I suspect the Datel engineers didn't really understand how the N64's video registers work, so they guessed and got it wrong. It doesn't really matter, since most (if not all) games will use the SDK's video modes, and dumping all 4MB of RAM to find the frame buffer is really easy.

To get at the frame buffer like I did, you'll need to use GSCC instead of Datel's tools. You'll also need rubbing alcohol (to clean your cartridges, GameShark, and parallel ports) and something to convert the frame buffer to an image file.

Follow the instructions to set up GSCC, then open the Ram Edit window. Use the Dump to File button to... dump the RAM to a file. To dump OoT's frame buffer, set the start address to 0x803B5000 and the end address to 0x80400000. To dump everything, set the start address to 0x80000000 instead.

I used Tile Molester to browse the RAM dumps. It's good enough for locating the start of the frame buffer, although you'll need to find some other way to pull images out. (I shoehorned my N64 texture exporter into doing the job; you can use its source code as reference.)

Should we put games like Super Mario Bros. Crossover in categories like "Unlicensed Flash Games" and "Unlicensed PC Games"? I'm not really sure I like having games like that on the site in the first place, but considering we have an "Unlicensed NES Games" category and such for pirate ROMs, I feel this would be the better alternative to removing them altogether. Otherwise, there's nothing to categorically distinguish these fangames from official games.

There's no such thing as an unlicensed PC game, though.

The whole licensed / unlicensed thing is only for consoles since games have to be approved by the console manufacturer before being allowed to go into production / for sale.

Well, that depends on what you think "licensed" implies. If you are referring to the licensing procedure to make a game for a console, then I agree. If "licensed" is intended to refer to any usage of trademarked characters, then in a sense games like SMBC are in fact "unlicensed" - I would be very surprised if the use of the various characters was indeed properly licensed. Perhaps there should be another name for such a category? "Games with unlicensed characters"?

Usually when this kind of thing happens it is called 'Unofficial' or 'Fan-made'. They are the same as most other Flash games and therefore don't need their own category.

I was thinking of it in terms of licensing of intellectual property to a company, not strictly in the video-game-production sense. The LEGO Flash games would be properly licensed, since the LEGO company commissioned them to be made. (That was probably very poorly phrased.)

Not that I wanna argue or anything over that, because I agree that hacks should be off the website, but it's a bit hypocritical seeing how you DO have hacks on the wiki.

They are from the NES era, yeah, released on actual cartridges, yeah, perhaps don't resemble the original game, but they're still hacks.

Fanmade hacks are one of the few times notoriety should come into play into TCRF, I think. It's a tough point that could go either way, because some might genuinely be interested in what else super-popular hack A was planning but got put on the chopping block due to trouble/time/etc.

Also no, unlicensed cart-released games do not count as hacks.

Even if they ACTUALLY ARE hacks of games? Like, say, Noah's 3D Ark thing. It's an obvious Wolfenstein 3D hack. I know it has a history behind it and all, but it's still a hack.

Yes, but it was commercially SOLD. This is the only type of hack that we document, which includes one of the most famous hacks of all time: Super Mario Bros. 2 (aka Super Mario Bros. USA). Not to mention Ms. Pac-Man amongst many others.

Uh, that wasn't a hack. The game engine was properly licensed by Wisdom Tree. They just ... turned it into that thing.

Officially sanctioned game modifications -are not hacks-. They may behave like one, but if they paid for permission to do it, well.

URIs must be properly escaped, they must not contain unescaped
characters below U+0021 including the space character and not
above U+007E. Tidy escapes the URI for you as recommended by
HTML 4.01 section B.2.1 and XML 1.0 section 4.2.2. Some user agents
