Btw, note that the first 20 or so models in BLOCKS.bin are repeated many times over throughout the file, so not all 1200+ models are unique.

Yeah, I noticed that I guess they used this "blocks" format for their "loading-while-playing" format, larger levels would consist of separate "blocks" so they could be loaded after each other. Locations like the Galleon have their own complete model, which we can't look at because they are compressed. God, thank you Rareware. Still waiting on Phil's response.

No doubt this is Dinosaur Planet stuff, there is tons of unused Krazoa stuff, it could be either a redesigned Warlock Mountain (There are similarities) or the mention Krazoa Palace/shrine from the DP script.

EDIT: This is where the Krazoa stuff starts.

There's also a SFA-like Cloudrunner fortress, the connected racing track, but totally different, Sabres Northern Wastes.

I'm a bit unsure about the Krazoa-Warlock theory

EDIT:

Warlock Mountain indeed got a complete makeover, including dozens of Krazoa statues.

EDIT:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKFJx-FQ86w

In this trailer, the Krazoa have already been added, but as flat textures.

Warlock Mountain went through many changes, it seems.

My observations and speculation on the areas in Blocks.bin:

starts on mod5, then goes to mod1

mod1: no idea... maybe down where the Kamerian Heart was excavated, or some as-of-yet-unseen area.

mod3 is a giant box, maybe used as the skybox or as a test room?

mod 4 is Warlock Mountain..?

skips to mod6, as mod5 is at the beginning

mod11 is very interesting... seems like an indoor complex, or at least a place that would have technology.

mod13.11 is the location of a minigame in SFA, located next to the WarpStone. From the trees and the appearance of a river, I think mod13 is Swapstone Hollow. Not sure what the spotlighted platform in 13.21 might be though...

No idea what 15 is

16 is Krazoa Palace, I'm guessing, even though the first couple chunks are technically Cape Claw. 16.27 is where this picture was taken.

17 appeared at first to be the original area for the Shopkeep because of 17.2, but now I'm not too sure.

19 is the Cloudrunner Fortress.

27 is the Snowhorn Wastes

31/32/33 are all Ice Mountain/Sharpclaw racetrack?

35 is the DarkIce Mines

36.4 appears to be the Galdon boss room, need to doublecheck.

51 is the Cloudrunner treasure room and the second JetSpeeder race, for the second SpellStone.

54 is the Kind RedEye boss room

file ends at the end of mod55.

This is amazing!
There're always A LOT of hidden goodies in Rareware games.
It might sound dumb but... with all these findings, would it be possible do a restoration of the game in a playable state?

I wonder if someday the original Dinosaur Planet ROM and Conker's Twelve Tales will leak to the internet. One can dream...

Of course, that's just the guy who's restoring it's take on how it would've been. No idea if it could be restored to playability, someone a bit more knowledgeable about these findings than I am would need to be the judge on this matter. It would be cool though.

You can see this if you use Dolphin's auxiliary camera while on foot. I assume this was done to improve framerate/speed of the game. If this was carried over from DP, I think it's safe to say that instead of handling each polygon, it just stops rendering a chunk of a level (as broken up in the BLOCK files) once it leaves the camera. Sorry if this is common knowledge, or someone pointed it out that I missed :/

Some games do this. I know LOZ: Twilight Princess does it, Halo (PC), but it's at about 180º where it stops the render for both, so you absolutely can't tell. LOZ: Wind Waker likely does this as well. I don't know of any others, as it's hard to find out on non-emulated games. Only way I found out about Halo was a DirectX exporter that exports the rendered frame as a model. Also, Halo is extremely flat when exported.

I don't think that 'The Wind Waker' does that too, looking at the map models reveals them in a whole piece instead of being split up.

I guess with the week starting back up there won't be any more findings till the weekend thereabout. Still anxious to see exactly how likely it is any of this can be compiled in to a ROM. I take it no one with the ability is in the mix trying to help yet?

The best shot we have right now I guess is Phil (lead developer of SFA / DP). I hope he's able to tell us how much of all this is usable and what our chances are. In the mean time, I'm looking into the Diddy Kong Racing ROM, which, judging by the file formats used, looks retardedly similar to Dinosaur Planet (JonTron anyone?).

Twilight Princess just doesn't render most things behind Link. Since Wind Waker is very similar, I'm pretty sure it would act the same way as Twilight Princess does.

Didn't get to experiment and code much the last few days, been sick, or rather still am. Still, some changes to "DP Remnant Viewer" as the viewer thingy's called now, mainly on the GUI side, but also in that I've applied some semi-arbitrary coloring to polygons - it's taken from data in the primitives that aren't actually colors, but serve well enough to visualize the models better, I think:

The previous rendering style can still be re-enabled from the menu, by unchecking the colorization and checking the wireframe options; will be posting a new build with all this later, I guess, and likely with the C# source, too.

Great work! Can't wait to try it out!

Impressive, really, it is. The colorization helps bring out the shape quite a bit more than before.

This may sound ridiculous, but we might be able to compile Dinosaur Planet. I have a few concerns though. I heard in a (few) Dinosaur Planet "tribute" videos that the game would have been shipped on a 512 MB cartridge (other sources say 128 MB so it might make more sense). But... all of the files that are located here come to a total of 52 MB.

The old console cartridges were measured in Megabits (Mb), rather than Megabytes (MB), so:

52 Megabyte x 8 = 416 Megabit

So yes, it would need a 512 Megabit cartridge.

Is that just you being hopeful, or do you know something and you're legitimately teasing us? Sounds like the latter which would be nice.

New viewer build: http://magicstone.de/dzd/random/SFAModelTesting_v001.rar

Camera controls are the same, but "archives" (if you wanna call the .bin files that) are now shown in tree form on the left of the window, instead of an ugly list of addresses like before.

Oh, yeah, also... you've probably seen this before, just without the colors:

...now what about this?

The viewer should now support - at least to the same extend it supports BLOCKS.bin - the various "mod##.tab" and "mod##.bin" files in the root directory of the image, which are in a somewhat different format compared to BLOCKS.bin. That there above is mod31, which appears to be the same racetrack, but with different and (maybe?) more detailed models. Note that mod## support is quite untested, ex. detection of this file format, loading primitive and vertex data, etc.

Also, anyone knows if those mod## files are what's actually used by SFA, or if those are leftovers, too? Dunno if that's been mentioned before.

The mod*.tab/bin are most probably used, in default.dol (the executable) is this debugging text:

PIFREE pitable[%d]BLOCKSTAB addr %d....%s/mod%d.tab

EDIT: Can someone try using rzip to decompress the files? (rzip:header)

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
