Small discovery, this screenshot contains 2 beta paratroopas without the skull like heads in battle, but mario has a spell that requires 2 flower points. It could be the jump spell which requires 3 flower points in the final version.

I have some discoveries as well. I've had a text document of everything I found over the years, but I never bothered to format it to be presentable. Most of it is already known, but they just haven't been put on the wiki yet. I'll definitely share more as I find them.

Yes, by the looks of it, it is a Pokeball. Don Que Hooty pointed out that Pokemon Red and Green came out around SMRPG's release, so that can sort of help explain why it's there.

Mattrizzle debunked it. It's for when Geno uses an item.

- There is evidence that a fourth item could be equipped at some point. Probably removed to simplify things (or to leave room for descriptions?)
Well it turns out I made this up. In the emulator save state, there is an unused memory byte that can be found right under accessories. I wanted to believe it was another equip slot, but this isn't true. I tested it by putting in the cheat 7FF80Fxx (it's the address for the unused byte) to see if Mario's stats were altered. Turns out nothing happened to his stats. (For reference, 7FF80Exx changes Mario's accessory, 7FF80Dxx changes armor, 7FF80Cxx changes weapon. The unused byte is down the line. You can see the full list in "doc_zst" in Giangurgolo's docs)

Unused Palettes
- Strangely enough, there are unused red and blue palettes for the hammer. Elemental hammers? Of course there is no evidence for this, it's only a theory.


- I don't remember exactly, but were there steel cymbals in this game? Regardless, I'll post it just in case.

(I think this palette is used in The Bob-omb Mafia...)

- In an old preview video, Geno has a really washed out palette compared to everything else in the video. Palette 507 looks like it resembles that old palette. Check it out:

I am convinced this is Geno's palette because the palettes of Mario, Mallow, Peach, and Bowser are all right around 507
I guess palette 507 is the unused palette for scarecrow Geno. Thanks Mattrizzle.

- Palette 39 for Levels appears to go with the mine theme, but Lazy Shell lists it as unused.

Other beta stuff I noticed from old videos/screen shots (I posted these on the wiki but quickly realized that wasn't what the wiki was for ):
- In the V-Jump special, the Yoshis are a bit fatter than usual.
- Here is an old test battlefield and beta Bowser's Keep from the V-Jump video that I edited to remove the monsters. I couldn't remove all of Kamek in the second image through, sorry about that.


- Geno had a different animation for Geno Whirl. From what it looked like in the screen shot, I assumed that when Geno swung out his arm, a blue streak would be drawn onto the enemy, then they would take damage. Whether this was one or more enemies being hit is unknown. Here is what I posted on the wiki:

(The caption says "The Geno Whirl Special Attack works particularly well against undead enemies.")
This screen shot came from Nintendo Power volume 82. What is interesting is it says the special is good against undead enemies, but this bonus is shown nowhere in the battle scripts. I guess it went with the idea that Geno is a divine entity from the Star Road, and that the undead in Final Fantasy games are usually weak to Holy. Probably scrapped because that kind of association doesn't really seem fit in the Mario universe.

Beta Geno Flash

This is an early look at Geno's Geno Flash special. The first thing you'll probably notice is the eyes. The eyes are different from the final version. Geno doesn't move to back of the arena as shown in the picture, he's in his regular spot. The cannon sprite got touched up in the final version as well.

Beta Poison Gas

This is an early picture of Bowser's Poison Gas special. What it shows is that instead of one poison cloud poisoning enemies, there are several clouds floating by. The screen also gets a dim light green effect.


Has anyone checked Giangurgolo's documents? 'doc_offsets' lists a bunch of things that might want to be looked into. It looks like he found a lot of places where unused graphics are held, among other things.

It isn't just the palette. All of Geno's sprites look slightly different in that video (look at the shading near the tip of his hat, and the shape of the cape).

Anyway, the palette looks like it's intended for the scarecrow version of him. The initial palette of the scarecrow is 503, which is Mario's in that set. My guess is that they never bothered updating these palettes because they aren't used--being transformed into a scarecrow doesn't change the character's palette.

The effect used when the Axem Rangers teleport has palettes for all five Axem Rangers, but you only see the red version in game:

It's from the nintendo magazine sysfrom the uk, it has a background of the beta yo ster isle on the cover which means there is beta info in that magazine. I wish people has a copy on it right now...

Those are some really nice discoveries, though we can't really do anything with the magazine scans unless we can find some remnant of them in the game.

I always found it odd that the Axems all used a red flash. Too bad those weren't used!

I found that Giangurgolo has a bunch of SMRPG documents on his website, but they seem to be mostly technical and such. I didn't see anything about unused sprites, on the site or otherwise.

In the meantime, I have some magazine articles I'd like to contribute. Whether all of them have beta material or not, I think these might help you all in your digging in someway.

Here are some European magazine scans of old Nintendo articles circa 1995, that I found a while ago on the internet and forgot about it. These scans are articles of the then-upcoming Nintendo Ultra 64 and Super Mario RPG.

This scans feature an interview with Yasuhiro Minagawa and Yoshio Hongo of the General Affairs Department (Public Relations, I think.) about plans for the Ultra 64 (and Nintendo's decision about it using carts over CDs), SquareSoft's plans of the time and Super Mario RPG, and even some tiny mentions of Mother 3 and Star Fox 2 on the Super Famicom (SNES)! These are two scans of Maximum. Issue 2, Page 107 & 108.



Quote of Interest about SMRPG from that interview:
"There have been calls from all ages and from young girls, for another character to which they could become attached. Mario was the best, but had not been in and RPG. Nintendo’s director Mr. Miyamoto also wanted to do an RPG using Mario. There happened to be a chance for both companies to talk which went well. Nintendo wanted to do a Mario RPG and Square had the programming ability, so Mario could become a popular RPG character anywhere in the world."

Next I have are from the October 1995, 36th Issue of Super Play, a British Nintendo magazine that ran from the early-to-mid 1990s. These pages contain samples of areas not found in the final game, screen-shots of vastly different content in the game, and a wire-frame diagram of the original (BUTT UGLY) 3D Mario model.
