http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUweG9euKvs&feature=youtu.be

I found this a while ago, but didn't find a tool to convert it until recently. It's an unused version of the video that plays in the watch tower's "Look and See" event.

Unfortunately, that's all I can find for unused things, as I can't find a way to view sprites to check that out.
For old iron village, there doesn't seem to be any .tim files of the backgrounds/village, so that video was the only thing that made it into the final.

I found a file containing what appear to be pieces of the windmill (as seen in the video here) in the Japanese version several years ago. I'll have to see if I can dig it up again.

I tried looking for unused text in the US version, but unfortunately all the text is either compressed or in a non-ASCII encoding.

Really? how did you find that, because there were a lot of area files in the iso that didn't have any .tim files so I am curious about those areas, since I didn't find anything as far as backgrounds went.

I did find out hidden village is in dwarf forest's area, oddly. There's also 2 copies of baccas village's area and the pump at the lake.

Apparently, this video is used, but in a very obscure way.

You have to check the telescope during the "seven friends" event, and you'll see that version instead.

I'm not entirely sure why they have a second one there, I may have to check and see if you can see this version after you race the bandit in watch tower. That would make more sense since IIRC he tells you to check the telescope.

If not, then it's bizarre that it randomly switches to this version.

I dug up my old files again, and I can say with 100% certainty that the tiles I found are from the old Iron Town.

The raw tiles (apologies for the weird palette, these were extracted directly from a file using Tile Molester):

The windmill from the video, and the extracted tiles:

The central tower from the video, and the extracted tiles:

A room that may be the interior of the central tower (both have six sides):

These appear to just be "overlay" graphics (for stuff that Tomba can walk behind); unless a matching background is found, these may be the only remnants of the town left in the game.

I wish I could tell you which file these were located in (or any other useful info for that matter), but unfortunately the individual I was collaborating with on this is no longer a part of this community, and I don't seem to have any saved chat logs.

[EDIT]
Not sure if these are useful at all, but here you go:
List of areas
List of items (lots of unused ITEM entries)
List of events
Item and event icons (definitely some unused stuff here)

Let's see that item list..I can already tell most of what is unused

Rain Essence
Torn Map 1+2
Rubber Gloves
Iron
Iron Wheel
Pipe
Letter
Wood
Shovel
Mighty Fish (Odd, there is "Might Fish Food" in the game though, does the game consider this the fish you pick up with it and it gets automatically used?)
Electric Eel
Black Water
Red, Blue, Green, Black, and Silver Candy
Forbidden Mushroom (There are mysterious, ordinary, and healing mushrooms in the final)
Coconuts
Funga Leather (I guess you would have to make the funga drum?)
Funga Tree
Funga Sap
Unusual Key
Chuckling and Weeping mushroom (Not sure if it's unused, or the coding is weird for those, since these could just be the mushrooms on the ground in mushroom forest)

Grandpa's Bracelet is never in your inventory, unless the game adds it at the end to trigger finishing the Grandpa's Bracelet event after the credits.

If you give me a couple days, I can sort out the event and item icons with what is used and what is unused, since there are already way more event icons than events in the actual game (130, except I forget what the last 3 icons are since they're all post game stuff, I think you can check during the last conversation so I can see 129 of them)

Looking over the area list, I see a few names that are odd:
Pig island
outer walls of pig island
shadow room (This could be a haunted mansion room)

Not sure about these, they may be rooms in the haunted mansion but it's hard to place which ones they are:
Sunny Room (Is this the jewel of fire room?)
Thief's Room One
Swimming Room
Keyhole Room
Hiding Room (This is probably the door on the east side with the hay wall)
Room of Tribulation
Laughing Room (This is the laughing door room)
Civilization Room
Trap Room
Trick Room
Sun Torch Stand

These are all remnants of old village of civilization:
Lumberjack Town
Lumberjack Factory
Dried Wishing Well
Lumberjack Factory
Dried Wishing Well
Stonestown
Clock Tower
Clock Tower
Clock Tower
Clock Tower
Clock Tower
Clock Tower
Iron Town
Iron Castle
Iron Castle
Iron Castle
Iron Castle
Iron Castle
Iron Castle
Iron Castle
Iron Castle
Iron Castle
Iron Castle

All the iron castle and clock tower entries aren't used, clocktower only has 3 rooms in the final, possibly 4 if the variation with the yellow pig door is actually separate or if that's just a spawned object.
Iron castle has 5 rooms in the final.
Oddly enough I can't place what room name would be the room to the left in y crossing in the final with the gogocart and the bosugee and the raft, along with the room in there with the oil pit and charity wing.

For items:I can tell right now, all the unused candy have icons, and there's 15 math beads when only 10 are used, and it looks like all the old village of civilization items do have icons (Wood, iron, iron wheel which is actually a gear).

Event icons:Upper left is grandpa's bracelet, which is normally not seen during the game since you complete it after the credits.

For events:
Miniature Making Trumpets
Wonders of the Black Water
The Rusty Steel Car

These appear to be unused, and considering the list is missing 3 spaces anyway, I'm wondering if these have anything to do with those spots.

Black Water seems to be a scrapped funga forest event, judging from its position in the event list. Might've had something to do with the funga leather/sap/tree items.

Making miniture trumpets is in phoenix mountain, I'm suspecting maybe there was a way to make the large plants that swallow you mini (throwing a pig into them?) but what this would've led to is anyone's guess. I say this because screen 1 has a setup to give you like 4 tries to do this.

Rusty Steel Car is a leftover from old iron village, or it's for the underground. Maybe it was suppose to be different from what it is now on top of how the village of civilization is different.

Has anyone come up with a level code for the JP version of the game? If the level comes up in that area list then it seems like something might remain, especially if the graphics are in the JP version still.

I've tried for awhile now but can't seem to find any value that stores what area you're in. Have had much better luck with other games, this one's a pain :X

I tried many times, but only succeeded in making the game crash.

I wish, especially with "Pig Island" in the list, I'm highly curious about that area since the entire game hypes you up for the hideout island and then you just see yourself flying out of it at the end.

Well, I've probably wasted like three hours here. I can't believe how hard it is to find such a simple value.

Surely there's someone that knows a bit of hacking past cheat finding that can easily locate the needed value?

I'll probably try again later, but this seems hopeless.

Well, I officially give up. Probably went like 8 hours total on this!

Some other PSX expert's gonna have to take this up. Whoever you hopefully turn out to be, you'll be my hero

BTW I don't know how known it is, but there's an early demo of the game on a demo disc you can download on the net called Yoi Ko to Yoi Otona no. PlayStation Taikenban Vol.2. Music is different a bit in instrumentation. According to the game folders there's only AREA00 on the disc, so you can't access anywhere else unfortunately. Still, for Tomba fans it's an interesting glimpse at the game in an earlier form.

Edit: Also should mention the SLPS file on the disc has this in it:

AREA SELECT = %02d SECTION SELECT = %02d

I wonder if it's still accessible..

I have the US and JP versions of the game. I think I have an NTSC demo disc with a playable demo (and other games) of the game (I'm not sure how early it is), and a backup of that Taikenban disc, too. It's good to know that my Tomba hacking was for nothing years ago (not sure if I released everything that I did or didn't finish). I have a level modifier code, though. So give me some time to update and sort the value list.

Oh, and that debug text is what motivated me to hack the game. I never really cheated on it.

If you have a level modifier code, I take it you went through all values and fount nothing then?

I'm sure I know what demo disc you're talking about for the US version, think a lot of us discovered it through there I used to play it all the time, seemed unusually long for a demo. But the original JP version would be the one to check for any unused stuff since you never know what was cut down for the US release.

What do you mean by "I never really cheated on it." ? You didn't figure out how to activate that level select screen I take it?

Looking forward to the code!

At the time, no. My list was far from complete and named differently (my own labeling), from what BMF's list shows.

Tomba was playable on a couple demo discs, so it depends which one you're referring too. I don't think they used the same demo across all discs, even though that is the case most of the time. I'm almost done checking the JP version. There looks to be some unused areas in both. I've been triple-checking to make sure of it.

I meant that I didn't use cheat device codes to skip through the game. The most I remember using was Infinite Health/Lives. And, no, I didn't figure out how to enable the level select (if that is what the text is for). I also didn't find where those button cheats are stored in memory. I never got those to work on the JP version. Do they work?

I should have everything ready for release later. I need to recoup on lost hours of sleep dealing with other matters.

Well, if you want someone to list the what values go where for the level select, I can help relieve you of that =p But either way sounds like you found stuff and we'll be getting it soon enough. Can't wait!

No idea if that area select thing works in the JP version, wish i could say I turned up anything. Sadly the most I found was the RAM value that controls how fast music plays in game. Not exactly that exciting.

A control for music speed..in a game with constant music tracks? That's an odd one, there's never a point in the game where it automatically speeds up/slows down music AFAIK.

Then again the game seems fine with moving during dialogue boxes which is another scenario that doesn't happen either normally, you have to glitch the game by opening the sign saving and start a conversation at the same time to see it (Phoenix mountain's baccas villagers is the only way to see this)

Doesn't seem to be any leftover .tim files for overhead sections or any .str video files in the JP version either, sadly, I went through the .iso this morning with no luck there.

I heard artmoney can rip sprites from sega CD games, maybe someone who knows which artmoney (if there's more than one) it is so we can see if it'll help with PSX sprites?

Do all towns have TIM files on the disc? One program I used only showed one TIM file for the Baccus Village area, while another showed I think seven different ones, but they were all rendered glitched up so I couldn't tell if it was every area or not.

In my impatience I've messed with CDmage trying to replace files seeing if I can access different areas that way, but I just keep getting crashes or screwed up textures.

It will be interesting if any of these unused areas exist with unused text still. I found this thread...

http://forums.x-cult.org/topic/2591-unused-itemsareas-in-tomba-psx/

..and from what I understand, all event text has been found showing no unused ones, so I take it even if the town were on the disc still, it's likely devoid of any interactions.

For the final, yeah it seems like it. Hidden village, pre/post curse dwarf villages, the lake, and baccas (pre/post curse too, oddly since it's the same map duplicated) all have .tim files.

As BMF showed though, it might be stored differently, the .tim file method might've been after they made the old iron castle since he found certain parts of it.

I do hope, even if it is devoid of interaction, we do find the areas listed like pig island, I'm really curious about that one.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
