I can't see this happening. GBA got shafted last generation because the cartridge slot probably caused the DSi more problems than it was worth. The (3)DS cartridge slot is unified, and always will be.

I would have bought that if it looked just like the original 3DS aside from the lack of 3D effect ... but the design for that is too ugly for me to handle

Also I need it in my pocket often. :|

It ultimately depends on the amount of money saved by removing the hardware to play DS games. In my opinion, its not something that would happen until near the end of the 3DS' life. Lets not forget that the same sort of thing actually happened with the Wii when it had backwards compatibility for GameCube games removed. That happened near the end of the Wii's life cycle but it still happened. Cutting hardware is a simple trick to try to lower the price of a console on its way out. It makes a console more accessible to more people which rakes in more money before the console is really dead.

Honestly, if you hadn't bought a Wii by that point (or even knew what it was), you most likely aren't a gamer and don't even know what a GameCube is. Not to mention that if you actually wanted to play GC games, picking up a used GC and game is much cheaper than a new console. I could imagine a similar case happening for the 3DS. Hell, why not have a version of a 2DS that can only play 3DS games ? Its two ways to cut costs and save money. I can totally see that happening much later down the road.

Why not just buy the original one and never turn on the 3D effect? Or is it just the price drop that interests you?

I've got a 3DS, but I never use it in 3D. People tell me I've wasted my money by buying a 3DS but not using the 3D feature, for some reason.

Nintendo say that they've created the 2DS so that anyone under seven (who can't look at 3D screens) can play 3DS games. There's always Parental Controls, you know. "Display of 3D images", just simply restrict that before letting children that young an age play on a 3DS!
However, I once discovered that if you hold L.R and X as the system is turning on to head straight to the Touch Screen Calibration (or L,R and Y for circle pad), you can display 3D images, even when it's been restricted by Parental Controls!

It's a bit of a clever play on the name you have to admit, but yeah, I think Nintendo needs a better marketing team or something.

DS, DSi, 3DS, 3DSXL, 2DS, Wii, Wii U...those names all make sense from a philosophical and artistic standpoint, but probably have a lot of people confused, especially in their expanded demographic of people who don't normally play games.

The 3DS XL's 3D switch also locks into place for turning off the 3D, so there's that. (Works for me anyway; I can't use the 3D because I can only see out of one eye.)

The 2DS was marketed as both being for the under-seven market and as an "entry-level" (price point wise) system, so there's clearly an even more specific market they are targeting here, heh. We'll have to see how this plays out.

Probably pretty close to $0, unless removing the DS-specific silicon from the ICs somehow makes them significantly cheaper. (Also keep in mind that removing DS compatibility would render all DSiWare--a huge portion of the eShop--unusable, which would not be a wise business decision.)

The Wii is a different story; they removed GameCube compatibility because it meant they would no longer have to manufacture the controller ports or memory card slots, which very few people were likely using by that point.

Well if the amount of money saved from removing such parts was close to $0 then, I agree, it would pointless. Saving a few $ on a device that is over $100 doesn't really get you much. You would have to be in a tight situation for that to be beneficial.

For right now, the consumer base for DSiWare is 73.77 million (3DS + DSi units shipped, numbers pulled from wikipedia) which is a little more than twice the consumer base of the 3DS. It makes sense that a huge portion of the eShop is DSiWare since (it was around first but) you can reach a larger audience and make more money. If the 3DS sells many more units than the DSi then I would expect DSiWare to start to decline. Especially so since 3DS has more capabilities than the DS.

Here is something that I had long forgotten and then recently remembered about the 3DS. It can be used as an MP3 player. It would be a cool feature to use if the battery life lasted longer and the 3DS had a higher volume output.

My 3DS outputs a louder volume than my brother's.. To the point where it distorts SF64 3D music when on full volume x.x

I had heard that, but I couldn't find any such feature.
It is part of the 3DS Sound software. You simply drag an MP3 file into your SD card from your computer (literally just put it in the first directory of the SD card). When you load 3DS Sound, you will see an option that says something like "SDCARD" on the touch screen where you can play whatever you put onto your SD card. If you wear headphones you can close your 3DS and listen to whatever you play.

I see, so it's not really a fully featured music player, but just able to load MP3s in the sound toy thing. Interesting it supports MP3 though. Wii used to support them too, but actually removed that support in a system update in favour of another format due to licensing issues.
