This is research that is likely to be complicated, but it is not impossible. It would be nice to try if possible, even if the story was long ago.

If I understand correctly, the cartridge is returned to Nintendo, is that right? Nintendo of Europe perhaps? This is where were the prototypes of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

Ah, I see. Otherwise, I'd like to know precisely when it talks about how the Debug Rom (OOT MQ) came to us. There are some things that I did not really understand in this topic, for example an image barred by a red panel (I do not know how to say in English).

The person in the video says (theorizes?) that the debug ROM belonged to someone at Nintendo of Europe, who used it to test the game in order to release the Ocarina of Time: Master Quest edition on the Gamecube. That person gave it to a friend, and the friend waited a year or two before giving it to some other friends, one of whom decided to dump or sell it.

Ah okay, the stories of these prototypes are still rather vague, but it is very logical for safety reasons. It is hoped that other prototypes emerge out of Nintendo of Europe, America or Japan is much more difficult. Also, the person who has a prototype is not egoist to show and to dump the prototype, even if it is an object of value.

A post by LaC on Emutalk, May 6th 2003, also note his next post there some 15 minutes later:

"if its the same rom i have, saving in the first save slot lets you select levels... and putting controllers into other controller ports lets you access a debug mode...."
"Oh it has come to my attention that this is not the same rom i have, oops! ignore anything i said! =)"

Next, if I remember correctly cooliscool got the Debug ROM from someone under the condition to not share it. Two or so years later, I guess after the coast was clear more or less, he did share it with a bunch of ZSO/ZC people (wish I still had the IRC log from that day - I remember being at a small LAN party back then) some time before the public release. The later public release was simply posting the ROM on some sites, almost a bit of a "covert operation", making sure to not attract attention and such.

Said LaC might be the someone cic got the ROM from, and was one of the two coders of the emulator Nemu.

It's been a really long time, tho, so I'm not 100% sure on the whole matter anymore.

Very interesting story, I did not think it could go back in May 2003! Coincidentally, I had the GameCube with The Wind Waker and OOT Master Quest on the same day, it's fun!

It has had 3 years of waiting to discover the prototype in June 2006.

There are a few days ago, I noticed something about a video showing Zelda 64. At one point, Link enters a house and this is the end of the video. Just before the black screen, there is the interior of a house slightly visible for 1 second. Is this the same house as the one where Link enters by the door?

The question I ask myself, because I the impression that the operation of the doors in Zelda 64 is different from Ocarina of Time. Look the doors in the two rooms (Stalfos) in the Debug Rom. These doors are simple textures. Is it enough to touch the door to load a new room without animation?

Here are some screenshots of an old version of Zelda 64. The doors seem to be really textures, but not as objects in Ocarina of Time.





This image shows a normal door (object), it has the function to load the next room of the dungeon, but only those doors there.



It is an assumption, but it is troubling... Otherwise, I hope I have explained it very well despite the translation.

Oh hey, I recognize the room in that last shot. It's the second room (first combat room) in the Tower section of Ganon's Castle. It has the tell-tale baked lighting and orange trim around the bottom of the walls. It's definitely brighter than in the game, though, and certainly more complex.

I always thought that those rooms came from the same development period (probably so did that entire tower, not the entrance), but I don't think its necessarily that same series of rooms. I think it IS from the Hyrule Caslte Dungeon, but its pure speculation. It would reflect nicely on Ganon's castle, though...

Still, I think its too structurally different to be the same room necessarily, but the same development period.

I've been at this so long (eleven years ) I'm pretty sure I could ID development period by texture quality...

I noticed that the older areas tend to have none-dithered textures, where newer areas have severely dithered textures. Compare the cavern walls to the Ganon's tower textures. Cavern's tend to be muddied and unclear at close range, but Ganon's tower is nice and clear up close. They are, pretty much, bright and almost cartoony, where the later tend to use much more realistic colored textures.

It did amuse me that the door texture existed that long

And, on Dark Linkael's point. I've seriously never seen that interior before XD It's blink and you'll miss it. Thanks for pointing it out.

I am sure that the room interior is different to the one you posted, though. The picture is one room, and is much designed like the rooms we have in OoT's final build. The one in the fade is two rooms, divided by a wall, a design never seen in the final. The closest is Impa's House, and its two levels in one room.

The room belonging to Hyrule Castle would actually make sense, as the textures there are essentially whiter versions of the ones in Ganon's Tower. Certainly more detailed, too. Look at those ceiling beams!

I think it is quite nice. Some respects, I wish this is the game we got. The brighter graphics aged better.

Bumping an old topic, but I have no idea where to put this at the moment, and afraid of thread necromancy.

Looking at the OoT Wiki page, seeing the lost Spiritual Stones cutscene. Having no access to the game at the moment (but I have both of my Gakesharks), though watching the video, it leads you to the area? There was also a cut quest, it looks, which involved the Spiritual Stones being clear. This is more speculation, but its an idea.

What if you had to go back and clear each area again to refill them?

Like how the Kokiri Emerald Cutscene teleports you to the Sacred Forest Meadow? Is this what you're talking about? And also: ew... revisiting areas...

At least OoT's areas were pretty enough to revisit, assuming they'd mix it up enough

It and Majora's Mask are two of my favorite games, ever. So yes, I'm heavily obsessed in its unused content.

I was looking at Glitterberri's page for OoT, and one of the scene concepts:

It's a neat scene, most of the character designs are accurate, and its got a nice Kid/Adult mirror to it.

What I'm wondering is what is the fish-faced cat-looking thing on the top that seems to be reflected as a masculine creature at the bottom. Is that a Zora, an early design? It's definitely unique, that's for sure.

It has Kana for a name, too, and a tiny arrow. Its faint, but on the upper-left of the creature. I think the first character says Zo in Katakana, but the rest is too faint. Comparing it to a Kana spelling of the creatures, I think it does name them Zora.

Still an interesting picture, and a lot different from any later designs. Kind of similar to ALttP's finfaced Zora.

To the left of the creature is also a pair of people. I think one definitely looks like Talon, but the other girl, likely Malon, is in an early state of design, too. She's reflected to be much taller, or else I'd think she was an old lady...!

Is probably my favorite scene. A lot of characters are either in early design, or he was experimenting. I really like how Shiek kind of resembles Marik. Adult Link has a far more defined nose and eyes, Navi (I think, could be any fairy, but since its scene art, likely Navi) and Ganon are done in a much more traditional Zelda style, and Zelda is wearing a completely different dress. Link's shield is in a design that reminds me of the A+B pictures, and the Master Sword, which is splitting the scene in two, has a drastically different design.

The Hyrule Castle in the background reminds me of Twilight Princess', too.

Is pretty much final design, I just love how super-deformed Darunia looks XD There's also a group of baddies and bosses in the far lower right, I'm only having trouble remembering one. The bug looking one that the Deku is over.

Alternate Ganon design? He reminds me more of a Dragonball character, but I'd guess that's him. It's in their Flickr with the rest of Ganon's drawings.

Yes, it looks like both Links got a nose job for their final art =P I really do appreciate Zelda's dress in that picture, though.

I still get a heavy Twilight Princess vibe from that picture. I think it reminds me of the first E3 trailer in 2004.

Twilight Princess's items and such are mostly from Ocarina of Time, such as bomb arrows. In essence, it's Ocarina of Time's spiritual successor, so they have similar vibes, at least to me. Interesting though.
