It seems we're pulling in more info other than streams from this game so here's a thread for it. I'd love to help with the research atm, but all I can muster is speculation due to papers and life and papers and tests and life and etc.

Anyway, the info so far:

Streams: Several copies/alterations of songs and some may very well be leftovers from the various incarnations this game has gone through.

Textures: Holy hell I had no idea we'd been able to view those yet. Figured they were packed with a compression we hadn't dealt with yet.

Say the file types please. I have many programs here.
I can't rip or get because I don't own it yet, so...

Just say the filetypes, I may help you

I noticed that this game includes a gigantic mapping file (iuk.MAP) for debugging purposes. This might help map the memory regions with symbols so hacking can be made easier. I know Dolphin can take advantage of these when run in debug mode, but I'm not sure if it's helpful.

Speaking of debugs, I wanted to look at the game's executable for one but I couldn't extract it from the disc. I should dump the memory later and take a look at it that way in search of some debugger strings. In HAL's previous games, they always seem to leave a debug of some kind in their games (except for Brawl but that wasn't exactly developed entirely by HAL). So I'm curious if they left something in here for this game.

MAP files have in most of Nintendo games.
You can extract stuff with Dolphin

A bit off-topic, but I've seen "iuk" pop up a lot in the game's stream names. Maybe it's a codename?

Melee had a pretty extensive debug mode, so I'd be kinda surprised if Brawl didn't. (I used to joke that following the trend of adding more debug features each time, Brawl would just include the source code on the disc. )

iuk probably stands for something, but I can't guess what.

This guy found some unused stuff over here.
The title of the post is "Kirby of the Stars Wii Discarded Super Powers"

There's some interesting stuff this guy has. However, it's in Japanese. When I do translate that blog post, I'll just edit this forum post.

TRANSLATION (Not complete yet):
Now, here are some pictures. It seems like the Spark and Cutter super powers were planned to appear (in this game).

Originally, there weren't just going to be five types of super powers (Sword, Beam, Fire, Ice, and Hammer). Remains of two additional super powers have been discovered.

SPARK
The first power-up is (Super) Spark. Only this star texture for the Copy Power was found. Unfortunately, the data for the corresponding hat was removed and it was overwritten with icons for the ultra-sword.

CUTTER
The second power-up is (Super) Cutter. Here, there is additional data, aside from this star texture. I think it was almost finished.

First, this unused icon was found.

An image of Kirby wearing the hat

Next, a 3D model of the (Super) Cutter, along with some animations for Kirby, were found.

(Super) Cutter

As seen from up-front

As seen from the side

(Here, the blogger says that while Kirby does have animation data, he does not have an animation for putting the hat on.)

As a bonus, here is the default power star texture.

Normal Ability

Super Power

The clock's marks are engraved.

I need to ask, how are you guys viewing the models? I know its brres format, but isn't there some sort of compression on the files?

EDIT: It looks like the models are MDL0, at least from what I can tell from the distorted headers in hex workshop. As for the compression... I dunno. I feel like its huff8... Not entirely sure though.

Use the Revolution SDK's "NTCompress.exe" to decompress the files, like follows:

ntcompress.exe -x Base.brres.cmp

Then just change the extension to "BRRES", and open 'em up in either BrawlBox v0.65, or BRRESViewer (the latter's a bit easier to use).

Was just about to run them through the compression gauntlet. Thanks dude.

Edit:

Hey, are you sure about ntcompress? I have the wii sdk and I am not seeing this option for "-x" in ntcompress.exe.

You should probably get it from the newer, v3.2 SDK that LaKiTu released. It also works with files that couldn't be decompressed normally, like the ones from TMNT: Smash-Up and Mario Sports Mix.

I would post the file itself, but I'm not sure about the legality of doing so.

No no, it's cool. I have my ways.

EDIT:

And she's working. Very good. Now we may commence with le documentation.

Unused Super-Cutter Hat (Now Larger )* My bad. RandomTBrush covered the transparency back in the weird discoveries thread:

EDIT 2:

Holy shit. They really left a lot of stuff in here didn't they... I just happened upon some leftover textures of various levels from the GC iteration...

\g3d\step\map\

gckbeach, gckcanyon, gckcanyon2, gckcloud, gckcloud2, gcksnowmt

All of these names match the brstms we found with the GCK labels so I really think we're on to something here.

This seems to be everything left of the debug features.

As you can see in the iuk.map most of the debug stuff is not compiled into it.

Jeez, it's like they left an entire undeveloped section of the game. I wonder why they did that? It makes absolutely no sense. Maybe for reference?

Or maybe they just re-used their backgrounds that they made for their early revisions instead of letting them go to waste?

Did you already played the game for know? Sometimes companies keep file names really odd, which looks unused.

Awesome stuff there Crediar. I figured someone would be able to put iuk.map to use. Haven't given it a look myself.

Actually, I have not. But I am almost certain these are not used. The quality of the textures and the naming of GCK are screaming "I am leftover gamecube, bitch!" Of course we're going to have to verify this, but at least we've got an area to look into now don't we.

Also, I don't have a SSBB extraction on me atm. Anyone know if the Kirby and Dedede models/textures are reused at all? They seem quite similar.

Kirby and DeDeDe's models are very different than the Brawl ones. However, I know that the Wing hat is the same one used for the Brawl trophy, and that Fighter, Ice, Needle and Sleep's hats are retextures.

So I managed to get my immediate work out of the way for college and hit KRD hard this week. Just finished the main game and it seems HAL is mocking us in the credits with what is clearly a test room screenshot displayed as part of the sequence. It looks pretty much like this, with there being some copy ability slots to choose from as well. Of course, we can't check map files as of yet so there's no way to confirm if its even in the game or not.

After playing through some of the levels I did notice similar textures to those within the GCK folders, but I want to run those levels through dolphin just to be sure any GCK files are loaded.

As for the streams, there is a noticeable difference between those used in game and the ones which we believe to have been composed with DS instruments. I'll probably have to run the soundtest through dolphin as well just to check that too. There were also a few streams that, to my memory, never appeared in game. Cactus1 I think is one of those.

I haven't played through the second quest yet so I'm not entirely certain what surprises may lay ahead there, but I'm fairly certain we're on to some big finds here.

EDIT:

Just ran through the sound test and many songs that I assume are unused are available for play there, including Cactus1. I double checked the desert level and there is no sign of it at all. I am all but certain it is not featured anywhere else in the game unless it appears within the challenges or as alternate music in hard mode, I'm just going to have to flat out call it unused. I'm becoming a bit tired of playing through each level just to check for stuff so I think I'm going to see if I can figure out how to install a 100% save off of gfaqs or something...

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
