Hey guys,

Check this out! It's the remains of the Japanese Text that was used in SM64's Japanese version, in the English ROM.

Interesting. The Japanese text didn't get kicked out the back door, instead, it's wasting space inside the ROM.

What the characters mean is anyone's guess. I'm guessing they are letters.

Interesting. Have they been linked to any lingering resource calls? Is there anything else interesting in the data area where they were found?

Just curious, as weird stuff like this (occasionally) could mean there's something more interesting hidden in there somewhere.

Yes, they are katakana. Translating them is very easy, even for non-japanese speakers (since there are only a limited amount of them).
From the top to the bottom: File, select, (to) copy, Mario, <cannot decipher the second-last blue kana, since I am not used to these square-type letters>?, sound.

I'll just say what BMF was going to, in that finding Japanese characters left over isn't exactly new, suprising, or unexpected. It happens with a *lot* of games.

I don't think they had time to get rid of the Japanese characters, they were hurrying to complete the game. That's also why they left the Yoshi egg textures in the ROM.
As for why they're there, I have no clue.

That blue symbol looks like punctuation. It's not as tall as the others.

My best guess is:
ファイルセレクトをコピーするけマリオスア。、どの？サウンド

These look like all the characters necessary for the main file select screen, in the order they would most likely have been added.
