Drawing has been somewhat of a hobby of mine and it's something I don't want to let go as I move forward into medical school(MCAT in 13 days!).

So I've had the idea of creating a semi autobiographical pulp hero based on my aspirations and adventures I wish to have in my medical career. Last year I drew up his face. I just sat down one day had a few comic books open and took a few glances in the mirror. I don't have a tablet or any fancy tools. Just my college ruled notebook and some number 2 pencils.

I'm not going to pretend I'm some great artist and say this was easy. Because it was one of the hardest things to draw ever. Instead of just being a composite of different artists' styles I tried working towards my own style.

But in the end all it is is a 3/4 face. The next thing I tried drawing was a full body version but I got really caught up in the dimensions and shape to really progress. I need help with my steps and how to kind of preserve the base image I've created with making changes along the way. (i.e. hairstyle)

On top of all that I find myself wanting to experiment with doc savage style covers as well as Tetsuo Hara's manga creations. One being more stylized 1930s prewar Americana badass pulp adventure and the other being gruff badass action/sci-fi/martial arts romantic manga adventure. So in terms of art and style it's hard to say how I want to illustrate this world.

As for plot, here's a rough idea of the character:

one cover: a gruff, stern looking young man(in his 30s) with a cold stare in his eyes and a fire in his heart stands there in his torn and tattered white coat with an m-60 in one hand and a young child in another.

backstory: Dr. Khan was always someone who saw medicine as a powerful tool for mankind's salvation. Unity through life. He was always concerned with conflicts and diseases happening at the other side of the planet, unnoticed by many. After completing medical school he joined the Medecins Sans Fronteres, hoping to save the world eventually. However, while in DR Congo, he could not abide by the non-interventional protocol. He could not bear being unable to save his patients from a rain of bullets. He went rogue. And now he has resurfaced as DOKTOR KONGO. A physician determined to protect the lives of his patients-- even if it means ending someone else's.

Random Issue: DOKTOR KONGO MEETS THE SAVAGE APE-MEN!

So I know who he is. Somewhat of a caricature but also somewhat serious; grounded in a semi-accurate modern age. He is a badass but he's also human.

BUT BEFORE ALL THAT,

I really don't know where to go from the headshot.

Feel free to comment/critique.

Um...
Well, when you drew that, you were focused in drawing a headshot. In giving the character a face.

If you plan in drawing a full body, you can't just do the same. You need to plan the whole thing. Give the character some proportions first, perhaps poses and personality without having an image. From there on, try to start defining around that.

But you might want to further define the character's face? You don't want to lose what you want to portray with that sketch. Working on the whole head (front, side, back, looking around, expresions...) before the body might not be that bad of an idea...

I'm sorry this is some generic advice. I really am clueless on art in general.

Thanks! I'm thinking about getting a few books for visual reference as well to determine how I feel about American Pulp art styles from the 20th century.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
