Taking the discussion from here, because you cannot discuss stuff on a wiki.

BMF now seemingly considers easter eggs inclusible. Why? Most of them are really uninteresting, and there are a thousand websites out there for easter eggs, so I don't see a reason to include them.

Well it depends on your definition of "easter egg", I think...

I mean, like, as I said on IRC, the CT Developer's Ending I wouldn't put on the wiki, but something like the Ultima V page I think is alright?

If you think this is at all a sudden decision, I would like you to go look up TCRF's history; Magic John/Totally Rad being an excellent example. The credits are not specifically hidden or unused in either version, as they're just a simple button code.


My personal opinion on the subject is that the more obscure or unknown an egg is, the more includable it is. Obviously things like CT's deveoper ending isn't very hidden (or arguably an easter egg at all), but some more obscure things like passwords that subtly change things or add bizarre elements later on are.

The simple reason is that a lot of debug features could easily be classified as easter eggs; push a button code, recieve something hidden. Doubly so if the menu was obviously intended to be player-accessed at some point, and not just developer-only.


tl;dr: I agree with BMF, though this decision is neither new nor surprising, having originated in the early 2000s.

Hey, now. That tone isn't necessary. Ratchet back the passive-aggression a few clicks -- I've never had reason to moderate this forum, and I don't want to be given one, you know?

Anyway: Having ported almost every single page from the old CRF, more than a few old articles contain hidden Easter Eggs that would never have seen the light of day, had BMF not actually posted them up. Like Magic John, as Xk pointed out. Just because it's an "easter egg" does not mean it's a commonplace thing, nor does it mean it's outside of our dominion of "unusual things." I don't see a single problem with an easter eggs icon on the BOB.

To turn thread thread useful (for a few reasons not discussed here), I have personally been considering moving to a format like this for the bob indicators:

This game features:
[] Unused Music
[] Unused Modes
[] Hidden Scenes

etc.

That way, the icons would still be represenative, but would have a bit more meaning and explanative purpose than just... being there.

I'd say that Easter eggs would be fine on TCRF. They fall into the same category of "things normal game-players won't see" that unused stuff falls into. Sure, everyone* knows about the Konami code or the dot in Adventure, but some Easter eggs are so obscure that almost nobody is even aware of them.

*by "everyone" I mean "a certain subset of gaming geeks"

Some of the easter eggs, like the example given, are just as well hidden as (if not more hidden than) debug menus, and the chances of you finding them out on your own are very slim. That kind of easter egg definitely fits in with the site. The kinds of easter eggs that wouldn't really belong are ones that can either be found by most everyone pretty easily (little toy train in a nook in Toy Time Galaxy) or are even hinted/pointed at by the game itself (Yoshi's Island's 2-Player minigame menu). The important thing is not that they are easter eggs, but what you have to do to find them.


And yes, a more descriptive listing like that would be great. I find myself having to check what most of the icons mean. Some are obviousish, but others are rather abstract.

Since that's in, I'll probably bust out my old Atari emulator and see if I can get a screenshot of that Adventure easter egg thing, since I'm pretty certain we don't already have it yet.

Easter Eggs are probably a good idea, since some of the stuff is clearly both for debug and player access (for instance, the supposed "debug" functions of Wario Land were pointed out in an issue of Nintendo Power over a decade ago ) so I really don't see an issue...
