So... I've been using this neat tool that I found online.

You can set the words per minute and in how many chunks of words.
I used it to quickly understand and review ~60,000 words of exam prep within an hour. It practically eliminates "lazy reading"...

I manage to understand 1300 wpm in 2 word chunks, but at slower speeds I can get 4 at a time. For complex-pseudo-Aquinas sentences it won't give comprehension, but even then it's great for review.

Personally, I find this really restraining and disrruptive.

It might be useful for some people, but not for me. I need to be physically staring at the immediate context (both what I just read and what am I going to) and to have if flow along my own speed.

Or in other words: oh god my eyes

I can read like this using this tool, but... It's not comfortable. I can read quickly without this sort of thing, but normally I want more time to take in the words, reflect on what I've read.

Yeah, this kind of reminds me of what Björk said about TV that one time except with words. It'd be kinda cool if it slows a little at the end of sentences so you can take in the words. I kinda have trouble figuring out where paragraphs begin/end.

Indeed, this is pretty painful. I'd much prefer to choose my own speed of word intake, and I also like having a feel for when sentences/paragraphs end... And it DOES seem like it should be flashing WAR IS PEACE.

I visualize a lot when I read--It's my reading style. Spreeder frees me from the physical restraint of having to search for the word / turn pages and allows me to fully concentrate on the word itself. Instead of the frequent intermittent clips playing in my mind during visualization, I see a full movie...if that makes any sense.

Considering that I managed to successfully study what took others 20-25 hours in under 5 hours, this was a very good tool from my own standpoint.

The difficulty I have with this tool is that it breaks up useful formatting. For example, section titles in a research paper will show up as regular text, and because they frequently eschew punctuation, it takes a nonzero amount of mental energy to detect the end of the title and the beginning of the text. I ended up grabbing one section at a time because of this issue, but this interrupts the flow of the reading with the manual copy/paste task. Furthermore, paragraph breaks are an important tool for parsing long streams of content; the end of a paragraph marks the end of one idea, so you can pack up your understanding of that idea and prepare yourself for the next one. This tool forces you to accomplish this in the same time as between any two words being read, which is uncomfortable.

Also, the time it takes for your eyes to scan the words varies with the word length, which results in a wildly jagged reading pace. Increasing the chunk size helps out a bit with this, because on average long words are usually adjacent to short words, but it makes the edge cases (when several consecutive words have similar lengths) stand out even more. An option to read by approximate character count instead of by word number would alleviate this problem significantly.

I used to use this when my readings for class were accessible online, and I felt it did increase the speed at which I could absorb content. The added stress caused by the two issues I've mentioned was not worth it to me, and I wouldn't use it in the future.

I can keep up with the pace it gives me, and understand what I read.

But I feel horribly confused as to what is going on, and not being able to read a sentence more than once or actually dwell a little on stuff or analyze it feels horribly de-powering for me.

This seems like, based on a lot of people's complaints, that it could use a lot of tweaking. Maybe having stuff like variable delay based on word size and maybe an option to press a button at the end of each sentence or paragraph to continue (if it already has these, perhaps yous can consider trying them to see if it helps.). For reading bullshit for a class you don't care about and maybe gleaning ideas of events and whatnot can be fine with this if you just want to get it out of the way, it'd be better if it was a bit more forgiving for things where you actually interested in what you're reading. I also imagine this could be problematic for stuff like names and dates, which could take a good bit of time to parse and memorize, unless you're one of those freaks who are just all about names and dates (and usually little else.).

Basically, it needs a lot of refinement and adaptability for different users that, based on what's been said here, it seems to lack. I personally haven't used it... I used something like it (might have been the same thing) a while ago just to experiment with it.
