I recently watched a movie, Revelations of the Pyramids. It pointed out some very interesting things about the designs of ancient pyramids and other such creations:
They appear all over the world - and most lie on a straight line at a 30° angle from the equator.
They're built with precision that would be extremely difficult even with modern technology. Blocks fit together so well a razor blade can't fit between them; grooves so perfectly straight a laser can shine along them - carved into gigantic blocks of some of the hardest materials that would have existed at the time. Many carvings are made in granite - one of the few materials that would preserve them over thousands of years.
They're carved into rather odd shapes, that appear to be designed to distribute weight and force to allow the structures to survive earthquakes.
They're aligned and shaped perfectly such that they indicate the equinoxes in various ways. For example, some pyramids are aligned such that during the equinox, exactly half of a face appears bright and half appears dark.
They're also aligned to constellations; the sphinx, for example, would have once pointed precisely at a point in the sky that even today is used as a reference point for mapping out the universe. Since the Earth's axis gradually wobbles, it doesn't point there anymore, but will once every ~20,000 years.
People assume these creations are a few thousand years old, but there's very little way to tell precisely - they could be much older. There's no way to tell for example when a rock was carved, only roughly how old the rock is.
Monuments on Easter Island are inscribed with writings still not deciphered. Easter Island is another of the sites lying on the 30° line, and is considered to be the most isolated place in the world.
Most interesting of all: the dimensions of the pyramids, inside and out, frequently encode such interesting numbers as pi, phi (the golden ratio, another mathematically interesting number), and even the speed of light. Some of these are ratios (this measurement is exactly phi times this one, precise to 1mm), and some seem to be in metres. The movie shows how the metre is derived from measurements of the Earth, and the positions of these sites suggest the builders of these sites may well have made similar measurements and came up with a similar measurement system. Some carvings are also perfectly symmetrical, and their curves all lie on the same perfect circle - something that would be extremely difficult to do even with modern technology.
It's all a bit difficult to believe, but they put these pieces together pretty convincingly, and then go on to draw a fascinating, somewhat scary conclusion:
This is already a fascinating idea to me, but the movie then goes on to suggest that
I'm not sure I agree with the conclusion, but the facts they point out are amazing themselves... anyone else think there could have been an advanced civilization on Earth millenia ago?

Nah. I know about similarly tall structures made by the ancient people of the Southwest. They also are aligned with the stars. Some even still function today, marking what season it is by capturing sunlight through cracks in rocks and displaying them on specially painted walls.
They just had a lot more free time on their hands, and societies which more easily could compel vast numbers of people to work on mindbogglingly huge projects. They lived in a world where the night sky was always fully visible and where no books existed. With so little to do in their free time, it is clear they focused on making such huge pyramids and other structures in order to make purpose of their lives.

True, they had a lot of free time, but the precision with which these things are built, and the knowledge of things like how to make them to withstand earthquakes is pretty mind-boggling coming from a civilization with no technology... I find that harder to believe than a lot of the things the movie points out.
What's hard to believe? They took the most solid materials they had, and used them, and turns out their decisions were long lasting. They're such huge structures as well, that withstanding earthquakes is likely the least hard thing for them to do.
The only potential abnormality I see is how some of their things are so well balanced, in terms of symmetry. But back then, they could have been way more capable of telling from sight and potentially touch when something was balanced or not.

If you have about 100,000 workers, there's a lot you can accomplish. You don't need advanced technology do such precise calculations, just a lot of planning time.

There's the issue.
Civilizations always had technology. Several had bits and pieces of "modern" tech long before the nations which still exist today had them.
The native Puebloans knew astronomy long before Europeans ever did. The Egyptians had been around hundreds of years before their really sophisticated pyramids took off.
We've been taught that our present is the most advanced. But anecdotal reports indicate we are not. Various hence-lost techniques which allowed the ancients to do things we STILL can't get right, either by long-lost plants or special construction techniques, indicates that we have by far underestimated human intelligence of the past.
Basically what MM88 said. People from ancient civilizations were still people, and they still came up with clever things, many of which were lost in time. The current civilization understimates the previous ones.
For example, you say "they're just far too massive and too precise to have been done by hand with rocks and chisels.", they obviously used some carefully planned construction method, and many seemingly pointless things most likely aren't.
For example, I wouldn't say it's an "obsession with phi" so much as a necesity because whatever they were doing needed it for it to have the precission the final piece has.
These numbers aren't "encoded mysteriosly in a thing that's there", the thing is there to begin with because they used these numbers.
Think about the stuff we make: Aeons away, people will be equally puzzled as to how did we guess there was X invisible object of dark energy in an absurdly specific spot in the corner of the universe if we couldn't figure n-dimensional engineering. What did we use, blind speculation with math paired with some ancient machines?

This is funny as heck and I thank you for making this post.
History channel had a show called "Ancient Aliens" and while watching it; it kinda makes you think on how people made pyramids like these with little to no education like there is today.
I mean seriously how else could they have thought of shit like this? Fucking aliens

Honestly, the best part about ancient aliens, is how as the series goes on, that guy's hair becomes more and more crazy.
By the end he'll look like Dr. Wily.

The Earth's magnetic field flipping itself is not something that would destroy the atmosphere. It's actually quite a normal phenomena that carries no danger to it at all. Here's an article on Magnetic Reversals.
It really is fun to think about apocalypse scenarios from time to time, but really, there are far more interesting ways for us to get wiped out than a fake 'total frying via magnetic reversal'.
My favorite is the GRB. A Gamma-Ray Burst. Look it up, it's awesome.
