On that note, the Classic Mode in Jetpac Refuelled on XBLA is not the original Spectrum code, it's recoded based from the Modern Mode codebase, using a shader to imitate the Speccy's "color clash" effect. THE MORE YOU KNOW

Didn't someone mention some of the PC-98 Touhou games having unused music? I forget which thread that was in, though.

(The music is the only part of the series I'm even remotely familar with anyway, but it would be nice to see it represented on the wiki, I guess )

It's not present in Lotus Land Story. The file that contains all of the music sequences (幻想郷ED.DAT) doesn't have any sequences other than the 46 used in the game.

At least some data for Demitri's second normal throw (the bite grab) exists in the first Darkstalkers game despite it not actually being a usable move until the third game in the series. The sprites and animation data exist, but I'm having a hard time finding if the code related to the throw exists or not because the coding related to throws in general is a headache.

Also, here's a photo I came across during a web search of the attract sequence of the location test version of the second Dakstalkers game. Morrigan's in her normal color scheme instead of the blonde alternate palette like she is in the finished game.

If I recall correctly, the bite grab sprites were also used in Midnight Pleasure from NW, right?

And I've seen that location test image before too...you can actually make it come up in the Saturn version by setting the color scheme back to the original game interestingly enough.

Well, I'm not TOO familiar with the PC-98 Touhou games. However, I have got Touhou 6-8, Touhou SWR, Touhou UNL and Touhou Sky Arena. I also have planned to get most of the other Touhou games as well.

The biting itself was used in Midnight Pleasure, but the wiping mouth+tossing part was never used anywhere. Interestingly, when he actually got a second normal throw in VS, they redrew that part rather than reusing this one.

Seeing Beetle Adventure Racing on the recent changes list, after that debug mode code was hacked out, has no one ever documented (or even found?) the D-Up/Down debug menu system? The one that's labeled "NEED FOR SPEED"?





I don't know much about it either, but 80025E7F 0001 (US) is all that's needed to enable it, while one of the other codes controls the "FRAME DISP" setting from the second screenshot.

EDIT: Started adding this to the Wiki page, also could use some help because of the sheer amount of options in this thing ^^"

That looks just like the model they used for the CD version of Mario Teaches Typing.

Maybe that demo and the mentioned game used the same technology?

So I was browsing the Katawa Shoujo forums and came upon these:


There was a scene where Hanako was heavily medicated. During the course of the scene she asked HIsao to take advantage of her, which he did. This, of course, was a bad end.

I'm not entirely sure why it was in there. Originally there weren't many H-scenes in the Hanako path (IIRC none in the "Good" path), and so there was a bit of pressure to put more into the story. This was just one place that fit with the narrative, although once I posted it the other devs (wisely) pointed out that it was akin to rape.

So yes, there was the equivalent of a date-rape scene in the original draft, but it was included more to boost the H-scene count rather than any desire to satisfy the sickos that want to see rape in their porn.

Yep. IIRC, the only relic left of this is the music box, which plays what was going to be her favorite tune to play on the cello.


Pretty interesting stuff. One of the games creator's said that there were hundreds of ideas that ended up getting scrapped.

I'm sure this classifies as weird.

So I've been digging into the PS2 NeoGeo anthologies a bit. The US versions of the Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury ones still have some leftover graphics from the Japanese versions, mostly company names and logos related to the netplay (which was removed for the US / PAL versions). They're never loaded, so they count as material I guess. I can't figure out how to work those PS2 graphics viewers but I did see the graphics, just garbled.

Earlier today while playing Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 1 on my PS2 (to look stuff up for the Wiki) I noticed that it was missing some songs in the music test, the attract mode songs that actually say "Fatal Fury" instead of "Garou Densetsu". They play fine in the game, so why aren't they in the sound test?

I got curious and ah, acquired ISO images of the Japanese versions to look them up. This led me to downloading audio extraction and player tools and found something weird in Garou Densetsu Battle Archives 1. The games are compressed in archives, and each game is made up of five different files - XXX.CTX, XXX.NGF, XXX.NGT, XXX.NGX, and XXXPRG.BIN, plus XXXR.NGX.

The NGX files contain the music, sound effects, and something I can't figure out. Also, the XXXR.NGX archives are basically the same as the XXX.NGX archives except they contain the arranged music instead of the original music.

But there's a ninth NGX file, 1003.NGX. That archive only contains two files, BGM and SE. The BGM contains all the music from the four games. Both arranged and original versions, 192 songs in total. The sound test only lists 96 songs, so 96 x 2 = 192.

This leads me to believe that the sound test uses 1003.ngx to play the music in the sound test, but the devs never bothered to fix the missing English versions in the file, so they won't play in the game itself. I'd do some tests but it's been absurdly hot lately and my computer's overheating.

I should be finishing that other project of mine but dammit, this got me curious!

Edit:
Samurai Spirits Rokuban Shoubu / Samurai Shodown Anthology uses a different format, it stores all the music data on one file. Odd music tracks are original, even are arrange ones. Neat.

So, did anybody with Lazy Shell notice that the collision map for Mushroom Kingdom outside (rooms 190, 191) has a lot more to it than what you can explore? Three house entrances and another castle entrance exist outside the boundaries of the room, separated only by a single square of space. The best part? The layout's different from even the early version from the early scans!

Edit: Oh yeah, this is SMRPG I'm talking about.

The only intermediate design of the Mushroom Kingdom's exterior I know of that is featured in any publications is this one, mistakenly included in Nintendo's Player's Guide. A portion of this can also be seen in Nintendo Power Volume 77. It isn't very different from the final map, though. The path from Mushroom Way points northwest instead of southwest, and there are crates and a bit more land behind the Item Shop.
