You guys helped me before with the A Link to the Past beta screenshots, can you help me again?

I need astute Zelda-loving individuals to provide commentary on differences between these early screenshots and the final games. Comparison screenshots also appreciated, if you have way too much time on your hands. Please list your commentary under "Pic 1", "Pic 2", etc. in the order they appear on the following drafts so I know exactly where it's supposed to go. The password for the drafts is "Fizz", since Fizzboing is the one who supplied the magazine scans to me.

Um...
The link's awakening one gives me a page not found error, but I'll comment on the oracle ones.

Pic 1.
The most obvious is that slingshot graphic. In the final game, there's no such graphic when using it.

I'd comment on the blue ropes, but I'm unsure on that. Also I don't quite recognize the dungeon either but I'll blame my bad memory.

Pic 3.
That type of dead tree never appears with the branches like that. Similar ones exist, but without the branches preciselly leaving the way open.
The marking in the wall never appears in the final game with a border in the upper ledge.
That area also got redesigned.

Pic 4.
I don't recall Moosh jumping like that.

Pic 6.
I'm sure there are no dungeon graphics like those. While there are walls you can burn, none of them look anything like that.

Pic 7.
This area got definitely redesigned. I don't recall the guy getting angry outside his house like that either.

Pic 9.
Holy shit giant cuckoo. Also the area around that house (what I pressume it is anyway) is different, or doesn't exist.
The dirt path graphics look different too.

Pic 10.
I haven't noticed before, but the shield is misplaced. I don't think those torches exist either.

Pic 12.
Whatever area is this, it got redesigned too.


I'm unsure of many of these though. I'll check later and try to come with actual comparisions.

Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I'll try to make actual comparisions with screenshots and stuff later.

As for Link's Awakening: (Though Xkeeper can probably give you the best imput on those)

The racoon is not in that room! In the final is in one with only north and south exits.

Pic 4
Definitely redesigned too, that chest is further to the north in the final.

Last pic
The bridge area is nothing like that. The background doesn't exist anymore.


For everything else I'd need again to make closer comparisions...

LA Inventory screen: Pretty sure you couldn't have 99 of anything (my mind fails me here), multiple potions (LA final only let you have one, I think), and... fire rod uses? Huh.

For the Oracle pictures...

Pic 1: Pretty sure blue ropes don't exist in the final. Those dungeon graphics also don't ring a bell.

Pic 2: Just an unchanged OoS Level 2 room.

Pic 3: ...No way this screen exists. Especially with Dimitri right there. Like mentioned, the dead tree graphic isn't normal.

Pic 4: Not sure. Moosh seems to be jumping oddly, as a noted.

Pic 5: The area is EXTREMELY rough when compared to the final map: http://www.zeldawiki.org/images/5/57/Veran_IG.png

Decorative grass and flower tiles were added, and the 'railing' on top of the cliffs was changed from red to blue. The upper cliff where Veran makes a time portal also has a different jumping off point. The entire map seems to have shifted a tile to the left.

Pic 6: Definitely a scrapped concept. None of those tiles appear anywhere in-game.

Pic 7: Changed a lot.

The house was removed, and a patch of land was added. The sign was moved to the land. The cliff also curves more to the left at the edge closest to Link.

Pic 8: No clue. I'm positive that this map doesn't exist.

Pic 9: Giant... Cuckoo... that looks like Talon. Nope, not in the final. That house isn't, either.

Pic 10: The torch design seems recycled from Link Awakening. The entire room most likely doesn't exist.

Pic 11: Just an unchanged OoA Level 2 room. Though, the enemies there are blue, while they are normally green.

Pic 12: This map doesn't exist, for sure. It quite honestly looks like a very, VERY bad attempt at a hack. Definitely missing some tile-laying basics here.

(Note to self: use cheats or something, not play through the entire game just because of something telling me a room I recognize is wrong.)


I'll be honest here: I thought I recognized this from dungeon 4 and I said Link didn't use the slingshot graphic, but I was wrong on both things.

That said, in the final the slingshot is blue. I'm certain the hyperslingshot is blue too, though that very clearly is not it.

I also was unsure of the blue Ropes (snakes), but indeed, all of them are green.

The room does look very familiar, but I give up on trying to find it. Closest is this from dungeon 3 which shares the graphics at least.



On the other hand, now THIS is more of a comparision. The upper path is narrower, the rolling thing graphics are different, and it's missing a pair of torches in the southern wall.


As mentioned already, the tree is never like that. While there are similar overworld areas, it could be pressumed it looked vastly different at a point, so that place doesn't exist anymore.
Another curiosity is the ledge. In the final version, vines grow along those markings in the wall in summer, and you can only jump down them in the other seasons-- none of them have a barrier like that on top of them.

Another thing of interest: Dimitri doesn't open the mouth normally when you aren't riding him, so this would've been a cutscene if anything.


Moosh jumps differently, as noted.


This one was pointed out already too. Sorry for the filter in this one!


Now, this one is pretty interesting. First and most obvious, the dungeon graphics look completely different from any in the game: They walls aren't just 16x16 tiles, the door is very different, and none of them have borders like that in the final game. Comapre:

Less obvious is that the square block is halfway aligned with the door, indicating that door occupied two tiles.
There is nothing in the final game like the thing at the right. There is again, a door you have to burn, but it looks nothing like that.
The torches are also different from the designs in either game.


Clearly redesigned. Sign is now standing on land, north path got blocked (and instead an underwater tunnel was added) and the house got relocated.
The guy never is angry outside his house like that.


I don't quite understand what's going on here, but it seems Link is just damaging an enemy with an Ember Seed. In the final game, an enemy hit by them is entirely set on fire-- not hurt by running into the fire as this seems to imply.
As for the area itself...

While this is an strech, the layout does match the screen exactly. There's no other place with small trees like that either.
In any case the overworld seems to have been heavily redesigned at a point.


As mentioned, in the final game there is no such giant chicken at all.

The house and area looks very much like this, but could've been anything anywhere really.


The sole place that comes to mind is Hero's Cave (hard), but I don't think something so simple would fit there, so I'll say this room doesn't exist. Also the torches are slightly different.
Oh, and there is another small oversight there...
Link is holding his shield with the wrong arm. :V
(and blue snakes, but we already talked about those!)


I still have nothing on this one. Again, looks like something in Hero's Cave or perhaps just a random cave.


Along the rest of the overworld, this place simply doesn't exist anymore, nor there is really any place it could've been, either.

That said, there is a house here when you meet Ricky, and it does have a pool inside for some reason, but that's just silly speculation.
Also, while it could've been discoloration, if you look closely Ricky's gloves are red (as they are supposed to be anyway), they are part of his sprite in the final.


Too bad these games are tile-based unlike Link's Awakening (or so I think), and don't have the old room designs underneath, it could've been pretty useful for context here!

It may just be me, but this makes it pretty obvious that the screenshot is a mockup. Some of the other ones look pretty similar to this one (being mockups, that is).

It's also worth noting that this screen is impossible because you never put destroyable tiles on the edges of the screen (you can break them, walk off, walk back, and you're stuck in a bush or whatever).




Moosh's jump is different, yes, but I'm also pretty sure he didn't have Ricky's tornado punch

... yes, I overlooked the part where they could be mockups. Silly me.

In fact, most of them seem to be so. The slingshot looks pasted over given the non-transparent pure white in it along the lenght the seed is at. Same with the other images with odd things going on.
And not only the water has that error, you can clearly see it is pasted over as it is misaligned. And those rocks look pretty odd.


Heck, I can't believe now the one with Link with the shield in the wrong arm didn't give it away. I feel dumb.

Thought I would put in my last 2 cents for this thread. I looked through most of the pictures on the Official Oracle NoJ Page (for OOS anyway) and there isn't really anything there in terms of stuff that went unused. There are a two oddities though. They aren't big but I'll mention them anyway.

If you look at this image, you can notice that the rod of seasons doesn't hold the power to change the seasons at all at a point in the game where you should be able to change the season to summer or winter. In that photo, the rod is on button A. Pic 5: This pic mentions that there were suppose to be three games coming out. Of course only two games came out. This page might give you more info on the third game:

Pic 6: The whole plot description differs from either Oracle game. Ganon(Ganondorf never appears in either game) only appears as the final boss when you link both OOS and OOA. Zelda is kidnapped by Twinrova in a linked game. It also mentions how Maple was suppose to be a friend like Ricky was. In the final game, she just used to obtain more items like this:

Doh. I realized something else that proves this one's a mockup too -- that exit at the top of the room isn't 16px aligned.

Actual doors (that don't have corner pieces like those ones above) are made of two squares (wall-empty, empty-wall, replace "empty" with the door if closed). A blank space with corners isn't, though.


It does match up with the comparison you posted, though. Interesting, but fake
