Yeah, I'm with paulguy on this one. Smalltalk is smalltalk. It's just ritual and it sometimes it involves using names. If I'm going to address someone, I at least try to gauge how cool they are beforehand. A guy who doesn't smile at you and obviously can't wait to go back to reading a newspaper probably wouldn't find this "intimacy" amusing.

| Yeah, small talk is just that. Some people are just friendly and they try to use people's names, I don't really see it being that out of line. I don't do it myself, personally, but I know people who do and that's just part of their personality--especially in instances when you're at say, a restaurant and the waiter outright introduces themselves by name at the start of the service. |

As someone who has had nearly 6 years of experience in the customer service industry, the majority of which was as a tour guide, I can say that I am not bothered by it much. Granted at the places where I worked we could have our last names on our badges i.e. Mr. Smith instead of our first names. Either way people were nice about it. I have never had a problem with angry customers because I have always had a way with people (especially when talking about history). I actually got an award from the former Secretary of Veteran Affairs, Edward Shinseki, for taking his group on my special tour of Mount Vernon. It is a very nice resume builder  |

| I wear a nametag were I work as well. It's optional most of the time so I can choose not to wear if it I like. I actually like when people read my name off the tag. It means they are willing to call me by my name rather than in 3rd person. However at this point most of the people I work with are other staff members who know my name by now. Online I don't know of anyone who calls me by my real name. Even people I know IRL use "Emuz" My real name isn't a secret anymore so I don't even bother hiding it. :/ |
