Damnit, someone needs to get the OP on here. He barely seems to know what he's doing on his own, instead taking suggestions from the others on what to do, and providing data logs in case something crashes.

This would be 100% more efficient if we had the ROM.

Not sure what his reasons for not releasing it are...

It is really a shame that you had to wreck the ROM, and then "fix" it with duct tape, instead of releasing it to a group that knew what they were doing.

Wait, what? I understand the concept of using the final version to try to bridge the gaps after such a magnificent show of incompetence in the dumping process, but... why the American version?

If you're restoring the prototype, wouldn't the Japanese version -- that came out a year and six months before the American version -- be a better choice, as it might actually have lingering data in it that the US version doesn't?

To be fair, the current guy isn't the one who wrecked the disk, that was the OP on this thread. He sold it to the current guy as a "corrupted" cart.

Yeah, it's a bit lame that he begged for so much help and then turned around and said he won't release the ROM. But hey, whatcha gonna do?

It's interesting that the capsule monsters were tacked on later, it seems, and that they generally improved a huge amount of the game before final release. Textures all look better, and the music is better, and the sprites are better, and so on. The world map looks better in the final as well, though the way they do caves is still kinda ugly.

Adding in the monster list from the US version is a bit odd. It might be in the proto that the monsters were never implemented at all.

Indeed... I don't think this will ever be on the wiki... just the corruption made lots of things unfalsifiable (is it different because it's old or the corruption?)...

Lack of a ROM is a big factor, too, since we don't currently document protos based solely on screenshots or videos.

(The rule is primarily in place so we don't get a bunch of people slapping blurry GamePro screenshots into articles and going "THE COLORS WERE SLIGHTLY CHANGED BEFORE RELEASE!!!" or "the blob in the corner proves that Rush once had a poop attack"; see The Mechanical Maniacs for some great examples of this.)

I realized it was selfish to keep the ROM for myself. I'm sorry if I offended those who helped me, I didn't mean to. I read the whole thread all over again and now I understand why people were angry. To clarify some things:

- Mr.Tickles said it already: I'm not the one who damaged the proto. It was the previous owner, but let's not blame him either. What's done is done. Mistakes happen. He's probably more sorry than we. What is important is that there is not much damage. Most of the game can be played.

- I said it in the readme of the patch: there are bugs because of corrupt bytes but also because of incomplete data. This is a proto after all. Sometimes I imported data from other versions to make the game more playable. Example: with the imported enemy encounter data you can see the monster sprites (and they are a lot different).

- People were mad becasue I imported missing enemy encounter data from the US ROM. I did this because there is more documents on the US ROM so that was easier to do. But after that I verified: the data is the same in the Japanese and the American. Exactly the same.

- I kept a copy of the original ROM and I wrote a readme for the patch so you can see what I changed and how I changed it. Now that they are released everyone can change the game how they feel so if you don't like my changes (imorted data etc) you can discard them.

- There are still bugs in the ROM. There's a game breaking bug in a dungeon (near Bound Kingdom I think?) so you must use codes or debug to continue. I don't know yet if it's corrupt or incomplete.

It's kind of hard not to blame him when he was told--in no uncertain terms--that he should send it to someone that knows what they're doing. You don't screw around with potentially one-of-a-kind items like this. He ignored their advice, and as expected, disaster struck. He's an idiot. Honestly, I was expecting the prototype to be FAR more damaged than it actually is (as in, vast swaths of data missing). The way you talked about copying in "blocks of data" from the final game made it sound like it was seriously toasted. The damage is actually very similar to that of the Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout prototype, in that only the first one or two bytes at specific addresses are completely or partially zeroed (that one was also fixed by comparing the corrupt areas with the final ROM, most of which were the same). I wonder if the person who dumped that game made a similar mistake?

Anyway, thanks for finally releasing this, and I look forward to seeing the Metroid protos as well. (I suggest you use a different file host next time, though, as DepositFiles is worthless garbage.)
