I forget, but if a game has remnants of test rooms (but no actual maps or way to load them) does that count as unused areas? Ghostbusters Sanctum of Slime has some leftover "NAVMESH" and "TACTICALDB" (enemy AI / scripts, I think?) data for two enemy test maps, one trap test map, and one powerup test map, but as far as I can tell, there aren't any maps to go with them.

That server is still sitting at home. I said fuck it and went with a Linode. Easy backups and no worrying if a hard drive bites the dust.

More importantly:

- apache2 -> nginx
- php 5.2 -> php 5.3
- php-fcgi -> php5-fpm
- nothing -> apc

It makes a difference.

I've got a bit of confusion about whats suitable for a wiki. I've recently uploaded 4 gif files (Killer Instinct 2) to the site, providing it some sort of content instead of linking to youtube (which one day the video may be removed), but had the gifs criticized for quality (which I can understand and had no problem trying to correct) by an admin (BMF54123). I then re-uploaded higher quality gifs (spending my personal time again to please the admin) that are below or equal to the 2 mb limit (a lot higher quality), which were approved by another admin (Divingkataetheweirdo), but then deleted by another admin (xkeeper), because he feels they are too big for gifs, and would prefer video on youtube instead.

Now lets see here, we have a 2 mb limit on files for a reason, and we want content on the site that is not comprised of youtube videos if possible. How are we suppose to provide content if people feel the need to just go and delete peoples hard work? I don't really like to make gifs of video, but I'm not going to upload a 2 seconds video to youtube for something I can just create an animated gif for (under 2 mb). And you may say "hey just rip sprites instead", but after the removal of content I've taken my time to create (twice), I'm surely not spending more time to have it removed again.

I really liked this place (reading about the unused content found), though it appears that things are a bit too strict in the moderation department for my liking. If I'm willing to correctly my mistakes, and they are approved by the admin at the time, then that decision should stand. On that note, I most likely will not be contributing anything further to the site, as it would not be worth my time in the long run with things being removed by random opinionated admins. I spend enough time hacking the content to put up with someone's tantrum (deletion of content without a worthy replacement) on how I present my findings on the wiki (especially when they are within the bounds of the in-place file limit).

The problem is that 2 MB for a GIF is way huge, and tends to slow browsers to a crawl. I appreciate the being-proactive-about-youtube thing, but in this case it would really fit better as a video compilation.

It was also a technical thing; the GIFs couldn't be thumbnailed (they caused Imagemagick to hang) and since the wiki couldn't do that, kept trying to thumbnail them until the whole server ground to a halt.

There seems to have been a lot of confusion, so I'm sorry about that. Ideally sprite rips would be best (then we could have a cut-down animation that isn't huge), but at the time I guess the only viable option is to videoize it.

Upload the gifs somewhere. I'll convert them to AVI, looped a few times, and upload them to my Youtube account.

Uploading pretty pointless videos is something I'm familiar with.

Well if it would have been noted on the file deletion log that they were deleted for making the server crash, I wouldn't have posted. Knowledge is power... after all . I'll try to get these avi files uploaded somewhere I guess, so that Foxhack can host em (thanks for offering up your youtube account).

About taking screenshots from N64 hardware via GameShark: I got this to work sort of, but am having trouble with a few things...

First, the procedure as I'm doing it:
- Get the official Datel N64 Version 3 Utilities from http://doc.kodewerx.org/tools.html#n64
- Put the GameShark into the N64, put the game in, connect the GS via a parallel port cable to a PC (something with Windows 9x would be best, but at least ROM dumping I've also done under Windows 2000 before)
- Turn on the N64, then - when it's on the GS main menu screen - start the N64 Utils and press the "Detect" button on the first tab
- The program should detect the console and GS cartridge type and version
- Now start the game with the Code Generator turned ON (so I assume this'll require an Expansion Pak no matter the game, and might not work with Expansion Pak-only games?)
- To take screenshots, go to the "Other Utilities" tab in the program and press "Grab Video Image", which'll freeze the game while the program is grabbing the screenshot

Now the two problems I'm having or am unsure about...

1) The whole setup is quite unstable on my end, with the game or the connection freezing periodically. Getting it to work again also takes a stupid amount of unplugging and reinserting of the cartridges and cable.

2) The screenshots' dimensions are slightly... off? Super Mario 64 screenshots end up as IIRC 320x221, while Rouge Squadron's title screen comes out at 1024x221 (with two images side by side), other parts of the intro/demo mode come out at 640x221, while yet others end up as 320x221.

It would be great if someone could double-check that procedure and my results. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong, ex. regarding those image sizes...

A lot of those numbers sound weird. Super Mario 64 should be 320x240. Rogue Squadron changes resolution frequently during the intro sequence, which explains why you're getting different images at different times. Going by the N64 SDK's supported resolutions, I'd expect to see those as 1280x240, 640x240, and 320x240 respectively. (1024x240 should also be possible, but it's not in the SDK so I wouldn't expect to see games using it.)

It'll take me a bit, but I can set up my GameShark and compare. I suspect the weird resolutions are caused by a bug. Just in case it makes a difference, what version is your GameShark's ROM?

Quick correction on SM64's screenshots, they end up as 320x237, I confused the height with that of Rouge Squadron's, which is 221 pixels. So close to what it should be, but still off for some reason...

And my GS' ROM is v3.30 according to the menu.

EDIT: Ended up grabbing 320x237 screenshots of OoT's crash debugger screens and put them on the wiki. They're those damn 3 pixels off, but much better than the 200x156 JPGs from before.
