Hello everyone,

I want to expand on the Super Mario Sunshine (Prototype) page because it was released in multiple regions, which as a result, have multiple differences between each one. I saw that there was no discussion page on the wiki for the prototype, so I referred to here for assistance. I currently have both the North American and Japanese versions, and was hoping to state the differences between each prototype, in which one of them is easily shown within the promotion videos on the discs. I am, however, having difficulties accessing or converting the tgc files (which contain the various videos and demos) using tgctogcm.exe, and do not know of any other tools used in order to access the archives. I have tried accessing them in both versions that I have, with no successful result. Would anyone have any ideas as to how to approach these issues?

Peardian made a thread below regarding the demo, but I did not want to gravedig, I hope everyone understands.

I don't have any helpful advice, but don't be afraid to bump (gravedig?) an old thread if you have something new to contribute, or an important question. I'd rather an old topic get bumped than have multiple topics covering the same game.

Yes, it refers to digging a dead thread back up, but I guess here at TCRF it does not apply due to finding old content all the time.

To provide some background on the tool, Tgctogcm.exe was used to extract the various games from The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition (or whatever it is called), due to it having over four games total, it was all separately packaged in four tgc files. In the demo discs, the same thing likely applies due to the structure of the menu and of course, the tgc files are present. For some strange reason it does not seem to work on the demo discs described above. Other then these files mentioned, there does not seem to be much difference involving Super Mario Sunshine content except a few different menu screenshots (further analysis later).

I will keep that information for the next time I consider posting a thread

As I have an ISO of that demo disc, I can try to help with tgctogcm, I've used it with the Zelda Collections and various demo discs. I'm afraid I'm not actually at my computer and won't get back from school until ~15 hours from now though. If you haven't made progress by then, I'll see what I can do. The videos are either going to be .thp or some other file format I can't remember right now. If it's a .thp, I believe it can be uploaded directly to youtube. Otherwise use thpplay to watch it. For the other format, you'll have to dump the video from Dolphin.

That will be fine, I do appreciate the support you will be providing It does not seem to be working even in the command prompt or dragging and dropping the file onto the exe (which all other szstools can do flawlessly). The other possible file format you may be referring to is likely h4m.

I downloaded Tgctogcm from a Dropbox link, but I am not sure if that is the most recent version, and I have not found any websites that provide it along with their previous versions, so it seems that development of the program has been discontinued or hidden on some website. This mainly troubles me due to my suspicion that the program may be corrupted or it is incompatible with different localized tgc files. As speculation, Nintendo could have used some form of encryption, but that seems unlikely due to other successes in the final Super Mario Sunshine.

As far as progress, I will try to use Tgctogcm again using the two methods above, then search for other versions in the hopes that one of them will work. If it does not, I will try other versions in the hopes that they will produce different results. I have not started using a hexadecimal editor yet due to my lack of experience, but I will attempt to shortly.

If I made progress within the discs, I will mention them through edits below.

EDIT: With help from Ninjifox, I managed to finally open them. It turns out that you cannot drag and drop the file, you must explicitly state the output file, as it assumes the output file is (null) instead of (originalname).gcm as I hoped.

I have yet to explore the contents, but will be online later in four hours or so.

I wish I could be of more help here, but I believe I received the demo in an already-usable format. I just dumped the files using Dolphin's file browser.

The files in the NA demo were very close to the final version, aside from E3 content and minor dialogue changes. Unless the demos were created at different times for the different regions, the biggest difference you'll find is the dialogue I think. Of course, I don't speak Japanese, which means you'll probably have to go ask GlitterBerri if you start comparing Japanese dialogue.

Yes, the demos are created at very different times. The Japanese release was at July 2002, while the North American release was at August 2002 (both have the same month when the final version was released). A month of delay was the differences between three videos being removed and adding another demo (Star Fox Adventures), among other files, possibly the difference of wiping the messages file you mentioned on the Prototype page. There must be more due to it being the earliest known release of Super Mario Sunshine, which I will happen to mention below.

After converting the tgc files to gcm, I loaded all of them up into Dolphin and got these interesting banners (hopefully correct term) displayed. The Japanese demo is the 270MB one.

http://puu.sh/5JXf8.png

As you can see, they were produced at February 2002, the date where there was no official release of a demo disc for North America or possibly any other region. I am not sure what it could mean as of significance yet. As for the demo, I looked at the properties and noticed this.

http://puu.sh/5JYLY.png

The date is was created was April 10th, 2002. There could be a possible connection between that date and the demo discs released then within Japan or North America, or other events Nintendo related. For now, I will continue onwards to the other discoveries.

Other notable findings does include the messages.szs file that you mentioned in the prototype. After extracting that, I found the familiar station.bmg and system.bmg mentioned on the wiki, but I am not sure if it is exactly the same as the final Japanese Super Mario Sunshine version. Regardless, I uploaded them below if anyone could happily let us know the differences.

https://mega.co.nz/#F!3BUWSaLD!W-AzUTIQSgI40YlvDzDjXg

Anything else that catches my attention will be also mentioned below.

EDIT: https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Interactive_Multi_Game_Demo_Disc_2002-04

It seems that the April and May demo discs for Japan have no information whatsoever from the Dolphin Wiki or in search engines. It would be great if someone happens to have either of them in their possession and mention the contents. It could be possible that they contain something Super Mario Sunshine related. As speculation, if they happen to have them, it would truly be early in development for the game.

EDIT2: I noticed that the Japanese demo disc's "AudioRes/Banks" folder is smaller then the North American's (final release) "AudioRes/Banks" folder by about 1.6MB. There must be some changes to look forward to, so I will extract them using wwdumpsnd and find out what files have been edited or modified. I will have to do that tomorrow afternoon or so. Feel free to attempt to find out the differences yourself. Hopefully it is not simply new additions.

EDIT3: Nevermind, might as well stay up Differences exist! Here are the files that have changed and some that have not to display where it changed in a link below. Note that the files with (2) are the July 2002 Japan Demo Disc, while the ones without are the original Super Mario Sunshine North American ones, which was released in August. There are no different audio for the scenes, sadly. They are in the zip file in this folder below.

https://mega.co.nz/#F!3BUWSaLD!W-AzUTIQSgI40YlvDzDjXg (the same link above)

I will be continuing to explore the content later on tomorrow (give it 20 hours from my last activity). Feel free to add this to the wiki as differences between released versions

My upload speed is an abysmal 10 kilobits per second, I cannot do it in a reasonable amount of time. However, feel free to Google them up if you can find them

If you are unfamiliar upon extracting the iso files, change their extension to gcm, then drag and drop the gcm files to gcmdump.exe, which is located with all the other szstools. Once completed, continue to drag and drop files on the other executables that correlate to each extension. Example: szs files should be dragged to Yaz0dec.exe.

You should remove those links. Since this is a demo disc thing, it's fine if you host it somewhere like Mediafire and share it that way, but those are game ISO/ROM sites, which is against the rules to post.

Still, thanks for the link, I'll look into it when it finishes downloading.

Sorry about that, they are removed now. As far as everyone else wanting to access the files, please Google it

I finally got back home, so I will happily be searching through the files now. Updates coming in this post when available!

Looking into it now. I still need to extract the actual game part, since it's in some kind of .TGC file amidst a bunch of other junk.

Fun fact: one of the screenshots shows green Yoshi, but it also gives away how they pulled it off: Yoshi is completely hungry.

I actually have an argument to that point.

In the videos where Mario hops on the green Yoshi, he is always completely hungry, however Yoshi does not flicker during the whole video in Pianta Village (which has at least two seconds of Yoshi present), indicating either two things:

1. Yoshi disappears after a certain amount of time without any notice.

2. Yoshi was always green during that point of development.

I extracted the whole demo, however I got a ton of bti files and others that need to be accessed somehow, I will search up Google for that part. For the videos, I will need a hexadecimal editor in order to record those and upload them onto YouTube since I am using the H4Mviewer.exe or whatever it is called. I will have to do that later once I manage to access the rest of the files. As well, I will be extracting the North American demo right now to compare the two, since that should provide some more better understanding of changes.

All of the instances they show of Yoshi in all the trailers have him completely hungry.

Anyway, I already found two things. One is actually a subtle difference in the final apanese version that we missed. The other is... well, just look:

Once I rip the texture, we can try once more to read super tiny text.

Edit: It's in the Japanese final, too! Haha!

Edit 2:

I found a few interesting lines that F.L.U.D.D. never says in the game (at least, I never seen them) in the North American final version disc. They are located in the "data/common/2d/" directory. Some examples are:

"Leave it all to me! I will report if I see anything!"

The message below is ordered near the Peach Kidnapping scene, but I never seen it before, even near the Polluted Piranha Plant.

"This place is most unclean! Tidy it up with some water!"

Anyone remember seeing these before, and where they occur?

EDIT: I found a reasonably significant difference between the two demo discs. In the North American version, there is the thp file (stolennozuru.thp) showing Shadow Mario taking F.L.U.D.D., but in the Japanese version, there are no h4m or thp files regarding that at all.

I will continue searching for more differences tomorrow. Hopefully there will be some contents in the Japanese version that is far more interesting then these additions.

EDIT2: I found something to compare with for anyone who is interested

http://puu.sh/5L5Dy.png

This is the difference between both demos. The folder on the left is the Japanese Demo Disc, while the right is the North American one. As you may notice, some Japanese content was cut in certain scenes! If you have the time to check what they where, please do so. I will continue this search tomorrow at about the same time - three hours.

The difference is quite notable, and I have a feeling that 7-10 kilobytes compressed is far more uncompressed. That amount of data cannot just be Japanese fonts, could it?

EDIT4: I uploaded the ricco8 scene.bin files, they have notable differences! However, I have no time for tonight upon what models were removed in the scene, so I will upload them in the MEGA link above. I named them as "sceneJ.bin" and "sceneN.bin", hopefully you can tell which one is which. Please let me know what has changed and we can provide that information on the wiki.

As well, I found several extra files in the "ricco8/scene/mapobj" folder for the Japanese ISO that are not present in the North American version whatsoever. Names involve the word "nozzlebox". I uploaded them to the MEGA link above, I hope you enjoy

EDIT5: To lastly mention for tonight, I will be uploading the thp files that the Super Mario Sunshine page requested, which is the opening cutscene. It will be uploaded overnight in their original quality, so I will add those to the wiki soon

EDIT6: Here are the videos below. I will update the description to mention the differences between both tomorrow! Could someone please revise the Super Mario Sunshine page? I have no idea how to place the videos correctly in there, thank you

After some comparison, it seems that the nozzlebox files along with the audio files mentioned above consist of most of the differences between the two regions. The nozzlebox files are located within the Bianco Hills and Ricco Harbor scenes, under the Mapobj folder (which means Mapobject). Other then that, the mario.MAP and marioL.MAP are the other notable differences, which seems to contain some form of text that is not very obvious to understand its functions.

Here are the differences between the Japanese and US demos of Mario.MAP and MarioUS.MAP. There is a "Menu.cpp" referenced in the Japanese version, in contrast to the "JUTDbPrint.cpp" and "MovieDirector.cpp" in the North American version.

http://puu.sh/5LtAN.png

Going further down the MAP file, the "MovieDirector.cpp" is mentioned again along with another one called "JDRDirector.cpp" in the North American file under JSystem.a.

http://puu.sh/5LuBR.png

There are more, I will mention them later once I am sure that there is no other different content from the demos.

The videos are placed on the Super Mario Sunshine page, I will see if I can complete the rest of that To-do list along with finding more content.

EDIT: Currently I am attempting to edit the scene files to see if there are any other tracks that may be hidden in the final version. Later on I may use that knowledge to see what that nozzlebox thing means in the Japanese demo.

properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
