I ate a grasshopper today, after my cat lost interest in playing with the jumpy insect that appeared on my balcony out of a sudden making noise. I inserted the battered insect and its severed leg in boiling water, and ate it, after it had been soaking for a while. It had a similar texture to certain types of grass blades, but no particular taste that I noticed.

In some countries, particularly in southern Mexico and in many parts of Africa, grasshoppers are eaten normally. In most "western" countries, not so.
In the Bible, the grasshopper (or locust) is the only insect that is defined as kosher, i.e. fit for human consumption, so I did not particularly flinch. I generally try to follow a kosher diet in principle, because I believe that God is smarter than we are.

What is the strangest thing you have voluntarily eaten?

Hmm. I've voluntarily eaten various weird things as a child, if that counts. I also mixed tomato soup with macaroni and cheese a couple of weeks ago (it was actually quite good).

EDIT: My father, who spent a good portion of his childhood in Africa, says that next time you should fry it and salt it, because apparently they're a lot better that way.

I don't mind.

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

That actually sounds good Tomato, cheese, and pasta are always good together.

Strangest thing I've had were probably frog legs. Or maybe some kind of fish ovaries which were served alongside other kinds of sushi.

They were okay, probably wouldn't try them again.

Yeah, you probably boiled out all the flavor. Frying would work better.

I've eaten Buffalo but that isn't so strange.

On the other hand, Durian is pretty odd. Smells like rotting flesh, tastes like mild yogurt.

Every so often, when the 17-year cicadas fully mature and just engulf the place, people will actually eat them because there are just so many of them that it's fully possible to catch one easy.

Eww...I don't think you could pay me to eat an insect. That might largely have to do with the fact that I have a phobia of most of them. I spaz when they get too close to me. Just ask Bloodstar.

As far as the strangest thing I've eaten? Well I chewed a few plants when I was a kid for the hell of it. They kinda sucked.

There is already a thread for this.

The strangest thing I've ever eaten is probably something pretty tame, like squid.

I could never eat a grasshopper... I like them too much to do so.

I also would rather have let it go, but it was all “life is pain *twitch*” after my cat had exercised with it for a few moments...

I don't really eat actual weird things but the amount of different things i've put in a sandwich out of boredom is crazy. The weirdest thing was probably mash in a sandwich because that isn't something any ordinary person would put in a sandwich (plus it doesn't have any flavour). Making sandwiches with either crisps or fish fingers are actually quite nice though (in my opinion).

I wonder how many people have tried fish fingers and custard after watching the 11th Doctor.

I did, but I didn't have any jammy dodgers to go with it. :/

Weirdest thing I've ever eaten? Rocky mountain oysters. If you don't know what those are, they're bull testicles. That's not the worst part -- they soaked in sauerkraut and dipped in mayonnaise. It was part of a "fear factor" thing that my band class did one year. It honestly didn't taste too bad, but the sauerkraut was really bitter and the thought of using mayonnaise as anything other than a spread on sandwich bread or the thing that makes chocolate cake moist makes me gag.

Not gonna lie, I actually kinda do want to try that. Preferably while wearing a fez on top of stetson. ...Though yeah, I'd prolly' get some jammy dodgers as well, now that Cteno mentioned those.

It'd be kinda amusing to me, at least.

As for strangest thing I've eaten...

Hmm. Nothing particularly 'out there' comes to mind, honestly. Partly because shitty memory, partly because I don't think there's anything I'd consider exceptionally odd.

Closest I'd say that'd come to breaching it would be like mac and cheese with ketchup but even then that doesn't seem all that strange, so. Shrug.
