It seems fairly well known at this point, but GB oddity Ultraman Ball apparently was not always a licensed game. Originally an entry in AIM's ill-fated Armadillo series, it was one of several games canned when publisher IGS vanished off the face of the earth sometime in '93. Unlike IGS's other prospective FC/GB titles that got the axe, it was somehow picked up by Human-Bandai collaborative studio BEC and released as an Ultraman game.

How this wound up being handed off to BEC or why it was one of the only late IGS-published games to escape the chopping block is a mystery, but that aside, it doesn't seem like it was a very thorough edit. There's only one screenshot of its original form as Armadillo Gaiden to go off of, but the menu and environment art all look pretty similar in Ultraman Ball so it seems like only the character sprites got changed.

I'd really like to see if there's any remnants of the earlier game; is anyone here up for investigating this, since I have no idea how it's done? There's a pretty good chance of unused art being hidden away in there. Anything that doesn't look Ultraman-y is suspect, but for reference here's some sprites of the main character from the first Armadillo game that would have been replaced with Ultraman.

okay so, nobody's interested, and my post sounds like a highly-specific spambot, i guess.

could anyone give some explanation of how i could sift through sprite data to look for unused objects myself, then? like, say, this example from the wiki's atlantis no nazo page.

i'd really like to take a look at this game and a few others that i've got a strong suspicion have some leftover/unused stuff. if anyone can give me even a little help on this i'd really appreciate it. :\

EDIT: hah hah whoops never noticed the wiki's guide section. nevermind i am dumb

Well, the first thing I'd suggest doing is to open the rom in a image-editor that supports GB formating.

here is a YYCHR dump of the file; doesn't seem like there is anything interesting left =/

thanks for putting that up. i've been messing around in yy-chr; i don't know why i just assumed this would be any more complicated than loading the rom into a viewing utility. :|

but yeah, there's really nothing left in there, it's pretty depressing. i was really hoping for some trace of the original game. looking at the armadillo giaden flyer, it looks like there's no mention of the super game boy - i wonder if support was added to ultraman ball, and that meant they had to scavenge every spare bit of space? the sgb border materials are kind of broken up, although i guess that might jsut be how it goes.

i was also hoping there might be some old material in ninja gaiden shadow left over from when it was a kage/shadow of the ninja title, but all the sprites are broken up in ways that make it impossible to see much of anything. even while watching what sprites are active in bgb's vram viewer it's hard to follow. unfortunately, a lot of natsume's stuff seems to be structured like that.

oh well. at least i learned enough to poke around in roms, and luckily enough my final bet for games with unused art seriously paid of: there is a metric ton of stuff buried in robocco wars.

You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
