... I've been playing this a bit more often lately. I also open crates (sometimes; I have about $100-in-keys worth of crates needing opened...).

Other than some really dumb items lately, I haven't really found it any harder to have a good game. The biggest issues are when teams are horribly unbalanced, but what can you do then anyway? :/

I've been playing more Pyro and Engie recently.

Pyro is really good for pushing back enemies and extiguishing teammates, something that most Pyros don't bother doing due to having the god damn Phlogistinator. I hate that weapon with a passion. So overpowered and I'm not just saying that. Something that fully restores your health and makes you near invincible for a few seconds afterwards then granting you full-on crits is a completely broken weapon. Still, Degreaser/Reserve Shooter/Axetiguisher is a good combo to take out most classes.

Engie on the other hand I play aggressively with the Gunslinger. Constantly putting Mini-Sentries all over the place keeps fueling my Frontier Justice with crits which devastate and a pistol is always good since I never run out of ammo for that. Quite fun.

Also the Fruit Shooter (hat for Sniper that is an apple with an arrow in it) has a hidden class set when combined with the Huntsman.

I wish the Pan was available to Engie.

Just so we can hear them build a Sentry from a distance.

What? The Phologistinator is awful piece of trash, like the Backburner before they gave it an overpriced Airblast. The airblast is such a huge tool in the Pyro's arsenal. The taunt ability barely makes up for the fact that you're now hard-countered by Soldiers, Scouts and non-melee Demomen.

And the amount of Pyros I've seen backstabbed during that taunt is hilarious.

Also, no Demopan for the spy? Bah! I wanted to panstab someone.

I agree that it's OP, even playing as a Pyro... Though I still use the backburner for the crits.


Airblasting isn't as useful as you'd think with many soldiers using the damn Liberty Launcher and Direct Hit. It makes it nearly impossible to airblast if you're not predicting when they'll fire, and it only gets worse with latency...

Airblasting friends on fire is how it is more useful.

I just hate the few moments of Dead Ringer damage the Pyro takes while he has crits everywhere. It was worse when it was released. Even a backstab in the taunt was impossible.

Honestly, I can't see a single upside to the Phlog compared to the Vanilla Flamethrower, even.

I also don't see many Liberty Launchers or Direct Hits, either. But I've seen enough people get reflects on them with a degree of reliability. Must be the low-latency Australian servers that I play on (which are all run by our ISPs)

I've never seen anyone use the Manmelter to extinguish players. They just lob it at a narrow corridor like a faster Flare Gun, especially when paired with the Phlog. Why bother extinguishing teammates when you can be in the middle of the action and cause fire damage to restore your health?

Also the upside to the Phlog compared to the Flamethrower is that W+M1 in a tight area can get you lots of fire damage, which results in you being able to tank damage. When you taunt, you get a huge defense buff (the same buff used when you use a Dead Ringer and take damage as you are cloaked), full health regenerated, and crits for 8 seconds. Combine this with a Medic that Ubers and you have a crit-boosted invincible Pyro running at your team. Even without the Medic, there is about two seconds after the taunt where you can't kill the Pyro with basic attacks. You have to stack on the damage immediately or else.

EDIT: I've still not used anything for both the Pyro and the Engie from the Christmas update except for the Third Degree, and even then I'd rather use Axtinguisher or something else.

Oh, I'm well aware of the mechanics of the Phlog - I just don't think that they're compensatory for the downside of having no airblast, which is such a multifunctional and necessary tool for the Pyro. I've seen a Phlog taunt pyro be successful the entirety of once.

Most of the Christmas stuff was trash, anyhow. Well, except the Spycicle which is basically a Knife upgrade.

I love the spycicle. I got it, equipped it, and then stopped playing TF2 for half a year.

Then I started again and released I had it. Still awesome.

Spycicle is good

if you don't use the Dead Ringer and Enforcer with it.

Seriously fucking stupid that Valve made a weapon that changes cloak timing but made it not affect the Dead Ringer in any way, therefore being a direct upgrade to a Revolver in this case. Combined with the Spycicle, you never have to worry about dying easily.

The Spysicle + Dead Ringer is literally my worst nightmare. It absolutely ruins the hard counter of Pyro and combined with the other shit it pulls... blugh.

Silent Killer: No attack noise from backstabs
On Hit by Fire: Become fireproof for 2 seconds

Melts in fire, regenerates after 15 seconds

The only knife that should ever hide killfeed messages is Your Eternal Reward, period. Why they suddenly have this fad of making the Spy even more OP is beyond me but ghghhghghgh.



(E: I want to mention that I also loathe the rockets with higher speed. why)

The Direct Hit is acceptable due to the fact it has to hit you to even hurt, removing one of the benefits of the default Rocket Launcher. I don't like the Liberty Launcher due to 3 rockets instead of 4 and everyone that thinks they know how to play Soldier uses it just for the speed increase (just like Spy players use the Enforcer or Backburner due to the damage boost and nothing more).

I quite like The Direct Hit personally, it makes it possibly to deal some great damage from far away against sentries, and also against slow players such as heavies.

Not good enough at aiming to use it as a general purpose launcher though.

Eh, Spy is the only class in the game that is countered by basic awareness. Not saying I don't get stabbed, but it's usually my own fault for not being paranoid enough.

Still, the Dead Ringer is annoying as crap. Doesn't make bad spies good/useful but does make them annoying. Enforcer bothers me though, because it is essentially an upgrade for something that didn't need an upgrade (Revolver) and obsoletes something that while strictly better requires inhuman amounts of skill to use properly (Ambassador).

Not necessarily. Your Eternal Reward basically removes a lot of what makes Spies obvious. As soon as they get a kill, they're disguised, and there's no killfeed notice or death noises.

So it's actually pretty difficult, there.

Disguising as a friendly Heavy to draw attention to yourself at the start of a round (which is ideal for any Dead Ringer Spy) helps a lot as when the other team's Sniper or Spy kills you and activates your Dead Ringer, it shows the Heavy player as dying, not you as a Spy. Makes it less obvious that way too.

It shouldn't be used as a crutch from not dying, like many horrible Spy players do.
