Today at Dollar General, we had a couple come in with a return.

Their phone wouldn't activate properly, you see. They had bought a $10 Cricket Paygo phone, as well as a $35 card to fill it. This was intended as a Christmas gift.

When the woman tried to activate it, she had to read the serial number on the phone to the person on the other end. This number was read back, and they also checked again to confirm. This is important. They were then given a phone number.

Only problem is, someone named Dwight was already assigned that number.

So she called customer service to complain. They told her to return the phone to the store. I don't know what the fuck they expected us to do, but whatever. She brings it in.

Angel, the store manager, decides to call customer service herself. First person to answer said there was nothing he could do, and asked Angel to call back later. That went over about as well as you'd expect, so she eventually got through to the supervisor, who made the following claims. In order.

1. It's the woman's fault, she read the number wrong. Remember my important note above?

2. They can't change the number, nor can they credit her with the $35 in minutes she already bought.

3. Alright, maybe they can change the number on the phone she bought so she can actually use it, but she still can't get the minutes she bought, because they're on some other guy's account.

At this point everyone's sick of their shit. She gives up, tosses the phone in the trash because she doesn't want to do any more business with this company (can you blame her?), and decides to buy a different gift for her son.

Long story short, see title.

Now, to be clear here, I don't expect anyone here to have any advice or suggestions, because the matter's resolved. I just don't want anyone else here to have to put up with this shit.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Well, it's Cricket.

You definitely lose on some things for getting it for that cheap. Customer service and good, well-paid employees are the first to go. Also a competent system that would prevent such conflicts. But even more expensive services like Verizon aren't that great for customer service, either (Except FIOS customer service has been exceptional compared to their DSL customer service. They're separate groups as far as I know.).

This is why a pay-as-you-go service like Koodo Mobile is better than a cheap-arse one like Cricket.

Of course, Koodo doesn't exist in the US as far as I'm aware, but in any case, I'm talking about a pay-as-you-go phone service that doesn't have $10 phones!

Well, this is a bit upsetting. I was considering flashing an old Chocolate 3 and transferring to Cricket to save money on the monthly bill. For a single person, their deals blow Verizon clean out of the water. Though as paulguy addressed, their prices are probably only that low because of weak customer service like you described. :/

Most prepaid phone companies suck. I used to work at RadioShack, and I'm every familiar with several prepaid phone companies. Transferring minutes on Net10 is a freaking nightmare. I had a customer who was trying to do it for almost two weeks coming into our store and calling Net10 on our phone before he got credited.

And Boost mobile's automated phone menu is designed to convince you to use their website. God forbid you need to do something the website can't.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
