Perhaps Mattrizzle was going to post something about this eventually but I think this is worthy to be heard here sooner rather than later. An earlier prototype of Diddy Kong Pilot has been publicly released. Mattrizzle and others over at DK Atlas have found some very interesting things lurking within the ROM.

By the way Admins, that link goes to the DK Atlas forum where a link to the prototype can be downloaded. I am assuming it is ok for me to post this because it is a prototype.

I guess the tilt controls are still in this game. Is it somehow possible to get those working? I mean I have a game with the tilt sensor that was supposed to be used in this title. Is there any way to get the game on that cartridge to replace the original?

As said on the wiki, while the game does recognize if the tilt controls are used, no emulator supports them.
A custom GBA cart would be required.

While it IS possible to hack the controls (see WarioWare Twisted controls patch), that's a different story (and it doesn't show how the tilt controls are handled).

So there's actually no way to have an emulator access the tilt sensor on the cartridge? Is there any way to remove the original game from the cartridge, put the prototype on it, and then use the tilt controls? I'm sorry about these perhaps stupid questions but I really don't have a clue about how this works.

I think WarioWare Twisted/Yoshi's Universal Gravitation use a different type of sensor though; both games only let you tilt to the left or right.

The only way (without an emulator with support for tilt motion, which doesn't exist yet) to make the tilt controls work is to write the game to flash cartridge. I'm not sure if that would be enough, considering it needs a special type of cartridge (see below).

The tilt motion is actually a standard feature of a special GBA cartridge (AGB-013), but it's rarely used.

To be fair, when I wrote up the article on TCRF, I didn't realize that some emulators, like VBA, do support some form of motion controls. They might work for WarioWare Twisted but they certainly don't work for DKP (at least for me). I don't know if it is because the motion controls were broken to begin with or maybe the game does motion controls differently compared to other games.

The easiest way to see the motion controls (if they actually work) would be to write an emulator the supports the feature. The only other option would be to get a flash cart that supports tilt motion features which sounds like a pain since I am not even sure such flash carts are made.

I have just checked it. You still need the controls patch to make WarioWare Twisted playable, as even through there are some motion controls capabilities on VBA ReRecording, they don't work yet.

This means we can't have a last word until someone can test this game on a special AGB-013 flash cart, but do they exist?

Doing a quick google search, I can't find such flash carts although I may not be searching right. I say just apply the WarioWare Twisted patch to the DKP ROM :specialed:!

The motion controls supported by whatever flavor of VBA might just be the MBC7 tilt sensor in Kirby's Tilt'n Tumble for GBC. That one's been documented etc. before anyway, not sure if that's the case with the AGB-013 too.

Yep, it's about the MBC7 sensor for GBC games (Kirby Tilt'n Tumble works), not for GBA motion sensors.

Yes, the outer part of the cartridge looks like that of Koro Koro Puzzle! I think only that game, Wario Ware Twisted, and Yoshi's Universal Gravitation made use of the sensor. While WarioWare Twisted used a different cartridge altogether due to also featuring a rumble motor, the cartridge of Yoshi's Universal Gravitation looked slightly different:

Hmm, I'm not sure if it is documented or not. A quick google search yields nothing for me so I am guessing it doesn't exist unless I didn't search right. Considering only a few games use it, that isn't too surprising I suppose.

The closest thing I could find for documentation in a quick search was a list of devices made by Nintendo for the Game Boy here and here (which isn't really documentation for how the devices work). From what I can understand from them, WarioWare Twisted does not use the AGB-013 game pak. That game uses the AGB-019 game pak. I guess it isn't too much of a surprise that the hack you mentioned didn't work for DKP since that game was designed for a different game pak.

I WAS WRONG ALL ALONG.

That's wierd there's absolutely no official documents either. Maybe one day something along the lines of the "Nintendo SGB/GBC Programming Manual" will come out.

Gah! Why didn't I think of that before? That is something I should have thought of since I've seen it before. That site has a pretty good documentation for the GBA and the DS. Along with the AGB-019 cart documentation you point out, it does indeed have AGB-013 documentation as well.
