Yeah, I mean look at the thing. You can see where a label was torn off. The holes exposing the chips look like they were cut with pliers. It's held together with scotch tape. Someone just tore open a cart, cut holes in it, peeled the label off (which would have been in the way anyway), and replaced the ROMs with something rewritable, most likely for homebrew development.

I doubt this photo was even meant to fool anyone. This article just used a photo of someone's homebrew dev cart and called it a prototype.

Not really saying this is real or not, but it's fairly possible that they only had an NES to use, so just hacked something together to get it to fit in their NES. Taking a picture of the bare board would have been more useful, if that is the case. I'm not holding my breath, though. However, since they seem to have it dumped, but aren't releasing the ROM itself, they're just looking for attention so they can, of course, announce their joke. However, since this has been pointed out, they'll likely just go completely silent forever and we'll never know or not, because they're dicks.

So apparently it's an actual prototype thing and it's Mario is Missing. So at least I had that right.

It's also apparently the same as the final (the joke being that Mario is Missing itself is unplayable).

Oh well. I haven't chewed on my feet enough lately, apparently.

Clearly you've never seen some of the actual NES prototypes that have been found over the years. Pretty much all of them look like crappy homebrew carts.

I'll be honest when I say feel bad for the guy each time he buys a prototype only for it to be basically the same as the final game. However, I can't quite justify hyping something that turns out to be nothing that special in the end. It's just a recipe for disappointment.

I don't think they looked this crude? More like carts that were made with holes and no labels from the beginning...

Pre-cut prototype cartridge shells were virtually nonexistent in the NES days. Most everyone either used a generic empty shell or recycled one from an existing game. There were prototype PCBs (which this game does in fact use), but even then many developers simply hacked up ordinary production boards.

Some good examples:

Alien 3
Captain Planet
Baby Boomer
Deathbots

So, on the 1st of April the "prototype" has been revealed: a Mario is Missing proto, which is the same as the final...

It was, however, real. The guy came onto Lost Levels and kind of spoiled it, but the point was that he was the fool this year (for spending so much money on it).

(And also the fact that Mario is Missing is "unplayable" normally)

It's real, but it isn't any less depressing how the guy has several prototypes which turn out to be the same as the final version. It was also a letdown and a somewhat predictable one at that given the guy's past history.

Seems to be more mere ignorance that they don't know they have a prototype cart. I mean, what, California Raisins was turned into a used games store, which is how we got ahold of it?

Om nom foot.

If the ROM is identical to the final version, how do we know it's a proto at all, and not just something someone threw together to fool people into buying it?

That's a risk one takes when buying prototypes, unfortunately.

They should refund the money in these cases, though, since that's clearly not what the buyer wanted...

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
