A woman on deviantArt who was travelling from Holland to England for the Zelda 25th anniversary symphony ended up being arrested when their train made a stop in Belgium.

Due to her being an American who married into her Dutch citizenship, she was not issued any identifying number in her papers (although every agency they visited said they were okay.) When they were shown to authorities in Belgium though, that little detail was ignored and she was declared an illegal alien. All of her belongings were confiscated and she was barely allowed to contact her husband. At first she was confined to a solitary holding cell, and then for the last month or so had to share a cell with other inmates. While authorities treated her like a criminal, the prison guards were far more sympthetic. Some even quit their job when they learned what happened. Others told her they felt ashamed to be Belgian themselves.

She's back in the US now, having chosen deportation over waiting in a cell possibly forever to be extradited back to Holland (what with the poor bureaucracy that got her incarcerated in the first place). She never did see the symphony, and she's seperated from her husband. She hasn't taken this to the press as there are still many things about it she'd rather not discuss (hence the lack of coverage, also why I did not put this in Action McNews.) However, I would like to share with you her latest journal entry.

Dear God, that's seriously fucking terrible.

I really hope that they like, issue some sort of apology or she can get some damn justice out of all of that. That's freaking terrible. Seriously.

So what? Maybe he wasn't interested, or had to work, or something.

The original story is ridiculous, though. Looks like the Netherlands should start to include identification numbers in the papers of foreigners who acquire Dutch citizenship. Although I wonder if the Belgian authorities were just looking for an excuse to lock someone up.

I still think it's even more ridiculous on a train just passing through the country. They couldn't check her ticket to make sure she was getting off in England? Then, if she decided to do something sneaky by getting off in Belgium (not that she would), they'd check that the ticket was for England and then ask about her papers.

He made the first journal post letting everyone know what happened to her. It's a few entries before the one posted. If anything, it was not his decision to be seperated from her.

Due to PTSD brought on by the ordeal, she can't travel far from her current location. She's told me though that it is something she'll return to doing, in time.
