| Yay video! I'll just paste the embed tag here in my post and... ... darn, it doesn't work. )-: Okay, well, here's a link! http://youtu.be/I5cs-CluIy8 Pardon the crappy video quality. I used a crappy camera. But hey, at least the audio is nice! Props to Jaxon+ for not only not using legendaries, but for bringing a Raichu to the party. __________ EDIT: Ehehehe, Pikachu single-handedly took out an Aegislash. Also a Tyrantrum, which defeated a Croboat, which defeated Mega Blaziken. The only thing that was missing from this fight was a legendary Pokémon, but it's saved in my Vs. Recorder anyway. ![]() |

| So there's this new move called Freeze-Dry that's nearly the same mecanically as Aurora Beam (just with 70 Power instead of 65), except that it's super-effective against Water opponents. Yeah. An Ice attack that's super-effective against Water. I'm not sure I like the precedent that's being set here. It's a move that outright violates the type-matchup rule. What's next, a Poison attack that's super-effective against Steel? A Psychic attack super-effective against both Dark and Ghost? What's the point of type relations if you're going to ignore them? I get that Ice is under-powered. It's weak to a bunch, resistant only to itself, and Freeze remains the only status effect that isn't guaranteed. But violating type strengths and weaknesses isn't the way to go about making it better. __________ In other news... Oh man, that was priceless last night. Last night before I went to sleep, I was playing some Battle Spot matches. Much to my surprise, of the dozen or so battles I had, absolutely none of them had a legendary Pokémon. I know, shocking, right? There was a Mega Gengar and Pikachu was messing with it. It tried to use Hypnosis on me, but missed and got hit with Thunder Wave and my other tricks, so I had it locked down. It kept hitting itself, being paralyzed and such, but finally got one last move through before I dealt the last blow. It was Hypnosis again, but it missed again. I saw the message "The match has been forfeited." and all of a sudden I won. I saved the replay, turned off the 3DS, and maniacally giggled myself to sleep. I'm not sure if he ragequit because of the lousy RNG rolls on Hypnosis, but the explanation I choose to believe is that he couldn't handle his Mega Gengar being beaten by a Pikachu (-:< |

That's basically the same role Hidden Power used to have, except Hidden Power gave more than one advantage. It was just a bitch to set up properly. (Now it's locked to 60 power.) Now let's look at who can learn it. Articuno: Helps with its coverage, in theory... in practice, though, Articuno's bulk makes a more defensive set a better option, using Ice Beam and possibly Hurricane for higher power and STAB - the latter is neutral to Water and with enough extra power to nearly negate Freeze-Dry's advantage, though it does need Rain Dance to be reliable. Vanilluxe: I can see it potentially being used here. Vanilluxe has shit for other options really. Cryogonal: Well, if you're really worried about water types, set up Sunny Day; Cryogonal gets Solarbeam naturally. Crazy, huh? Aurorus: He's terribly slow, rather fragile (mostly due to literally the worst type combination possible defensively), and weak to Water; I don't think Freeze-Dry or Thunderbolt will save him. And now to breeding. Lapras: Definitely has a case for it. Thunderbolt's main use here is as a counter to Water-types, as Surf and Ice Beam provide neutral or better coverage against everything else. Still leaves Ice/Water-types in question, though... unless it forces super-effective damage regardless of secondary type, that'd be weird. Piloswine: Horrid special attack, which Freeze-Dry runs on. STAB Earthquake is better against every Water type that's not Gyarados. Or Pelipper, but who the hell uses Pelipper? Delibird: lol
Ghost is neutral to Psychic, I think you forgot that.
You only ignore them at the cost of over 20% of the attack's power. I'm glad they're trying new things, especially since I've been playing since before Yellow was released. And so far, it seems reasonably balanced. Lapras always had Thunderbolt, and Aurorus probably would've gotten it either way, so they'd be able to do the same thing for slightly less damage. It should also be noted that Thick Fat resists this and doesn't resist Thunderbolt or Cryogonal's Solarbeam. |

Its base Power prior to Generation VI was in a similar boat, though it had the handy "-" designator in that case. Originally posted by Stigandr Why, because you can only violate type relationships if you're making a "not very effective" attack into a "super effective" one? I picked Psychic -> Ghost/Dark because it's weak to both and super-effective against neither; a perfect candidate for ignoring the game mechanics like Freeze-Dry does.In regards to Ice -> Water, I say they had the type matchup wrong from the outset. Ice should be resistant to Water, and Water weak to Ice. We're not talking about dropping an ice cube into a glass of water (in which case the water would win): we're talking about freezing super powers. Of all the types, Water Pokémon should be most susceptible to being frozen, since, you know, they're full of/made of water. ... But then again, that would just mean that Scald would be super-effective against Ice types and we'd be in the same situation... Clearly what we need to do is incorporate Shadow moves from Colosseum and XD. |

Adaptability, Tinted Lens, Filter, Thick Fat, Levitate, Lightning Rod, Volt Absorb, Dry Skin, etc etc. have outright changed tons of type matchups by negation or multiplication of type effectiveness or changing the effectiveness of NVE/SE/STAB hits. The type chart was never (and never has been) a sacred cow. My Doubles Team seems to work okay. There's a few holes, but I think I can fix them with some moveset changes. I cleared Doubles without any issues whatsoever, but Super Doubles have already started to pick at those team flaws. |

I'm noticing a distinct lack of legendary Pokémon in Battle Spot matches now. You still see a stray Mewtwo here and there, but I think that has more to do with the fact that it can Mega Evolve. I've seen only one Yvetal in the last week or so, saw my first two Zygarde last night, and I've never seen Xerneas or any of the birds. I mean, Articuno in particular is pretty helpful, what with all the Ground and Dragon opponents you tend to fight (I'm looking at you, Garchomp). On the bright side, I fought a Pikachu last night! I made sure to use my own. I lost. ![]() A few days ago I also encountered someone giving me a taste of my own medicine. I out-medicined him, but he taught me something I didn't know before: Klefki has Prankster, which gives priority to Status moves. It can also learn Thunder Wave, giving it a source of paralysis in addition to infatuation and confusion. I promptly went out to catch one and never looked back. Mega Banette also has Prankster, but it doesn't activate on the first turn during Mega Evolution. Between it and Klefki, I have a more reliable source of lockdownage than I did when I was just building for speed. I've still got a Noivern and Crobat on standby (Acrobatics works wonders against Mega Blaziken and Mega Lucario), but opening the fight with a priority Thunder Wave turns the tides from the outset. ![]() Speaking of Noivern, Switcheroo can't be used on Mega Stones. )-:< I'm proud to announce that I have a growing list of ragequits in my Vs. Recorder. I get cracked up every time it happens. Here's what I have so far! __________ Originally posted by Xenesis All of these examples is a Move or Ability that grants or revokes an immunity/resistance to a particular type or types. That's in a different category altogether, because "can now be hit by Normal moves" means any Normal move can hit, rather than having just one Normal move that's super-effective against Rock or whatever. As it is, Freeze-Dry is the only move that outright ignores the type rules. It is an Ice attack, and it it super-effective against Water. It doesn't need any status or fancy wingdings on the opponent to make that happen. No other Move, Ability or combination thereof can result in the same effect. Until now, the type chart has been honored in all cases. Reistances/immunities may be able to be changed during battle, but that's an effect of the moves/abilities designed for that purpose, not because of moves violating type considerations. As long as we're on the topic of violating type matchups, any idea how a Mega Kangaskahn hit my Mega Banette with Return? |

I was working on putting something together to make things easier for everyone in relation to friend safaris, tada:
Just quote me and copy the table and edit in whatever you know, or, if you don't know how to mess with HTML just post in the thread what you want added and me or someone else will put it in the table. Upon request I could also put this table in OP. (That goes for anything we would want there, actually.) Note: Use question mark for the third one if that player has not beaten E4 yet since last time you linked up with him/her, if you simply don't know one pokemon leave the field blank! ____________________ I have nothing witty to put here! |

Originally posted by 2Tie It's one of Normal (not Mega!) Kangaskhan's abilities. It's basically a free Foresight on it at all times. Mega Kanga always has parental bond, which makes Single Target attacks hit twice. I had a full 6v6 Doubles battle with my friend last night. Some things worked really well...some things did not. Notably, my team lacks an offensive presence outside of Kanga and Zapdos, plus I'm really really weak to Fire attacks as I got torn apart by his Volcarona. My Team: Klefki, Meowstic (M), Kangashkan, Zapdos, Shuckle and Gourgeist. His Team: Mamoswine, Rotom (Wash), Hydreigion, Gardevior, Volcarona, Aggron My basic strategy was to use Klefki to set up Screens (Light Screen/Reflect) while using Meowstic to disable other Pokemon. It has Prankster, which gives it priority status moves. I had a bit of glee when second turn I tricked Meowstic's Iron Ball onto Rotom, and Rotom died from his Mamoswine's Earthquake. Kangaskhan was my Mega Pokemon, and it was pretty mean, got off about 3-4 Power-Up Punches to really beat the living daylights out of anything that switched in. I was kind of screwed once it fainted though, Zapdos didn't have enough coverage and Gourgeist can't take Special hits at all well, so I'm thinking of replacing it. Shuckle ruins so many things with Power Split and Knock Off that it's ridiculous. And then it's even funnier because Shuckle suddenly eats face with the massively boosted attack Stat on Knock Off. It's kinda wrong . It has Acupressure as a gimmick move to power up its partner, but I can't help but feel that there's better things to put in that slot.Still it was a pretty good battle overall. |
