I have been recently using my image viewer (App I made) on a few select decompressed CHDs, and discovered a few images in CarnEvil and Wargods. Has anyone seen any of this (would like to know before I start creating pages)? Any help is appreciated.

Never seen those before.

Even if someone has already found that stuff, it's not on TCRF yet, so go ahead and add it!

Cool, I'll start creating the pages later when I've finished watching my kid for this evening. Thanks for giving them a look over .

Oh, you're messing with other Arcade games?

Can I request something? Yes? Thanks!

It's for the game Task Force Harrier, there seems to be multiple endings in the game, but I don't know how to trigger them. Here are the two that I found:
http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/arcade/d/taskfor.htm

Basically, at the last level. you have to destroy a plane before it escapes. If you don't, you get the bad ending. If you do, you get the "good" ending. The problem is that the "good" ending says: "But the enemies were not destroyed by your attack", which leads me to believe there must be a real good ending hidden somewhere. Maybe unused?

I have tried doing everything I can in the game to such as maximizing my score, beating every enemy, not dying, not continuing, beating multiple loops, etc. and nothing triggers the supposed good ending.

So, you think you can take a look at the game and see what you can find?

I'll see what I can find when I get some time. Hopefully that will be soon.

I have a question. The content in CarnEvil I found was in a smaller resolution than what the game actually outputs. The game apparently stretches its screens from 256x256 (size found in rom) to 640x480 (actual screen resolution). I am unsure on whether to leave the images as is (their actual resolution in the rom), or to stretch them as they would have been displayed on the screen. Anyone know what to do in a situation like this?

Always leave textures and images in their original size.

Has anyone here looked at Atari arcade hdd image files? They all seem to follow this format:

1.) They usually contain a full set of graphics including title screen for another game they have created, or one of their partner developer they are developing the current title with (IE: Midway). Examples off hand would be Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey which has pretty much all the art, title and credit screens for WarGods. War: Final Assault contains Maximum Force. I believe California speed has Area 51 art. The rest I don't remember the "pack in" game.

2.) The game data for the game the hdd image is suppose to be for starts after the art from the *packed* in game.

3.) The data for the game it is suppose to be is duplicated many times, though not because of different resolutions. The reason is unknown as to why it is duplicated (maybe someone knows?).

I have to wonder why Atari such a lazy company to leave all of that previous game's data in their "brand new" games coming out? Could it have possibly been to thwart piracy due to the increased file size of the dump (I'm sure the extra art is making these huge, and since hard drives were relatively small back then it would not be worth the effort)? I know it has really deterred me from looking in their games for unused content when most of the disk is unused to the game in question.

Can you give some examples? I suppose I could try some MAME torrents, decompress them using chdman, but i can't do anything from there (lack the tools).

Like everything, exceptions can (and are) made if the image itself is, say, 256x512 but displayed at 512x512, in which case I would be perfectly fine with nearest-neighbor upscaling (since it's exactly 2x wide).

This is the case with a few PS1 graphics that are stored at half-vertical resolution, iirc.

For the example given, though, since it's not integer-based resized and the aspect ratio isn't changing much, just leave it at the native size.

Just an assumption, but is it due to either reduction of load times, or in case a bit of the HDD gets damaged, the file is read from somewhere else?

Sure. Here are some pics from my viewer looking at Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey:

War Gods Title:

War Gods Credits:

War Gods Ending:

Now don't get me wrong, the whole game's art isn't within Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey, but a lot of it is and completely unused with no reason for it to be there. There are also full sprite sets for some of the characters in there (not pictured here).

Might be, but I lay my money on more of the lazy aspect than them actually planning for bad sectors or drive failure as they would most likely want to make money from new drive purchases if they failed.

Perhaps those graphics are present in those dumps because the old games (or outdated versions of the same game) were just deleted and then overwritten by the new ones?

As in, even if you "delete" a file from a hard drive or even format it, the files will really be still there until they get overwritten by something else (which is why they can be recovered from hard drives)?

Yes, something tells me that they just reused unsold hard drives, loaded them up with the new data, slapped them in new hardware, and called it a day.

I agree. They most likely make a ton of them, but only get to sell so many. If they don't write 0's to the drive, then it would preserve pretty much anything that was there for the most part. Seems they did it a lot though, and are pretty much the only company I see doing this (out of all the chds I've tried that is).

I am using a modified version of the KI Viewer that allows for palette hacking, along with some other features that are currently in beta. If you wish to grab a copy of this unfinished and extremely beta build let me know.

Judging from the corruption midway through some of the images, it looks like they just quick-formatted a hard drive that was used for another game, and dumped the new game on it. That noise over the images would be filesystem structures and non-image files (or compressed image files, e.g. JPEG). If you dug around you'd probably find lots of other files from other games, though not likely anything you wouldn't find used in those games.

It's a bit questionable whether it's worth documenting these, because they're not unused resources in the game, but just the remnants of what was on the disk before another game was put on it. More like an overdump than unused data.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
