Those of you who paid attention (like me) may have noticed that, for the past while, we only had one guest on at any given time.


Turns out that the auto_increment field for that row reached 16777216. It's also a MEDIUMINT, so it ran out of space. A new guest would only be added when the old one was deleted (after 5 minutes).


Needless to say this issue is fixed and we hopefully shouldn't have that particular issue again. (Oddly, this is the only instance of MEDIUMINT being used that I can recall.)

It's just a unique identifier for each guest, though it isn't tracked or updated. (Basically it's just a primary key for the sake of having a primary key.)

What exactly was just counting up here? I can't imagine why the functionality for counting the total number of unique visitors to ever visit would be tied to counting the number of guests currently visiting in any way that would cause this. Just... How.

It never happened on the board's first incarnation? I'm kinda surprised...

This reminds me of when view counts were stuck at 65535 for some certain huge threads. Ah well, I guess you have to bump into some weird issues to fix them sometimes...

If it had happened before, more than likely the table was just emptied out since it isn't vital and starts to repopulate anyway.

It's hard to say if it would've been hit in prior boards, but Acmlm can definitely take a look at the old backup and see where it's at.

Otherwise, do remember that we've been here for about 3 years, now (the old board survived 4), and we're in an age where internet bots are a lot more common than they were back then.

Not quite; the table didn't have 16.7 million rows, it's that the stored AUTO_INCREMENT value for the primary key hit the numeric limit of MEDIUMINT.

To further clarify, here's how it works:


- Guests views page
- All entries with that connection's IP address are deleted
- All entries older than 5 minutes are deleted
- The guest's view is logged into the guest table and eats a auto-increment ID


The auto-incrementing ID counter would go up each time (it doesn't get reused or roll over on its own), so after 3+ years of abuse it finally pinned itself at the maximum value.



To give you an idea of the volume of bots, there are about 29 guests from varying IPs in the table right now, though it's impossible to say how many times they've loaded pages between them.

It took up 3 bytes, same amount as when it's empty.

Someone should probably explain how auto_increment works, because there seems to be a lot of misconceptions in this thread. I'd do it, but I'm bad at explaining things.

The misconception here is that the ID was incrementing regardless of the fact that the previous entries were all deleted; by the time I fixed this bug there was only a single row in the table taking up about 1 K of space (most of it overhead from deletions).

At least we're back up to our healthy dose of 30+ bots now.

I don't know why I was thinking of auto_increment as a rows of data. I remember VBulletin had a table that made a record for every new word that was posted.

Now that I think about it, I did notice this - when I was checking user agents on another browser, I noticed I was the only guest.

I just chalked it up to thinking I was the only guest on the board at the time, though.
