I posted ages ago about unused stuff in Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, and I'm still having trouble with it, so I'm officially asking for help. I have no prior experience with DS hacking and I'm pretty much stabbing blindly in the dark. Every month or two I try to check it out again, get frustrated, and give up. Here's what I know/have done so far:

There's a bunch of used stuff in /data/2d/btl and /data/2d/hk. Each "image" consists of a palette (.nclr_), tile map (.ncgr_) and animation (.ncer_) (I _think_ that's what they are). It seems to be in some kind of non-standard format, or it in some way doesn't play nicely with current tools. For one, each individual file seems to be compressed. Tahaxan/Tihaxa (whatever it's called) seems to decompress them on the fly, but it can't read the .ncer files. I can view the .ncgr files, but I have to play around with the dimensions and change all of the palettes to palette 12 in Tihaxa. I then right clicked and saved them as .pngs. Here's the images from /data/2d/btl :

The pictures seem very incomplete, and though there's 15 of them in the folder, they seem to be these 5 images repeated in random order. There's a few more files in there, but I can't tell what they are or if they're used until I can open them properly. I'm pretty sure opening the .ncer files is the key.

I tried Tinke today, and it decompresses the rom and opens the files, but it gives me an "out of memory" error when I open the .ncer. Console tool opens the palettes and .ncgrs, but doesn't show the whole .ncgr, and when I try to load the .ncer the whole image disappears. I can't figure anything out in crystaltile. This is driving me nuts; I feel like there must be something really simple I'm missing. Can someone else try opening up this game and seeing what they can find?

If it helps, you can always ask the author of Console Tool to check the files and see if anything strange is going on that makes them unsupported. He is always updating the program if he finds something unaccounted for. I know he keeps an active thread over at romhacking dot net, so you could ask there if it comes down to it...

It sounds like a mashup of the sheep and Blue Monday and The Perfect Kiss. Holy crap. It's in the strings.

I'm pretty sure this is worth mentioning. In the PlayStation 3 game Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2, two textures for one of Uni's weapons (which I don't know the name of at the moment, I can't check myself since my PS3's broken) were changed between the US and Japanese versions of the game, to remove the rather-obvious PSP and XBox 360 references.

I vaguely recall Bouche finding files in the ROM named after Speccy games many MANY years ago, and one of the Goldeneye staff (Martin Hollis I think?) apparently has a habit of writing 8-bit micro emulators in his spare time.

Zoinkitty's done some pretty hardcore Goldeneye hacking in the past, like restoring Citadel, and Rare did (and still do) have a bit of a hardon for their past as Ultimate... I'm pretty sure this isn't fake, but the patch is right there so I guess give it a poke around?

Mr. Steve Ellis has admitted responsibility with this, and has sent an email to Zoinkitty explaining how his homebrew Spectrum Monitor ROM (spec_rom.seg.rz) worked.

Zoinkitty's patch replaces Steve's monitor with the official Amstrad one, since the copyright has since been lifted.

So... it's legit. And awesome.
