When loading a savestate that I saved during the world A-1 intro graphic, various variations on this screen show up for a single frame:



I realize the garbled graphics are likely an emulator-specific random happening, but I'm curious as to where the text is being pulled from in the ROM, as this appears to a port of the "Fantasy World" 9-1 intro text that appears in FDS Super Mario Bros. 2 after beating world 8 without using warps. However, this screen never appears (to my recollection) in SMAS. Interesting that there were quotation marks in the original FDS game's font graphics, but apparently not in SMAS-SMB's.

I've never played SMAS in full but I don't think that world 9 is unused according to this article from Mario Wiki and according to this youtube video. These references both indicate that world 9 is reachable using the same method you listed. Of course, I can't confirm this directly myself but these sources seem legit.

I agree that this is unused. None of the fonts used by SMB or SMB:LL have apostrophes or quotation marks in them. There is an updated period in the 2bpp font used in the HUD, but that doesn't use the same tile values as the 4bpp font.

@Cuber456: jdaster64 wasn't saying World 9 was unused, just that this special message doesn't appear when reaching it.

Also, at 7F5BB-7F64E is this:

It's the message that appears when getting a Game Over after reaching World 9 in the original FDS version. I'm not sure why the N is glitched (A quick search revealed this to be the case in the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World ROM as well. I haven't checked the Japanese version yet.).

Change 7F35D from 3C to BB to see it.

Yeah, I was using SMAS+SMW (U) when that text appeared. Strange that they didn't even bother localizing the text properly before removing it ("9 world", "one game"?), although I suppose it was probably left in, unused, in the Japanese version of SMAS first.

Well, the "we present fantasy world..." text is used in the FDS/VC version of lost level when you reach world 9.

IIRC, SMAS doesn't do that. Instead after completing the final level without warping to any world, the game takes you directly to 9-1 without any text.

That's correct. I probably wouldn't have thought anything of this or noticed it at all if I hadn't just been playing the FDS version, though.

It doesn't seem to be a coincidence that the "100000 PTS. FOR EACH PLAYER LEFT" text's palette settings cause it to be outlined in a pinkish color unused by anything else in the game.

Interestingly, there are a couple of differences from the original text:
  1. "B" was changed to "Y" in the button prompt, as the default controller configuration in All-Stars maps the NES's B button to the SNES's Y button.
  2. "SELECT A WORLD" is replaced with "START A URA-WORLD," referring to the hard mode, as it isn't possible to select a world from the title screen in the All-Stars version (and would be redundant anyway).


I'm still not done yet!


Graphics for an older version of the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 logo are present in all versions of the game, in the Super Mario Bros. graphic set. Compared to the logo used in the final version of Super Mario Collection, the typeface is longer, there is no "For Super Players" subtitle, and the stars which mark how many times you've cleared 8-4 still exist.

I'm inclined to agree, based on what else is unused -- 16-bit renditions of the old 8-bit Super Mario Bros. "scenery" tiles, the small slot machine graphics and updated brick walls of Super Mario USA, and pretty much all of the unused graphics of Super Mario Bros. 3 (most obviously the upgraded spiral clouds and hills).
