Most emulators don't run the RSP microcode, and that's the part that renders those special effects missing from the Gamecube and VC games. Some of them imitate the special effects regardless, but it's not as definite as a real N64.

Interesting, one of the reasons I still play Ocarina of Time in its original form and on its original system. Still looks pretty good on a RGB-modded unit. So does this mean that the version available on Virtual Console basically is identical to the Gamecube release with all these graphical effects gone?

Ok, thanks. After searching for a little info about it, it seems like the Virtual Console version is a little bit different than the GCN version afterall, besides having the original N64 colored button layout back at the top of the screen, the VC version seems to lack the short loading times the GCN version had and it also lost the rumble feature of previous versions. Anyway, I guess the only thing worthy of inclusion on the wiki is the revised N64 logo between v1.0 and v1.1 then...

I do (but if it's >32MB I'll have to hack some ROM loading routines). Of course I don't have this ROM...

Because the developer messages are basically a debug feed, the output will change depending on what you're doing, so this is a good example, if not everything that it's possible to see.

The way the red squares are placed at fixed intervals makes me think they're distance markers to measure how far out you can go in the water before you're reset with a heart missing. I can't understand the uploader's following comment, however. S/he says "I still, after 5 or so years, have absolutely no idea what the hell these things are, why they only appear on THIS map in both Ocarina of Time AND Majora's Mask, or if they even do anything," but there's obviously no Great Bay map in Ocarina of Time. Can someone explain?

I include even less as I am French. Hmmmm ... in Ocarina of Time? I do not know if the squares of the same kind. He does not speak of the room 124 in the debug rom?

I looked in Ocarina of Time, there is nothing at all except the squares of the room 124. Otherwise, I saw that there were also square in another part of the Great Bay. Here, it seems more obvious!

What I will show is not unknown for certain. This is a logo located in the bonus disc of Ocarina of Time/Master Quest. I speak of course of the logo with the "X".

However, this "X" is also present in three texts in Japanese. They are:












Each of the file names have an "l" or an "r". What would probably say left and right. The "X" corresponds to the right, then the Master Quest.

About a prototype of Ocarina of Time...

In 2007, I had seen on an interesting topic on the forum of ZSO site, since the page is no longer available, but I had kept the text on the forum of my site "Triforce Legend". In March, I had discussed this matter with GlitterBerri on MSN. If you're interested, here is the text in question:

In its September/October 2007 issue, the German "Wii-Magazin" has a small blurp about an early OoT preview cartridge in their "Nintendo Retro-Blog" section, where they're reprinting old blog-like entries from their time as 64Power, roughly 10 years ago - the mag re-branded itself/restarted several times in its lifetime, going from 64Power to big.N to N-Games to Wii-Magazin, or something like that, not sure but doesn't matter here.

Anyway, onto the blog blurp, dated Tuesday, August 5th, 1997, 6 PM (translated/interpreted as well as I could):

"Our colleague Richter can't be spoken to. His assignments aren't being worked on. The reason: While on his holidays, he missed the preview version of The Legend of Zelda 64, which is being kept secure in our office safe, so much. Oh sooo much! Now, he's finally got it back and is playing through it. Two times. At least. With headphones and completely shut away from the outside world. But who's gonna do his work now?"

...now, OoT being a Nintendo game, this prototype surely went back to them after those guys were finished with it. Would be the Holy Grail for us if not, but, well... you know. Besides, it's been 10 years since then... Still, I think I'm going to write a letter to them, asking about what happened to this cart as well as what happens to those, no matter if cart or disk, in general.

I remember reading that, writing that post, but I never actually wrote them a letter or somesuch. And by this point - five years after they reprinted the blurb, and almost exactly 15 years after it happened - I wouldn't want to write them about this anymore...

...and in fact, they don't appear to exist anymore. Seems like the publishing house decided to discontinue the magazine in late 2011, owing to the Wii being in its final days, and wanted to restart the mag as "Wii U-Magazin" later this year... if the publishing house weren't bought out by someone else in April. So, even if I wanted to write them now, I wouldn't know where I'd need to write to, or if the people originally responsible for 64Power and/or Wii-Magazin are still with the company.
