 8 aero.theme has overflown and to prevent myself going insane I've switched to a more sane theme.

I hope now I can have a "stable" desktop theme all along. It's starting to get wierd to switch from a theme to another.

Oh well I always liked the XP Royal theme a lot. The only thing which will go away at some point is the desktop wallpaper. Oh, and I'll constantly switch between the Aero and Non-Aero version. :/

I spent a little more time tweaking my desktop until I arrived at this. Although at a glance it might look pretty similar to before, I made a number of small changes to make my desktop say what I want it to say.

Once again, I excised anti-aliasing, without which Tahoma actually looks really good. I’m using the Infinality freetype patches which creates a number of sane defaults, some of which are modeled after other operating systems. I’m using the “Infinality” setting here. At the same time, the renderer anti-aliases fonts in Chrome which somehow makes the experience less distracting for me¹.

I also attached a customized, tiling version of the Mac OS 9 background and switched all my monospace fonts to Monaco 9 to create a vaguely-late-90s user-experience with an intentional postmodern identity crisis. My terminal, while sporting Monaco, enforces this through its classic Windows terminal color scheme.

What I really want is people to look at my computer and be like, “What the fuck are you running?”



For IRC, I used to use Verdana, a font that served me well but with cleaner bitmap glyphs, I opted for Times New Roman to recreate the feel of late 90s web comics made in MS Paint without resorting to (a “surprisingly” agreeable but ultimately ill-suited) Comic Sans².

In a world of increasingly seamless interfaces, where are the interfaces that function yet remind us that we’re looking at a box of silicone and plastic? When will UI design have enough interactive tropes that people can create deconstructive self-aware UIs?

I think I’ve reached a relatively stable point³, but I am looking to switch the wallpaper for a Mac OS 8 one if I can find it. If anyone has it handy, I’d greatly appreciate it. Also, I want Linux-compatible versions of Mac OS 8/9 cursors.

¹ A huge problem I had with anti-aliasing off before was the fonts looked really really bad in webpages. This is because not every font has bitmap outlines. To fix this, I made sure to use exclusively fonts from the era I was replicating.
² Trebuchet MS was another candidate but its irregular glyphs eventually became too distracting. Speaking of which, this is one font you hardly ever see anymore. Thank goodness.
³ The Windows 95-inspired one seemed to last almost over two weeks somehow.

It's time to go back to the notebook where... the theme is still the same. Nothing changed - still the same theme (which was based on the theme Xkeeper used in some of his videos, except instead of violet dialog box color there's a dark gray :/). I never use any other non-classic theme because too much I'm in fear of wasting RAM and CPU, especially on this already slow notebook. That's also why I tipically usually have only 1-2 programs open, one usually Firefox.

Uh, I still have "that dark" theme.

I sold my Dell Inspiron 13z-5323 and got an old HP Compaq NC4400 which I've been slowly restoring. It’s decked out with 4GB of RAM from my Macbook plus a 750GB WD Black hard drive. Pretty freaking sweet! I did this because I got tired of widescreen and wanted something that wasn't widescreen but still compact and light. This laptop is only 12.1” in diagonal and it’s got an XGA screen, which has actually been a very comfortable transition. What sold me, though, was the keyboard being typefaced in FUTURA BOLD, a welcome (but probably unintentional) nod to the aesthetics of Wes Anderson. I am in the process of further restoring it right now with a new battery, palm rest, touchpad and keyboard on their way.

The original intent was for this to run Windows 7 or 8 but they kept bluescreening whenever I tried to update them—go figure—so they run Linux for now. I’ve heard about someone fitting a SXGA LCD panel onto their NC4400, which is something I am currently exploring. We’ll see.

The XGA screen resolution makes a vertical taskbar impractical because web content is fitted for 1024 pixel displays, so it’s moved back to the bottom. I also dropped the silly Mac wallpaper and goofy Times IRC font to show that this install is "more serious".
