So I just happen to be dicking around with some clones of Final Fight on MAME for the purposes of playing. I boot up Final Crash (the bootleg) in Test Mode by accident. Oho, what do I find?



Don't be fooled. This isn't the same scroll test from the other versions of the test menu of the game.

Scroll Test 2 tests the stages, Scroll Test 3 tests backgrounds, and Scroll Test 23 checks both. Upon initially going into any of the menus, you won't see much of anything except a level indicator. Press Button 1 to change the level, and Button 2 to confirm.



From there, hit button 2 to change the speed so you can actually move around and check things out. When you've had your fill of that level, press Button 1 & 2 to go back to the main menu.

Now, honestly, I know this is a bootleg version, but I can't imagine that the bootleggers would be so savvy enough as to create a whole new set of debug options for a game already created. I'd be willing to bet that this is an unused piece in the other versions of the game. Also, there might be the potential for more menus?

I place the ball in your court, as my hacking skills aren't that great.

Back when I was dicking around with MAME's debugger (my first actual debugging attempt), I found these strings loaded into memory. I recall seeing some test options in there, too. The text is interleaved in the roms somehow, the text will only show up correctly when the game is running.

Anyway.

I started messing around with the games and guess what I found~

You don't need to hold down the third button (set as Cheat in MAME). You only need to hold down Button 1 to get the Scroll test. But if you hold Button 2 instead... you get an OBJ pattern test menu!



Press P1 Up and Down to change the animation, P1 Left to add a crosshatch behind or overlayed on top of the character, P1 Right to change the background color, P1 Button 1 to play the animation, P1 Button 2 to reset the animation.

P2 Up / Down changes the selected value in Normal / Size / Body / Attack. Press P2 Button 1 to select the option, which ... does things. Body adds a bunch of crosses on top of the character. Press P2 Button 2 to unselect an option and be able to change it to something else. I'm just not sure how to change the character. It's always stuck on Guy.

The game has a special ending in the Japanese version, I'm waiting for the site to become unbroken so I can add them. I can't believe no one has done so yet

Hmmm site seems to load fine on chrome but not firefox...
