| It seems fairly well known at this point, but GB oddity Ultraman Ball apparently was not always a licensed game. Originally an entry in AIM's ill-fated Armadillo series, it was one of several games canned when publisher IGS vanished off the face of the earth sometime in '93. Unlike IGS's other prospective FC/GB titles that got the axe, it was somehow picked up by Human-Bandai collaborative studio BEC and released as an Ultraman game. How this wound up being handed off to BEC or why it was one of the only late IGS-published games to escape the chopping block is a mystery, but that aside, it doesn't seem like it was a very thorough edit. There's only one screenshot of its original form as Armadillo Gaiden to go off of, but the menu and environment art all look pretty similar in Ultraman Ball so it seems like only the character sprites got changed. I'd really like to see if there's any remnants of the earlier game; is anyone here up for investigating this, since I have no idea how it's done? There's a pretty good chance of unused art being hidden away in there. Anything that doesn't look Ultraman-y is suspect, but for reference here's some sprites of the main character from the first Armadillo game that would have been replaced with Ultraman. |
