Sorry, I'm tired enough that I just let my head hit the keyboard. Anyway, moving on...


At some point in E_FUTURE I'm going to update mediawiki and maybe migrate the default stuff over to vector instead of monobook (the skin).

would anybody have any issues if i added some links to other sites (dykg/unseen64/etc?) and/or a leaderboard ad across the top? (same no-flash pw ads like the skyscraper one to the left)

this is all just theoreticals but i'm throwing it out there to see what sticks

I don't see why there'd be an issue with linking to other sites with similar themes.

As for ads, I don't care either as long as they don't make noise or take over the mouse / window.

That's what "dykg" means dude...

I'm totally fine with those ideas, Xk. More indirect traffic generation on one side, and some supporting (monetary-wise) expansion until it gains more favor (given it does increase access by a fair enough margin?).

I can't say I like the idea of banner ads at the top of the page at all, but if we're seriously hurting for revenue...

I prefer Monobook over Vector and a huge banner ad at the top might annoy a bunch of people though (see also: popular reception to Wikipedia's donation drives). I don't see a problem with anything else (maybe throw in wow cool facts about gaming as a joke =P )

No real opinion on what stylesheet the site uses, but an update at some point would probably be nice.

The prevailing opinion about DYKG at least seems to be that it's terrible, but I have no personal objection to the wiki linking to them or others.

As for a leaderboard ad, frankly I would block it. The ad spot in the sidebar doesn't actually interfere with the layout of the content, while a top ad would, which kind of breaches my threshold on the scale of putting up with inconveniences to support the site. I imagine you'd get something of a tradeoff--extra revenue from the banner vs. lost revenue from people like me blocking it.

I know there's some crossover here, but I'm shooting more for "realist" than "dick".

Honestly I'd prefer leaving the ad at the side as it is right now, especially since one is likely to scroll down with most articles anyway (so you aren't likely to miss it unless you're already trained to ignore ads for starters).

I'm thinking I could always do something like having the ad show up if you're not logged in, but have it go away if you log in.

And of course you can change themes to get away from it, yeah. Vector will eventually have the sidebar one added at some point, though.

...and the thing with leaderboards is they seem to be a lot more popular to use than "normal" ones. I'll throw some tests together and see what works.

We're not really hurting for revenue, but TCRF doesn't pay for itself (and the money made from ads can be reused to advertise for TCRF at other places, too).

This would be good. That way the ads don't bother the regular contributors who tend to load / reload the pages when working on stuff.

Not a bad idea. I can deal with ads as long as they don't get annoying or go in front of text when viewing a page in peculiar resolutions.

I've never been bothered with the ads here, and i feel pretty okay with ads getting added as well as keeping the ads when logged in, as long as they don't move across the page like on Yahoo
