If I knew fusion in as much depth as I know mzm I would comb the g-values to try and find interesting stuff, but I'll have to leave this to someone else.

In fact, since I'm not going to get to make a nice video anytime soon, I may as well try and explain some stuff about selecting levels in mzm. Each area has a certain number of gate values associated with actual doors - tourian has the fewest with 0-42, and chozodia has the most with 0-244 - but the full range from 0-255 exists for each area. I found a simple way to make the game load most of the unused values:

say you want to load gate 96 in crateria (and I recommend that you do). load any room in crateria from the debug menu, then soft reset. crateria should be highlit in yellow. Now hover over chozodia and press select to bring up the room menu. scroll down to gate 96, then press b to cancel the menu. If you now load crateria, the game will remember that you were looking at gate 96 and load that gate.

The majority of these unused values just put you in random places in normal rooms, but some of them put you in test rooms, which are identical copies of finished rooms in other areas of the game (but without any loading zones). I've already checked every value (although it's possible I missed something), and the list of interesting rooms is very short. Crateria 96 is definitely the best one - that's the room that was completely removed from the final game. I also recommend using the map station in tourian 219 and seeing what happens.

this method only works for gate numbers up to 244, because that's the highest you can select from the debug menu, but there is another way to get the rest of the values. I'll explain that later though, I'm tired.
Your methods seem to work. I was able to load the rooms you mentioned without problems. Here are two pictures for those that are curious. I ripped the first image using the map viewer in VBA so that is why it looks a bit sloppy.

Speaking personally, I don't remember a room like the one in the first image. The doors don't work. The second room, while used, has the unused text that mobiusman has mentioned.

Good stuff mobiusman !

Edit: mobiusman, you can change the numbers that appear in the level select in the US MZM proto by going to address 0x03000055 and 0x03000056 in the memory viewer in VBA. So if you want to access numbers not normally available, this method would do it. You should still list your method you use to access values above 244.

I think I might have figured out what the "Main-End OBJ" option on the "etc" in the debug config does. I believe that it is used to show game and audio activity during gameplay. Check out this picture:

If you look on the left and right side of the screen, you will see a total of three sprites that aren't normally there during normal gameplay. On the left edge, we have a sprite for the number of missiles Samus currently holds. It changes to blue when R is pressed but that isn't significant. On the right edge, we have two sprites that are of Samus' energy gauge. They are a little hard to see because they are blue but they are there.

What the sprite on the left does is show game activity and it does this by moving down the left side of the screen. With little activity, it sits near the top left of the screen but I was going crazy with missiles in that pic so it moved down.

The two sprites on the right side of the screen monitor audio activity. The upper sprite shows the current audio activity level. The more audio activity, the more this sprite will move down the right side of the screen. The lower of the two sprites appears to show the max audio activity level thus far and will only move down further when the first sprite goes lower than it.

These three sprites only appear if Main-End OBJ is turned on from the debug config. Also, to see the three sprites, you must at least have missiles equipped and max out your energy supply. The best room to see these sprites going nuts is against Ridley. That room lags a lot if power bombs and diffusion missiles are used and the left sprite goes so far low that it disapears of the screen at times. Since it is also loud with lots of noise, the sprites on the right go haywire.

Mitch did show off the same room, yes. However, from what I can understand from Mitch's post, the room was loaded by messing with the options on the status screen. I don't think Mitch pressed select and scrolled through the list because you can load the room without going to the status screen.

At any rate, if I misunderstood, then I apologize.

Actually, I did press select on the level select menu, I thought you already knew that, which is why I didn't say anything about it, sorry.

And sorry for late response, I was on vacation for 5 days

Incase you want to go to the alternate ridley room, it should be under sr388 and be at the end of the list.

No it is my bad. Like I said, I didn't even realize that pressing the select button would bring up the mini menu even though the menu clearly says SELECT on it. I just wasn't thinking so I apologize.

I'm glad you were able to replicate my findings, cuber. Here's the complete list of interesting rooms I found (although I may have not bothered to write down some other duplicate addresses):

crateria 53 - spawns you in the ship room in crateria with the message "planet zebes". This is a spawn point in the final room, not a test version. It may be left over from an early version of the intro sequence.

crateria 96, 99 - the removed room, without loading zones. 99 has no collisions, although you can get them back by activating and deactivating noclip.

tourian 93 - a version of the ship room in crateria labeled "save room" (which is technically accurate!).

tourian 180, 181 - another copy of the removed room. obviously the loading zones here don't work either.

tourian 219 - the chozodia map room with a graphical glitch and very strange text.

ridley 180 - another chozodia map room with the same graphical glitch but normal text.

ridley 253, 254 - an unfinished version of mother brain's room in which her glass has no breaking animation.

I didn't check all the messages generated by save stations and map stations in test rooms, so there may be something else weird like tourian 219 somewhere out there.

I used the VBA code 03000056:14??, where ?? is a hexidecimal number between 0 and 255, to access the addresses above 244. I see this code bears a striking resemblance to the memory address you listed! As you can probably guess, the code locks the gate value at the chosen number, so entering any loading zone loads that gate instead. This code DOES work on the ROM of the release version of the game.

I'll check some of these out when I have a chance to. It looks like there could be some interesting stuff here. Keep in mind that some of these rooms might just be rooms that were improperly loaded and are normally used. Considering that you are having to go above the normal bounds that is allowed by the level select to find these rooms, that wouldn't be too surprising.

I used the cheat search function of VBA to find the 0x03000056 address. I am guessing you did too . The only difference between us is that you are modifying codes and I am using the memory editor straight. Using the cheat search function could also find the level select address in the MF protos as well.

I looked into the properties of the roms and found this:

Metroid Fusion EU Debug 09/11 10:23 -> Last modified: 04/03/13 16:16
Metroid Fusion EU Debug 09/16 16:57 -> Last modified: 04/03/13 16:13
Metroid Zero Mission US Debug 12/02 22:00 -> Last modified: 12/05/03 13:57
Metroid Zero Mission Debug EU 01/14 14:30 -> Last modified: 01/16/04 18:56

Looking at the last modification times you can see that the Metroid Fusion roms were modified in april of this year comparing to the Zero Mission ones that they were modified in 2003/04. This means that the Fusion ones were modified after the dump was made?

The file modification dates are when they were most likely dumped from the carts.

But if it was modified because of the dumping, why the zero mission ones still have modified from 2003/04?

I'm playing the spanish version of the proto, and found that there are text differences:

The best case scenario I can think of is that the MZM ROMs were actually dumped back in 2003/2004 and were just sitting around for the past 10 years on someone's hard drive or other storage device. As Sails already mentioned, in the best case scenario, the MF ROMs were dumped relatively recently.

It looks like you found a color text change. Looks like they changed the coloring to drop emphasis on some words. I don't know what those lines actually say since I can't read Spanish but I know that, at that point in the game, Samus is suppose to go open Security 1 locks to get to a data room to download bomb data. Of course, the security room isn't shown on the map. HOW CONVENIENT! There are probably other simple color changes to the text elsewhere as well so if you have eagle eyes, you might find more.

Expanding on the topic of unused, kargaroc386 found another unused room in MF that is both in the retail and prototype version of the ROM. It is easiest to see in the prototype ROMs of course. I'm posting this here so that it doesn't get forgotten about. Someone should add it to one of the MF pages.

<object width="420" height="315"><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/amAVmjSG_Bs?hl=en_US&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

...Am I the only one who thinks its sad that no page for the MZM protos has been created yet? If it were any other Nintendo prototype, it would have been documented on TCRF ages ago.................

Oooo another nice find. It is harder to point out color differences than layout differences in my opinion so nice eye! Looks like this is in the main boiler room in sector 3.

I found another one, but it is pretty small (that's the reason for the big pics), it is a tiny red dot on the left of "Level 4 lock" and you can see in the final version that this dot was changed to a black color:

Proto:

Final:

In the debug menu, in the demo option, if you set "c" on memo play it reproduces a scene that I don't know if it is unused.
Then from "d" to "f", an image appears:

Also in the debug menu, entering TEST 2 when getting to the invisible platform, jump and you literally falling through the floor, and it is possible to shinespark.

You can see the strange physics here:

<object width="480" height="360"><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/AiD8ypmcEQA?hl=es_MX&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

@DruidVorse

Holy shit kid. How do you spot such tiny minuscule pixel differences? Like literally, the differences between the locks from the proto to the final are mere pixels. You have really good eyes . To show this off better, I ripped sprites for the locks more cleanly using a tile viewer.
Proto:

Final:

And ya, because the difference is so small to see with the naked eye, I've blown the pictures up so others may easily see.

Proto:

Final:

For those demo options you mention, I think it is really just the elevator background to the "cutscenes" when Samus is taking the elevator. When loading those demo options, I can't seem to get the correct palette for it in the tile viewer but here is a clearer picture using a different palette:

If loading any of the other demo scenes where Samus rides the elevator, you can get a other palettes:

Compare those images with the background in this ingame screenshot:

So those values D, E and F do go unused but I wouldn't say the background goes unused. Considering D through F just (incorrectly) load the elevator scene for 2 seconds and then bring you back to the debug config, these scenes look more like filler than something that got cut by the developers. Still unused in any case.

And on the test rooms, not too much to really comment about or anything else I can really add there. I've screwed around in those rooms as well though:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZpuzTsPMRQ

It is hard to explain it in a technical sense but I think the reason why you can "fall through the floor" is because the room is much taller than the camera allows it to be (aka, the camera is confined to scroll left and right) so if Samus ever goes higher than the camera allows, the game reloads her at the bottom and vise versa. Interestingly, you can kind of see this idea and effect at play in a TAS of MZM in the link below:

Here are some small debugging features that I just found in the MZM prototypes.

When the game is started from the debug config menu, you have access to the debug menu to toggle items. That menu is opened by pressing R on the map screen. If you hold Select and then press R on the map screen, you get the normal status screen. In normal gamplay, the status screen is just brought up by pressing R on the map screen but the debug menu takes its place when the game is loaded from the debug config. I presume the purpose of this feature was to check and make sure the status screen was displaying abilities correctly.

The other feature I discovered is that if you hold down L and Select and open the map screen (press Start), you will obtain map information for the area (Brinstar, Norfair, etc) that you are currently located. The same map animation that plays when you obtain map data from a Map Room is played here. My guess is that it is just a way to test the animation. Map data can also be obtained via the debug menu.

From what I can tell, these are unique to the MZM protos. The MF protos don't seem to have these functions unless I'm just not doing the combos right which is possible.

I found different background color for the Yakuza and Ridley-X rooms:

Proto version on the left, Final version on the right

-

Before defeating Yakuza:

-

Yakuza doesn't change color when doing the space jumps while attacking, it's all the same with the other bosses.

--.

Excepting Mega Core-X: he doesn't have his little cores surrounding him:

Standing:

-

After defeating Yakuza:

-

There are many sounds in the debug menu that I believe they are leftovers of the GB version, and some are from the little green monitor, that is on the left of the map, showing the status of Samus, its like an electrocardiogram, from the beta version.
FusionIkusu, the youtube uploader of the beta videos, says " it is a Heart Monitor that checks the status of the X Parasite within Samus' system.
It resonates with the X in her system. The more damage she takes, the more it reacts. Requiring her to absorb more.
Most likely another way to show her damage since there may not have been plans for the in suit alarm."

-

As for the secret message that was requested I have done it by using two methods: 1) by Shinesparking 2) by Kunzile method (look in youtube), it is the same on proto and final versions.

A bunch of nice finds. As far as the sounds(uh... which sounds by the way??) in the debug config are concerned, you can't say conclusively that they were for the heart rate monitor. Not unless you specify which sounds heard in the videos correspond to sounds in the debug config. The heart rate monitor probably did have something to do with health monitoring but, without that particular version of the ROM, it can't be said conclusively. We are lucky to have these late protos of MF and MZM to begin with so don't hold your breath on answering that question. You also mention that a lot of the sounds in the debug config come from the GB version of MF which isn't something that can be backed up. At best, any unused sounds we come across can only be said to have been used in earlier versions of the game.

I said that because I'm a native spanish speaker, and to explain the method entirely would take me a lot of time, it's not hard for me but it takes me some time.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
