I can't find any info about a FF4 sample version online, which makes me think it's probably just the 1.0 version, especially given the finalized retail packaging. 1.0's pretty uncommon, but it's probably not worth bidding on.

From what I see, the F-Zero prototype looks to be the most interesting of the bunch along with the Castlevania protos. As usual, I can't tell if they are legit or if the seller merely ripped off the old sticker and relabeled it prototype. I guess it ultimately doesn't matter since I can't buy them anyway but it would be nice to know.

Oh wow. I'd never expect to see an auction with 100 prototypes. A few of these appear to be final versions (Definitely know the Tetris and Dr. Mario and Illusion of Gaia NTSC carts are). I think this also applies to Super Pinball, but the image showing all the carts is too blurry to tell. 11 of those SNES prototypes are labelled as final versions, so I don't think they'd be too interesting.

Also, almost 2/5ths are Populous SNES carts, which is worrying and not too interesting to say the least (no doubt there would many copies of the same prototype or possibly the final version). Here's what I would ask: How did he get so many Populous carts and why? Was the original owner of these carts a huge Populous fan or did he just get those from a warehouse?

So really, there only appears to be 50 potentially worthwhile prototypes.

I think the Super Mario 64 Sample is just the final Japanese version.

The only website with the code on the back of cart I could find via google was this:

I've never played the series, but apparently to commemorate kickstarting a new game, developers behind the game Flatout have released an early prototype for free. I dunno where this places it in a development timeframe--is it considered an early version of Flatout, or a proof-of-concept only--but I thought I'd share in case it piques an interest.

Interesting that someone was able to (temporarily) get ahold of prototype of the game so quickly considering the game is only 2 years old.

While we can only dump 3DS games, there's currently no way to disassemble them or make them work.

Every emulator out there NOT on flashcarts gives you malware. I haven't tried to see what it is, but by experience it may be a malicious AutoIt script.

There are no public 3DS emulators (there would be Nintendo's ones for developers obviously - but these are not leaked). All screencasts of '3DS Emulators' are clearly faked, just scams and viruses.

There do appear to be flashcarts that work with ROMS, but I am not sure if they work on new versions of the 3DS firmware. The only homebrew seems to be flashcart software.

Flash carts don't emulate 3DS games on 3DS systems - that would be pointless (and extremely slow, if not impossible). Nor are there homebrew emulators for the 3DS (DS games run natively on the 3DS, under a special mode).

So, we'll be waiting quite a bit of time to see a real emulator, but even if someone manages to make a working one, how could all the problems be fixed. Even the DS emulation is not inaccurate.

I'll be surprised if somebody could pull that off.

When I said tools, I didn't even mean emulators. Just tools to crack open the ROM image and poke around the files (like Tinke for the DS). Since we can't even do that, I feel that it will be a very long time until any type of emulator for the 3DS is released.

Speaking for myself, I could care less if such a 3DS emulator works well anyway. I would just want something good enough so I can poke around the game for content (which is still a tall order to ask for at this point). For example, look at DeSmuME. It honestly isn't that great of an emulator but it is good enough to poke around a game with. If I really wanted to play a game for real, I would buy it for my 3DS. I'd rather play on that than my laptop.

You can't use IDA on 3DS games because, you know, they're encrypted. Which is kinda the root of the whole problem.

I'm pretty sure the consensus is that, to be able to understand the 3DS hardware and software to be able to modify it fully and even start making emulators, and to look inside games - some kind of key is needed. A suspicious (although it may be genuine) fundraiser by the 3dbrew wiki for decapping a chip in the 3DS was set up.
