I checked out that Dengeki Big Bang proto a little better, and I see what you mean now about the door to the final area. I thought they just removed a trigger to open it, but it looks like the game won't let you enter even if it is open. That's a little more complicated. It could still probably be hacked around, but personally, I'm not sure where to start with that.

Thanks a lot! Also thanks to whoever added most of the other stuff I submitted so far that didn't need further investigation.

I noticed whoever updated the Ys III regional differences asked about where the cross was located. It's the second to last level of the game, Ballacetine Castle. Its immediately after the Fire Dog boss.

I have some new NES differences. The first is really easy, the other is a bit convoluted, but I'll do my best to explain it.

Astyanax:

As a common practice among NES titles of the time, the Medusa boss had a bit of breast reduction, instead featuring a scaled chest in the final US version of the game.

JP and US Prototype: US Final:


Dragon Spirit - The New Legend:

The most basic regional difference is the US version slapping a shirt on the main character. The wallpaper and background objects also had slight palette changes

JP: US:

The second difference is a lot more odd.. in both versions, certain NPCs rescued at the end of levels are grey silhouettes instead of full color like the rest of their counterparts. This only seems to happen in Blue Dragon Mode (Normal mode). The Gold Dragon Mode (Easy mode) only lets you meet three of the girls, all of whom are in full color.

The way they are supposed to look:


JP Flower Fairy (Blue Mode):
US Fire Girl (Blue Mode):
Us Pixie (Blue Mode):
US Elf (Blue Mode):

In both versions all the girls are visible during the end credits with no changes between versions.

This is going to sound stupid, but I can't figure out how to rename my thread. xD

Soon I'm going to open a separate thread for the Dengeki Big Bang prototype / final version and Clash comparisons, because there's differences on almost every route. Usually just enemy replacements, but still, it's quite a bit.

The title is fine as it is now, it's the kind of title I'd usually do anyway. xD

I've compiled all of the differences of the Dengeki proto and final differences. Should I show screenshots of EVERY difference, or should I just get the different enemy graphics in much smaller images and designating where the changes are?


Anyway, before I get to that, here's some random stuff. Most are just differences that are already noted on the Wiki, but needed images and the like. Others are things that aren't referenced yet.

Adventures of Bayou Billy / Mad City:

Title Screens: A lot of differences.

US: JP:

Final Bosses: The sprites are different, but then I realized the background is a different color too. Now I have to go check other areas too.

US: JP:


Annabelle: As it already says in the wiki, she's got Daisy Dukes in the english version and a dress in the Japanese. Just providing the screenshots.

Japanese extra endings: In the US version there's only one ending, as it says in the wiki. I only got screenshots for the Japanese normal (I'm assuming its the normal one and not the silly one, I don't know the difference) and the jerk ending where you abandon Annabelle by running away from her at the end.

Samurai Zombie Nation / Abarenbou Tengu: Not directly addressed yet on the Wiki. The Japanese version of Zombie Nation isn't about the flying head of an undead samurai, but instead about a flying Tengu head. He's still on a quest to save zombified America, though.

Title Screen: Standard stuff.

US: JP:


In-game Graphics: Zombie Nation stars the flying head of an ordinary guy, allegedly a Samurai. Abarenbou Tengu features a Tengu (What else would it be?). The first boss in the Japanese version is the living Statue of Liberty, but colored red. The English version instead features her in her standard greenish colors, but with a head full of snakes, giving her a more demonic feel.

Every other boss seemed to be intact, what I have to inspect is the regular levels (I was using the debug screen that allowed you to skip levels and fight the bosses).

Here's some more regional differences. Like last time, a few of these were already addressed on the wiki, but without images:

Contra and Probotector:

Title:

Main Characters:

Side View Infantry: Includes a running type and a shooting type.
US: Eur:

Front View Infantry: Includes a running type and a jumping type.
US: Eur:

Side View Water Commando: Hides underwater or in waterfalls.
US: Eur:

Stage 3 Boss: Color differences in the arms.
US: Eur:

Stage 4 Boss Gunners and Winged divers: The soldiers that protect the actual boss.

Sentry Gunner: Also worth noting, the dynamite sticks that are thrown over the background in this section share the main character's palette, so they become grey along with the main character in Probotector.

Stage 5 Boss Projectiles: The mini disc things that fly out the sides have different palettes. I'm not sure why on this one.

Stage 6 Boss: Made the robotic change in Probotector.

Title: The Japanese version's differences extend even further by having a short cutscene setting up the story for the game, where the player's brother is kidnapped.

Main Character: In the US he's just a random tough guy, in Japan he had Japanese school clothes.

Standard Thugs: Pretty much the same kind of change as the main character.
US: JP:

First Boss: The Japanese version had another thug in a school uniform. The English release changed him to some bandanna thug.

Motorcycle Thugs: Mainly the shirt changed, slight changes to the face.

Second Boss: Probably the biggest change, the US version turned him into a Mad Max-like road warrior.

Girl Thugs: Random women replaced Japanese schoolgirls.

Third Boss: Big changes on the graphics of her dress, but her portrait didn't seem to change aside from the palette.

Final Boss: His suit color was the main change. Like the boss before him, his portrait didn't change aside from the palette.

Background Differences:
Stage 1: In the Japanese Version, it has images of a Sumo wrestler and cigarettes on the boards in the background. It is changed to a man in a hat and a picture of rootbeer for the English release. Also the locale is changed from an outdoor train station to a subway, the palettes made darker as well to reflect the change.
US: JP:

Stage 3: Japanese characters on the board become "Beer" in English.
US: JP:

Ending: The US had virtually no ending to speak of, just "The End" after the credits. The Japanese version shows the brothers being reunited after the final boss is defeated.

I figured it said Beer or something of the like, especially considering the english version went so far as to actually HAVE it say Beer. Usually they'd edit it to something else, like with the cigarettes signs in the first level. Beer = Beer. xDD

Also thanks for the translations Rahan. I really like knowing what the Japanese versions actually say since I don't understand it myself.
