First time encountering this too. I've never played the GBA version heavily, so I'm assuming NOA's script was inaccurate to the Japanese in the SNES release. Nintendo was only good at localization after Ocarina of Time.

This isn't a definitive answer, but FFIV Easy Type revisited parts of the script. It's probably somewhat more common than you think.

The Easy Type version of FFIV is a little bit different though as it was released almost simultaneously as a simplified version aimed for RPG-beginners. This one was done ten years later, but yeah, it may be more common than I think, and for this one they also changed more than just the text, making it more than just a simple re-release.

From comparing several literal translations of the original I actually think they did a surprisingly stellar job localizing this game the first time around, sure there are a lot of mistakes and censoring here and there but overall it's very good, especially considering when it was done, it's nowhere near the level of FFII (IV).

it's quite obvious they didn't start from scratch for the GBA version. And most of the original mistakes, censoring and errors are still there.

I just found a video of much better quality on the promotion of the Famicom Disk System in which it is possible to see several pictures of a very old version of The Legend of Zelda. With this video, it is possible to see that the Heart Container were really different. The other interesting thing is the number of keys to the infinite which is replaced by a small heart.

That video also shows the Darknut shields seen in the manual and "Tips and Tactics" book that you could buy as opposed to the cross found in the final game.

On the subject of the boomerang, did anyone else notice it was shown on the IT'S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE screen? IIRC there were people who liked to play some Zelda games by only using bombs (I forget which game), but the option from the start puts things like that into perspective...

I just wrote an article on the prototype of The Legend of Zelda for my website "Triforce Legend". I tried to do as much research as possible and I found some interesting stuff. Here are a few:

"03" is the Magic Sword, which is the default item in the game.

Another very interesting thing, I changed the light on the two maps drawn during the development of the game and were presented in the "Iwata Asks" dated February 2010. You can see that some rooms are whiter than others, these are the rooms added in the prototype and that have been removed with correction fluid. Some lines are also redone with a marker.

I've had worse loading times. With the brand new PS2 I got many Christmases ago, I got a copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

I still have this game, sheerly to compare loadtimes with. If any game manages to, by all the good names of the gods, take longer to load than said PS2 game, I will probably just burn it in fire to save myself the pain.

Also, I use this to demonstrate to anyone who complains about 360 load times with uninstalled games. Those are better than that mess of a game's excuse of load screens.

Back on topic, it really is quite a nice video. I can't tell too many differences off the top of my head, save the boomerang/ sword choice. Nice option, wonder why it was removed.

The prototype of The Legend of Zelda was put on sale on Yahoo Auction, an April 26, 2005. But it would not be his first appearance on the internet. His first appearance would have come at the beginning of 2003 with the picture of the white disk.

Interesting. Besides the dungeon names being present, every room is for some reason displayed as two squares on the map instead of one rectangle, and the positioning of the cursor seems to follow this room-split... weird. And there's that early block design again. Also, the game uses the regular "NES-font" for the alphabetical characters instead of the unique font it would later receive.
