Could it go to 255 (or whatever the data type max was) with rare candies with any gains? I believe red/blue clamped to 99 or 100, but I didn't have rare candies at the time. I haven't played a pokemon game to that extent since.

I know you could glitch it to 255, but I almost never did, since level 255 pokemon had no use for me.

Pokemon are capped to level 100 no matter what. If you glitch to get higher level Pokemon, however, you can feed them Rare Candies all the way up to level 255. They drop down back to 100 if you use them in a normal battle, but you can use them in link battles just fine.

100 and higher tend to only appear while doing the Cinnabar/Seafoam glitch. Of course, I remember getting a level 100 Nidoqueen very, very early with the Mew glitch too... but I can't exactly remember how.

I'll have to play with it a bit more.

It's a glitch that can be done at pretty much viridian forest (I think?) that basically gives you a level 1 pokémon (as with the Mew Glitch) with a lot of experience, making it jump straight to level 100. Though I don't know how exactly does it work
