Let's moving TCRF?


TCRF SERVER STATS

(note that until further notice these are still on tocici and therefore are subject to excruciatingly long downtimes)

RAM. We use about 2 GB constantly thanks to a lot of tweaking on my part and also Apache doing what it does.


Bandwidth. 100-200 GB is the average, but it's spiked much higher (remember the Zelda prototype thing?).

Disk usage! (Ooh, fancy chart.) We use about 6-7 GB, but always growing. TCRF eats about 3 GB by itself, the rest is mostly other Fun Stuph.


MEET YOUR CONTENDERS

TOCICI

We use them now.

I really shouldn't have to say more.

$23/month.
4 GB RAM (2GB dedicated).
1 TB bandwidth/month.
10 GB storage space.

LINODE

Basically, Linux VPSes. Good reviews, recommended by some people.
The closest thing to what we have is the "Linode 1024" plan.
$40/month.
1 GB RAM.
400 GB bandwidth/month.
40 GB disk space.

Basically, double what we're paying now for some improvements and movement backwards.

Basically the same as Linode, except it's Rackspace.
$44/month $61.80/month (with bandwidth).
1 GB RAM.
... bandwidth. Oh boy. 18¢ / GB. Do the math.
40 GB storage space.

At first I thought the price was decent, then I saw that bandwidth was a pay-as-you-go thing too. Yeah, fuck that noise. Don't vote for Rackspace.

SONIC RETRO

ScarredSun and I are bros. Lesbros? I'm not sure how that works, since we're really neither, but whatever. Basically we'd hitch a ride on the SR server because, well, why the hell not.

$whatever/month. Probably $30 if I had to guess, I think it's still $60/m.
Fuck all for memory and bandwidth numbers, but it runs Mediawiki pretty well over there.

Ordinarily I would have no issues going with this one, but, well... The last few instances of "sharing a server" really haven't gone that well. It's not that I don't think SS is a great person, it's just that I do like my freedom to fuck things up and only answering to myself. Your milage may vary, since it's probably the best choice out of all of these.

I'd say Sonic Retro. Tocici is proving itself to be a lousy host, and the other 2 alternatives don't look very good either. Paying per gigabyte would make the price unpredictable and could add up to a lot given how popular TCRF is/will be.

Not at the moment, sorry. It's probably buried somewhere in vnstat but fuck all if I know (or care to find) the commands to get it, much less actually doing any sort of ssh session.

This is why I picked Linode. Retro wouldn't be that bad, but... I dunno, I kind of worry sometimes.

Hmmmm....

I used to work at a website development place that did hosting and stuff called Sephone. I haven't been keeping up with them now, but a recent search looks like they're doing more things focused on business and building websites for others, kind of like "Hey, we'll do it for you and let you use these easy things so you don't derp in making a website!" or some such. It's very business-focused.

I can try giving them a call and see if they offer something like what we need, but I kinda need to know about exactly what kind of thing we're looking for and see if it would fit in with what they do. I can't guarantee anything other than the fact I can talk to the head honcho directly about that, but if it's an option you wanna pursue, I can try it.

They're cool folks there. I'd enjoy the chance to talk with 'em again. =)

That seems to be the consumer-facing focus most hosts usually have. You'll probably have to dig deeper in to their plans and packages to find anything useful.

EDIT: As far as my opinion on things go, I have no idea. The other plans while they may have better uptime don't seem fantastic. 1GB RAM looks like it might choke things during high-traffic times. Then they cost significantly more. I don't know anything about Sonic Retro or their hosting so I can't really comment on that. If they have good uptime and their statistics combined with yours still fit in their limitations, then I'd say go for it. Would it be possible for us to get their statistics so we can get a clearer picture on what moving to sonic retro would mean for TCRF?

Retro might be the better option... but we all know the problems this sort of thing has. I mean, sure it won't cause drama nor anything of that sort, but "not being able to fuck things up" is problematic.

Linode... doesn't sound well. 1GB would mean we'd be forcing the server like hell at least, and that's not good.

Anyways taking a look at Sephone would be a good idea. Though I wouldn't hold high hopes, you know.

If it wouldn't mean my web host would shut down Cordilon and all my other stuff for it, I'd let you throw TCRF on Cordilon's hosting account at HostGator. Then again, we don't have a VPS, but we do have a semi-active (still peanuts compared to Jul) forum and pmwiki going smoothly on it.

So yeah. Sonic Retro is our best bet.

For context:

Retro has 7GB; we use about 2 on average as well, and it's not like the load would auto-double. We have a quad-core processor. It's a pretty solid server and hasn't had any real issues since we worked out some problems with SVN.

The only thing that will probably even be an issue is bandwidth, but that's not a huuuuge issue: it's something I need to sort out as it is.

Another option may be to move over to Sonic Retro for the time being and maybe consider purchasing a server for ourselves in the same data center for colo purposes.

Because we get enough hits/day that we outgrew simple shared hosting.



That's an average of 3 to 6 page loads per second. Peak times can go higher (sometime in October it was over 15/sec).

A dedicated server tends to run you upwards of $250/month for the big packages. If we could pick up a 2007-era desktop computer and purchase a net connection with a 20 mbps upstream and no bandwidth cap, we could probably get away with that... but then someone has to pay for a net connection and run a server in his or her house.

A server would cost about $600 up-front (perhaps a bit less if we went with less-capable hardware), and would be shoved into a cabinet there for about $50/month thereafter.

I think buying your own server and doing that would be the best option, given the potential for activity to continue growing. In the meantime co-hosting on Retro doesn't sound bad either.

Of course as I don't use TCRF this is noted solely in my capacity as computer scientist, not as a member of TCRF.

Hmm. You know, that doesn't sound like a very bad idea either. The initial cost certainly is a bit of a stumbling block, though... (And after looking at some of the falls back on Linode... the bandwidth might be enough, I don't know, but the RAM there worries me.)

Is the $600 server similar hardware to what's being used on Tocici right now?
