More stuff from Speedy Eggbert 2

This dialog box is inside the EXE. Entering a name doesn't make a dialog box pop up. This is also in the first game.

The demo version text is inside the "full" EXE, pulled out of the file resources:

199, "You have played the DEMO version of Speedy Eggbert."
200, "We hope you have had as much fun playing the game as we had making it !"
201, "This game is an original creation of EPSITEC SA, CH-1092 Belmont"
202, "http://www.blupi.com blupi@epsitec.ch"
203, "You have played Speedy Eggbert."
204, "We hope you have had as much fun playing the game as we had making it !"
205, "This game is an original creation of EPSITEC SA, CH-1092 Belmont"
206, "http://www.blupi.com blupi@epsitec.ch"
289, "Only available in the FULL version"
290, "The FULL version contains :"
291, "- More than 60 various single player missions"
292, "- 10 multiplayer missions"
293, "- Additional features for the mission designer"
294, "- Save and restore functions during the game"
295, "- Settings for 10 differents players"
296, "http://www.blupi.com/speedy"

This demo version button is obviously not used in the full version. Again, it's also in the first game.
Info: the demo version (which of the first game is a 16-bit EXE for some reason) shares the same IMAGE08/IMAGE16 folder as the full version.

Leftover strings I have mentioned before, but I have not actually written them:

280, "Dream, mission #%d\nOpen=%d, Lives=%d, Chests=%d/%d"
1017, "Dream"

Anyone with knowledge of the Multiplayer mode knows if this is used?

3200, "Now go on mission."
3201, "Very good, success on all missions !"
3202, "Last design resolved !"

There's a character select trick in both Puzzle Bobble 2 and 2X.
It involves inputting certain button combinations.

It needs to be done on the World Map, but between the two games there are some differences.

First, while on PB2 this can only be done at the starting point in the world map, it can be done anywhere in PB2X, even between levels or on restart after losing a level.

Second, this:
Character Button combination (PB2) Button combination (PB2X) Works in PB2 Works in PB2X
VS CPU Practice 1 1P Start + A + Down 1P Start + A + Down Yes Yes
VS CPU Practice 2 1P Start + A + Left + Down 1P Start + A + Left + Down Yes Yes
Monsta (VS CPU 1) 1P Start + A + Right 1P Start + Up Yes Yes
Packy (VS CPU 2) 1P Start + A + Left 1P Start + Up + Right Yes Yes
Woolen (VS CPU 3) 1P Start + Right 1P Start + Right Yes Yes
Light Bulb (VS CPU 4) 1P Start + Right + Down 1P Start + Right + Down Yes Yes
VS CPU 5 1P Start + Down 1P Start + Down Yes Yes
VS CPU 6 1P Start + Left 1P Start + Left + Down Yes Yes
Mighta (VS CPU 8) 1P Start + Up + Left 1P Start + Up + Left Yes Yes
Drabo (VS CPU 9) 1P Start + A + Up 1P Start + A + Up Yes Yes
VS CPU 10 1P Start + A + Up + Right 1P Start + A + Up + Right Yes Yes
Drunk (VS CPU 12) - 1P Start + A + Right + Down No Yes
Hands (Bust a Move Again) 1P Start + A + Down + Right 1P Start + A + Left Yes (uses pointer) Yes (uses cannon)
Computer (Bust a Move Again) 1P Start + A + Up + Left 1P Start + A + Up + Left Yes (uses pointer) Yes (uses cannon)
Sketch Bubblun - 1P Start + A No Yes

Sketch Bubblun (pictured below) is completely unused. Its tiles are already in PB2, but why is he only "selectable" in PB2X? Note this doesn't work in the Neo-Geo version.

Also, if P2 chooses this character, he will use the blue palette. No other "secret" character does this, but Bub does.

Wow, that makes me wonder if the "retro" graphics stored in Puzzle Bobble 1 are also supposed to be unlocked by a code, rather than just being some random prototype leftovers.

These graphics appear both earlier in the ROM and in the object viewer.

To be exact, a single frame of "Bubble Bobble" Bub appears in the object viewer much earlier than the other unused frames or the used ones, simply named "bubby". The other frames have a different object name.

Who knows... but a thing is for sure: Debug Dip Switches don't unlock it in the Neo-Geo version.

The B-System version has it too, but that's an even bigger mystery...

That's interesting -- how do you find things like that? Just by randomly using button combinations?

I guess that goes to show that the Sketchy Bubblun isn't unused like I originally thought. That Sonic-esque rabbity character on the other hand (despite having a full set of sprites), is definitely unused then if it can't even be selected through that cheat.

One day, while doing a playthrough of Puzzle Bobble 2X, I had accidentaly held down 1P + Up while selecting a new world. I didn't even know I was holding down those buttons.
The moment I realized I was playing as Monsta got me wondering how could that happen, so I made a savestate, but then I couldn't replicate it.
It took me some time to find out different button combinations were the "character select". Then, I wrote down all the possible combinations on a piece of paper, then on my PC (so I could always play as Drunk ).

A search on Google on this gave pratically no results, only the PS1 port gave results of this.

Even later (yesterday), I finally tried to see the differences when doing this in vanilla PB2. There are quite some.

Interesting things to note:

- You cannot play as "big" characters (VS CPU 7, VS CPU 11)
- That rabbit doesn't appear.

There may be even more, but this is what I could find.

This sprite sheet has it assembled.

EDIT:

I have found the address for the character (P1).

:maincpu.ppb@40DDFB
:maincpu.ppb@41ECCB

Add this very preliminary code to the end of the Puzzle Bobble 2X Cheat file.

And yes, THE RABBIT ACTUALLY WORKS! Value FC. It uses that pink palette, but he has no sounds.

It sure looks like Sonic, even moreso than before.

This cheat is very broken. Just use values FC-FD-FE-FF
Here's the video. Have fun!

Hah, awesome. He even skids like Sonic!

There's something even more interesting in that spritesheet, by the way. Those wheel graphics seem to have been made to illustrate how to play by using a handle controller, like those in Konami's Handle Champ.

Perfectly timed screenshot of the rabbit just because.

Anyway, onto the main topic of this post...

I don't think that's the reason. It's the main character in Bust-A-Move again.

This is normal:

This down here is not normal (requires button combination to use).

Anyway, that's the difference between "Character uses pointer" and "Character uses cannon".

Remember Bust-a-move Again and Puzzle Bobble 2 share the same GFX set!
Not the audio, as some tracks regarding the PB2 are missing in BAMA and viceversa.

There's a lot of test tracks and debug related stuff in Diddy Kong Racing DS. These are the file names of the obvious ones:
ARTUROTESTLEVEL.lev
BENTESTLEVEL.lev
LEVEL_DEBUG_MENU.lev
LEVEL_DWC_TEST.lev
LEVEL_FE_TRACK_EDITOR.lev
LEVEL_MB_TEST.lev
ROBTESTLEVEL.lev
SFXTESTLEVEL.lev
TREVTESTLEVEL.lev
wish_race_test.lev

I haven't tried much yet, but so far, file replacement just seems to make this show up:

I'm doing more experimenting as we speak.

More about PB2(X).

An interesting tidbit on VS CPU mode. The difficulty is tied to the round number (and other two values), NOT the character. Rounds bigger than 12 are even harder than the final boss!

Round - character list:
ROUND 1 - VS CPU 1
ROUND 2 - VS CPU 2
ROUND 3 - VS CPU 3
ROUND 4 - VS CPU 4
ROUND 5 - VS CPU 5
ROUND 6 - VS CPU 6
ROUND 7 - VS CPU 7
ROUND 8 - VS CPU 8
ROUND 9 - VS CPU 9
ROUND 10 - VS CPU 10
ROUND 11 - VS CPU 11
ROUND 12 - VS CPU 12
ROUND 13 - VS CPU PRACTICE 1
ROUND 14 - VS CPU PRACTICE 2
ROUND 15 - VS CPU PRACTICE 3
ROUND 16 - VS CPU COMPUTER (Unused in PB2)
ROUND 17+ - GAME CRASH

Case in point:

This is the hardest VS CPU round. It may be just shared data with Bust-a-Move again however (since that PC is the only character in the VS CPU mode of that game).

That's exactly what I thinking. In that round, if you don't get a head start, it's Game Over unless you're an expert player.

Anyway, I'm only curious to know where does PB2X load the level data for that round. It needs some more investigation.

While browsing the WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role disc, I came across this rather unusual video in the DMY file...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qIiSFcLtEg&feature=youtu.be

A tutorial video, straight from Evil Zone, a totally unrelated game altogether! Seeing as Yukes made both the WWF Smackdown games and Evil Zone, it's a fairly safe bet to say this video was a leftover from Evil Zone's code that by mistake (or deliberately?) was left to fill in the empty space on disc. The idea of an entirely American game having content from an obnoxiously Japanese fighter hidden on-disc is pretty chuckle worthy irregardless.

While I'm on the topic of Smackdown 2, I might as well put together some of my findings here:

Spliced in with the character portraits are 2 "generic male" duplicate portraits at random points. The portrait in question appears where it should be (at the end after all of the Superstars) later down the list, but the fact that 2 duplicates exist much earlier in is quite perplexing. On the note of portraits, there's also a corrupted copy of Rikishi's which appears in with totally unrelated graphics, although whether it was merely incorrectly drawn and replaced or intended for a new character altogether is impossible to deduce.

The entrance themes for Big Show and Ken Shamrock, both the same as in Smackdown 1, are present on-disc, in spite of neither of the 2 characters being playable (or even existing as opponents) under normal circumstances. I am aware that the 2 can appear randomly in Royal Rumbles labelled as "Unknown", but it seems that combined with the portrait discrepancies above, they may have actually intended to be playable before being dummied out.

The game features numerous unused lines by JR and King which suggest that play by play commentary, which wouldn't be introduced until Just Bring It, was considered for this game! Most of the lines are rather generic and don't refer to characters within a specific context, with no specific name mentions (although there are a few jabs at The Rock here and there) being dropped.

A few of the Superstars also feature unused dialogue quips, again, most of them coming from The Rock. There are however a few exceptions to this, as shown below. Stone Cold unusually features a sample which cuts off midway through:
"I am the Game." (Triple H)
"The time for talking is over! So let's do it." (also HHH)
"Welcome to Raw Is Jericho!" (Chris Jericho)
"Oh hell yeah!" (Stone Cold)
"Thank you very much." (Mick Foley)
"Have a nice day!" (2 clips of this, one by Foley and the other by Mankind, the latter straight from WWF Attitude)

Small update.

Porting the PB2X character select cheat over isn't as easy as it sounds. They switched the RAM position between PB2 and PB2X.

So, the code doesn't work under PB2. I could have been luckier, considering the game isn't much different from vanilla PB2. I may need to make a new code then.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
